1. What's your story? Where are you from?

My name is Vincent Chen and I was born and raised in central New Jersey. I am currently located in Providence, Rhode Island attending school.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My aesthetic can be described as simple and colorful. I really love playing with color, shapes, and flatness. I try to achieve a sense of space and atmosphere through the usage of flat shapes.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Digital is my go-to medium. I just really enjoy how flexible it is and how fast I can work with it.

4. What is your artistic process like?

My artistic process usually involves a really loose sketch. I keep sketching different compositions until I find one I enjoy. Then I paint the shapes based on my loose sketch, lock the layer, and paint on top of them.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Pretty much anything can inspire me! Nature plays a pretty big inspiration to my work right now. I really admire the works of plein air painters and background painters for animation like pixelp, Tonko House, Kazuo Oga, and Elle Michalka.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art for me is a way for me to communicate to others. Sometimes I create pieces to help me process thoughts I can’t really understand or put into words.

7. Where did you study?

I am currently a senior at the Rhode Island School of Design majoring in illustration!

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Hopefully working as an in-house studio artist or a freelance illustrator.

9. What about in ten?

I would really love to one day become an art school professor so maybe I’ll be back in school getting another degree.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to make work that makes people feel good or work that people can relate to! I think sometimes it’s nice to focus on smaller moments.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I am an extremely picky person but noodles never let me down!!! I like them super soft. Al dente doesn't cut it.

12. Favourite book?

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It holds a very special place in my heart.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I don’t really know how to describe my music taste… These days I usually just listen to soundtracks from games and movies. Games like Persona 5, Journey, and cave story have some really awesome tracks!

14. What are your hobbies?

I love watching movies, binge watching tv shows/anime, gaming, and fooling around with friends.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Truthfully, I have no clue!
