1. What's your story? Where are you from?

I am Bea Crespo, a Spanish illustrator based in Barcelona. Since 5 years ago, i work as a full time freelance illustrator, what I really love. Soy Bea Crespo, una ilustradora afincada en Barcelona. Desde hace cinco años me dedico a tiempo completo a la ilustración, lo que me hace muy feliz.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like creating drawings with various meanings, representing things that surely exist, although we may not be able to see them. I think my style is simple and direct, but with different readings. Me gusta crear imágenes con varios significados, representar cosas que seguramente existan, aunque no podamos verlas. Creo que mi estilo es sencillo y directo, pero con diferentes lecturas.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

My favorite medium (right now) is silk screen printing. I love the results you can get, all the process from the creation of the illustration to the final print and the magic that happens when you mix colors, textures and transparencies, it´s a really funny process. However, I usually use the computer for my works, as the timings use to be too short for silk screen, which becomes my fresh air window. Si tuviera que elegir ahora mismo, sería la serigrafía. Me encantan los resultados que da, y todo el proceso, desde que empiezo a crear la ilustración hasta que la imprimo. Hay cierta magia cuando se mezclan colores, texturas y transparencias, es un proceso muy divertido. De todos modos, normalmente uso el ordenador para mis encargos, ya que suele haber muy poco tiempo, así que la serigrafía es mi ventana de aire fresco.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I always start with pencil sketches, thinking on the idea, more than in the composition or aesthetic. I write a lot of words and make small and fast drawings, like a workout. In this way, I understand the concept. When I decide what idea is the good one, I jump to the computer and look for colors, and composition. Siempre comienzo el proceso con bocetos a lápiz, pensando más en la idea que en la composición o la estética. Escribo muchas palabras y hago dibujos rápidos y pequeños, como un entrenamiento para entender el concepto. Una vez decido cual es la mejor idea para representar lo que quiero, paso al ordenador y trabajo el color.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I try to be alert, as anything can inspire you: cooking, a walk, a conversation with friends, a museum…But the real way to find inspiration is, from my point of view, work a lot. Intento estar alerta, ya que cualquier cosa puede inspirarte; cocinar, un paseo, una conversación con amigos, un museo…Pero creo que la verdadera forma de encontrar la inspiración, es trabajar mucho.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I think that when your work consists on creating new images, concepts and ideas, whatever way you use for it, you must be open to listen, see and learn new things all the time. Something like being a sponge towards the world. And for me, this also makes life much more interesting. Creo que cualquier trabajo que consista en crear nuevas imágenes, ideas o conceptos requiere que se esté abierto a escuchar y aprender todo el tiempo, algo así como ser una esponja. Y además, para mi esto hace la vida mucho más interesante.

7. Where did you study?

I studied Fine Arts in Madrid. Estudié Bellas Artes en Madrid.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

I like to be a freelance, even with the uncertainty it takes some times, so in five years I would love to continue working in challenging new projects with interesting people involved (some times to be an illustrator can be too lonely). Me gusta el trabajo freelance, aun con la incertidumbre que ello conlleva a veces, así que en cinco años me gustaría seguir trabajando en nuevos e interesantes proyectos donde pueda colaborar con gente interesante (a veces ser ilustrador puede ser muy solitario)

9. What about in ten?

The same, I hope! (but wiser!) Espero que lo mismo, ¡pero más sabia!

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I would like that people who see what I do feel moved, in some way, by my work. Make them asking themselves things and look for new meanings is what I would love to cause. Me gustaría que la gente que ve mi trabajo se sintiera conmovida en cierta manera. Hacer que se pregunten cosas y que busquen nuevos significados.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

This is a really difficult question….To say something (sorry to the rest of food I am not going to name, I really appreciate you too), lately I am loving to cook dumplings, rice noodles soup and anything that includes salmon or avocado. Always with a glass of wine. Esta es una pregunta muy difícil…Por decir algo (y pido perdón a todas las comidas que no voy a nombrar y me encantan), últimamente me está gustando mucho cocinar dumplings, sopas con fideos de arroz y cualquier cosa que incluya aguacate y salmón. Siempre con una copa de vino, claro.

12. Favourite book?

Another very difficult question…. anything written by Gabriel García Márquez. Otra pregunta difícil…Diré que cualquiera escrito por Gabriel García Márquez

13. Favourite genre of music?

This is getting to hard…rock, punk rock, folk… Esto cada vez se pone más difícil…rock, punk rock, folk…

14. What are your hobbies?

Besides cooking, reading and music…I am learning ceramics, I love going to the nature, watching series, travelling and being with friends. Aparte de cocinar, leer y escuchar música…Estoy yendo a clases de cerámica, me encanta salir a la naturaleza, ver series, viajar y estar con amigos.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

A rock star, for sure :) Una estrella de rock, claramente :)
