1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi! My name is Jung-Hyun CHOI. Professional Illustrator with nickname 'CJroblue' aged  17 years from South Korea. 안녕하세요 저는 올해 17년째 cjroblue 라는 이름으로 활동하고있는 일러스트레이터 최정현 입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Try to express ordinary life. Emotions such as happiness, sadness and love. These emotions are very normal but also are very important in our life. You can find cloud or wind patterns in my works these are expressions of time's movement, the weight of air, colors of that time. 저는 제가 겪는 일상속에서 겪는 행복,우울,슬픔,사랑등의 소소하지만 가장 중요시되는 감정의 변화를 그려내려 노력하고 있어요. 지극히 평범하고 일상적인 인물과 배경사이에 비현실적인 바람의 흐름을 넣어 시간의 흐름과 분위기, 공기의 무게등을 표현하고 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

My work is all based on hand drawing. Coloring in Photoshop after pen lining but this doesn't mean that Photoshop is my favourite. I think a tool is just a tool but reason why I usually use Photoshop is comfortable for works with clients, haha. I also love pen drawing and watercolor as well. 작업은 핸드드로잉을 기반으로 포토샵에서 채색을 하지만 특별히 좋아하는 툴이 있는것은 아닙니다. 상황에따라 수작업으로 모든 그림을 완성하기도 하며 툴은 생각을 옮기는 도구일 뿐이라고 생각하고 있습니다. 하지만 자주쓰는 포토샵이라는 툴 자체에 애정이 있는것도 사실입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Look carefully when I walk or go somewhere and try to remember the smell of air, colors, sounds like that. Before I drew something I mixed those emotions and experiences. 그림뿐 아니라 책을쓰거나 음악을 만드는 사람들도 비슷하겠지만, 일상에서 보고 듣고 느끼는 모든것들을 잘 기억해놓는 편입니다. 그러다 문득 그 쌓아놓은 이미지들이 머리속에서 합쳐지며 분위기가 잡히는 순간에 그 이미지를 러프하게 옮깁니다. 스케치가 완성된 후 라이닝 작업을 거쳐 컬러링까지 완성되는것은 짧으면 하루만에 끝나는 날도 많습니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

All my experiences and music. 특정한 어떤 사람이라기 보다 매일매일 눈을뜨는 순간부터 체험하는 모든것들에서 영향을 받습니다. 그중 영향력이 큰것을 꼽으라면 음악과 제가 지금까지 살아온 경험들 입니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

This answer I reference another interview I did. "When it comes to his work, there is one driving force behind it all. “My big motivation is poverty. This experience, it mean’s for example, I try to fix debt or something like that. When I get many different emotions like have disappointment or anger, also hope at the same time, I try to explain on the canvas how to hold out and be consoled.” These emotions play various parts in his work and each of them are represented in several different ways. “Like cloud or smoke shape in every my artworks it means flowed away every moment. Also every material from daily life. Coffee, smoke, girlfriend, roadbike…things like that because these make me feel comfort. These represent every emotion like an escape form real life and also a little happiness in everyday life. Although the journey has been a long one, it is far from over. CJ has been working many years towards his ideal career path and now plans to take it to another part of the world. “Now, my early future plan is go to New Zealand next year with my girlfriend. I think every artist has to live before success. Korea is also the worst country for poor artist. I will try to get a job and make an effort for success. Just try to never give up.” 저는 또래 친구들보다 조금 일찍 사회생활을 시작했습니다. 집안형편이 많이 좋지 않았고 저는 일찍 독립해서 돈을 벌고 생계를 책임져야 했습니다. 물론 그 전부터 어떤것을 창작 해야한다는 목표의식조차 없을 어린시절부터 그림을 그려왔어요. 그림을 그리는 순간만큼 모든 아픔이나 힘든 마음들을 잊을 수 있었고, 시간이 흘러 직업적으로 그림을 그리고 누군가에게 내 작품을 보여줄 수 있을 때 부터 내가 그림을 그리며 느껴온 안정감, 위로 그리고 힘든 시기일수록 느껴온 희망의 감정을 공유하고 싶었습니다. 제가 만들어내는 예술을 포함한 세상 모든 예술은 저를 힘든 시간속에서 지탱하게 해주는 유일한 희망같은 존재입니다.

7. Where did you study?

I graduate Korea Animation High school in Korea with Animation major and also diploma of Graphic Design in Griffth University AUS but not a graduate. 저는 한국에서 애니메이션을 공부하고 호주에서 그래픽디자인과 영상을 공부했지만 졸업은 하지못했습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

Still working. Same as what I'm doing currently but show my work to more people and make more sympathy. 사실 지난 17년간 이 직업을 하면서도 동시에 생활을 위한 다른 많은 일들을 병행하며 해왔습니다. 하지만 이제는 조금더 나아가 제가 가장 사랑하는 이 일만으로도 생활이 조금은 여유로와질 수 있는 미래를 꿈꾸고 노력하고 있습니다. 5년뒤엔 지금까지 차곡차곡 쌓아온 제 그림들을 더 많은 사람들에게 보여주고 공감할 수 있는 사람이 되고싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

Still the same but I will married, haha. So it means, after when I get married I can draw more with a happy mind. (I know marriage is not just happiness) 지극히 평범하지만 어려운, 하지만 불가능 하지만은 않은 사랑하는 누군가와 가정을 꾸리고 거기서 오는 안전감과 행복감을 그림에 더해 더 멋진 창작을 하고 싶습니다. 거창한것 보다 더 많은 사람과 소통하고 평범한 삶 속에서 계속 소소한 행복을 느껴며 건강하게 작업을 이어나가고 싶습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Sympathy, consolation. 그림속 내용을 작가 본인이 설명을 할 수는 있지만, 그 그림에 담긴 의미와는 별개로 그림을 보고 어떤 감정을 느끼는건 관객의 몫입니다. 제 그림을 보는 분들이 기억속에 있던 어느날의 행복감을 꺼내 잠시 그 시간속으로 돌아가고, 상처로 남았던 기억이 혼자만의 것이 아니라는 사실에 위로받았으면 좋겠습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Everything except humans, except pets. haha, I love eating everything. 하하 저는 자랑은 아니지만 지난 반년간 원래의 몸무게에서 무려 15키로나 살이쪄서 열심히 다이어트를 하고있습니다. 그만큼 모든 음식을 좋아하며 싸이클 타는것을 무척이나 좋아하는 사람입니다.

12. Favourite book?

Haruki murakami in japan, and suk-won Lee, byung-rul Lee, ji-woong Heo in Korea. 저는 일본 소설가 무라카미 하루키의 소설들과 한국 작가인 이병률, 허지웅, 이석원의 글을 사랑합니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Not much play game but love music. all music. 게임은 거의 하지않으나 여자친구와 내기로 자동차 게임을 즐기며 음악은 가리지않고 모든 음악을 좋아합니다. 신나게 싸이클을 달릴때엔 니클백이나 스트라이퍼 같은 락음악도 즐겨듣지만 역시나 새벽에 작업을 할때면 감성적인 음악도 많이 듣는편입니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

enjoying coffee(also make my self. was working in coffee shop many years) and ride road cycle. 위에서도 말했듯 그림그리는 것과 책읽는것을 빼고 제가 가장 좋아하는 것은 싸이클 타기와 커피마시기 입니다. 물론 그것들이 전부일 수는 없겠지만요

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

um..maybe write something. actually i already try to write down my own book with my works. i hope can see my first book soon. 저는 아마 글을 쓰고있지 않았을까 생각을 합니다. 그리고 이 또다른 꿈은 지금도 조금씩 실행에 옮기고 있는 중입니다. 멀지않은 미래에 제가 쓴 글과 그림이 함께한 책을 볼 수 있게되길 바랍니다.\
