1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

Hello. I’m Yeonhee Shin. I live in Korea. I spend most of the day with my children, drawing in my spare time.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I want to draw comfortable paintings that warms the heart. I want to make time for you to relax while looking at the paintings.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I love all the tools, especially the matte gouache and the rough colored pencils. But I also really like the thick feel of oil pastels. It seems that the accidental feelings felt by hand cannot be expressed digitally yet.

4. What is your artistic process like?

When inspired, I sketch in pencil in my notebook. Based on this, draw with paint on iPad, Photoshop, or paper. If I have time, I want to draw a lot of gouache painting

5. Who and/or what inspires your work? 

I like to watch the evening sky at sunset, or the night air. When I listen to my favorite music at that time, I feel happiness beyond words. The purpose of my paintings is to express the emotions I feel at this time through paintings.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Painting plays a big role in my life. Every day, even a little bit, I express myself through pictures. You can find a person who is forgotten because of childcare. When I see pretty colors, when I see pretty pictures, I feel happy and comfortable. I want to share this feeling with many people.

7. Where did you study?

I don't major in art, so I first learned painting through an illustration class. I didn't know where to start, so I searched a lot and studied a lot. My health deteriorated after drawing all night because I wanted to draw well. So these days, I spend a lot less time drawing and focusing on exercise and sleep.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to make a picture book as happy as I started painting because I wanted to make a picture book. And I think I'm working as an illustrator.

9. What about in ten?

At that time, when the children grow up, I think I will be able to focus more on my drawings. I am so happy just thinking about it. I want to travel and see and feel many things. Those experiences will enrich my paintings.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

My paintings make me happy, and I also want people to be comforted by my paintings.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like them all. I especially like the cold noodles.

12. Favourite book?

I like mystery comics. Especially "Detective Conan".

13. Favourite genre of music? 

I usually listen to the Ghibli OST when I draw. I love that you can feel all the seasons in the Ghibli ost.

14. What are your hobbies? 

I'm into bikes these days. It is really exciting to ride through the night wind while looking at the sparkling city.

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

I love makeup so much that I worked for a long time at a cosmetics company. If it wasn't for childcare, I think I would have continued to work at a cosmetics company.
