1. What's your story? Where are you from?

My name is Katsara Somrej, I am a freelance media designer and illustrator. Originally, I am from Thailand but have lived in Switzerland for more than half of my life. When I was a little girl, I moved around a lot. I grew up poor; while my mother had to work a lot, I was often alone. I barely had any toys, so I had to work with pen and paper and enjoyed it a lot. I was a quiet child, and even today I can express myself way better visually than with words. Naturally, I’m a profound and curious person, which is why I am enthusiastic about new technologies. It is easy for me to learn new programs and to combine different media.

I never wanted to study, although I had the potential. My mother was very disappointed when I decided against it. But I had made the right decision for me. I completed my apprenticeship as a mediamatician in Switzerland. It was a new profession at the time. It is a combination of multimedia, design, marketing, IT and administration. The perfect training for me, as I had many interests. After 3 years of professional experience (after 4 years apprenticeship), I realized that I was not happy with my job because I was creating something for someone else and not for myself. A lot of the work I did was based on the corporate design. I felt limited in creativity. Therefore I started my own business in November 2019.

Mein Name ist Katsara Somrej. Ich bin selbständige Media Designerin und Illustratorin. Ich komme ursprünglich aus Thailand und lebe mehr als mein halbes Leben lang in der Schweiz. Als ich ein kleines Mädchen war, bin ich oft umgezogen. Ich hatte kein privilegiertes Leben. Während meine Mutter viel arbeiten musste, war ich oft alleine. Spielzeuge hatte ich kaum, deshalb musste ich mich mit Stift und Papier beschäftigen und hatte viel Freude daran. Ich war ein ruhiges Kind, sogar heute kann ich mich mit Wörtern weniger gut ausdrücken als visuell. Ich bin von Natur aus ein tiefgründiger und neugieriger Mensch, weshalb ich mich für neue Technologien begeistere. Es ist für mich leicht neue Programme zu erlernen und die verschiedenen Medien zu kombinieren.

Ich wollte nie studieren, obwohl ich das Potenzial hatte. Meine Mutter war damals sehr enttäuscht, als ich mich dagegen entschieden habe. Aber ich habe für mich die richtige Entscheidung getroffen. Ich habe in der Schweiz die Lehre als Mediamatikerin absolviert. Es war damals ein neuer Beruf, eine Kombination aus Multimedia, Design, Marketing, IT und Administration. Genau die perfekte Ausbildung für mich, da ich viele Interessen hatte. Nach 3 Jahren Berufserfahrung (nach der 4-jährigen Ausbildung), habe ich gemerkt, dass ich mit meiner Tätigkeit nicht glücklich war, weil ich etwas für jemanden anderen kreiere und nicht für mich selbst. Viele Arbeiten, die ich gemacht habe, waren anhand des Corporate Designs. Ich fühlte mich in der Kreativität eingeschränkt. Deshalb habe ich mich im November 2019 Selbständig gemacht.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like friendly, earthy colours. I find them very harmonious together, and most of my illustrations depict strong women. I call my works positive illustrations with a touch of spirituality. Nature, plants, animals, as well as the moon and the sun play a big role. With small hidden animations I bring my illustrations to life.

Ich mag freundliche, erdige Farben. Ich finde sie wirken zusammen sehr harmonisch, dabei stellen die meisten meiner Illustrationen starke Frauen dar. Ich bezeichne meine Werke als positive Illustrationen mit einem Hauch von Spiritualität. Die Natur, Pflanzen, Tiere, sowie der Mond und die Sonne spielen eine Grosse Rolle. Mit kleinen versteckten Animationen bringe ich meine Illustrationen zum Leben.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I currently use Illustrator, Photoshop and After Effects because they are very compatible. But I'm thinking about buying an iPad Pro and getting into Procreate, which I've only heard good things about. I also like to travel and when I'm on the road, an iPad would probably be more practical.

Ich verwende momentan Illustrator, Photoshop und After Effects, weil die Programme miteinander sehr kompatibel sind. Ich überlege mir aber ein iPad Pro zu kaufen und mich mit Procreate zu befassen, worüber ich nur gutes gehört habe. Ausserdem reise ich gerne und wenn ich auf Reisen bin, wäre ein iPad sicher praktischer.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I always start with a cup of tea, relaxed music and incense sticks. I really like a pleasant atmosphere for working. Depending on how I feel, different ideas appear in my head. I do my research on Pinterest. I sketch out the best ideas and finally put them into practice.

Ich beginne immer mit einer Tasse Tee, entspannter Musik und Räucherstäbchen. Eine angenehme Atmosphäre zum Arbeiten mag ich sehr. Je nachdem wie ich mich fühle, tauchen unterschiedliche Ideen in meinem Kopf auf. Meine Recherche mache ich auf Pinterest. Die besten Ideen skizziere ich auf und setze sie schlussendlich um.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Strangely enough, quotes, worldly wisdoms and affirmations inspire me the most. I would say that this inspires my mind. And from nature and the people around me, I get visual inspiration.

Komischerweise inspirieren mich Zitate, Lebensweisheiten und Affirmationen am meisten. Ich würde sagen, dass das mein Geist inspiriert und die visuelle Inspiration bekomme ich von der Natur und die Menschen um mich herum.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art is the only way to be with me and myself. Through my work I want to awaken positive feelings in people. At some point, everyone has a bad day or a difficult period in life. One can often be influenced negatively by one’s environment and media. When I draw, I remind myself that happiness and peace come from within. All my works have a great meaning for me. It makes me very happy that many people feel empowered through my art.

Kunst ist die einzige Möglichkeit, mit mir und mich selbst zu sein. Durch meine Werke möchte ich positive Gefühle in jemanden erwecken. Jeder hat mal einen schlechten Tag oder einen schwierigen Abschnitt im Leben. Man kann sich vom Umfeld und Medien oft negativ beeinflussen lassen. Wenn ich zeichne, erinnere ich mich selbst daran, dass Glück und Frieden von Innen kommt. Alle meine Werke haben für mich eine grosse Bedeutung. Es macht mich sehr glücklich, dass viele Menschen sich durch meine Werke gestärkt fühlen.

7. Where did you study?

I did a basic apprenticeship year in ZLI (Zürcher Lehrbetriebsverband ICT). There I got to know the basic knowledge of different software. For the next three years I continued my apprenticeship in a company and completed the vocational diploma. That way I gained practical and theoretical experience.

Ich habe ein Basislehrjahr in ZLI (Zürcher Lehrbetriebsverband ICT) gemacht. Dort habe ich die Grundkenntnisse verschiedener Softwares kennengelernt. Die nächsten 3 Jahre habe ich die Lehre in einer Firma fortgeführt und nebenbei die Berufsmatura abgeschlossen. So habe ich praktische und theoretische Erfahrungen gesammelt.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I will have successfully built up a business so that I can travel and develop spiritually on the side. I want to get to know different cultures and hopefully pass on what I have learned to my future children.

In fünf Jahren habe ich erfolgreich ein Business aufgebaut, sodass ich nebenbei reisen und mich spirituell weiterentwickeln kann. Ich möchte verschiedene Kulturen kennenlernen und das gelernte hoffentlich an meine zukünftige Kinder weitergeben.

9. What about in ten?

My plan and dream is to open a design school in Thailand. I want to help the poor in particular, but everyone can attend as long as they are creative and motivated.

Mein Plan und Traum ist eine Design Schule in Thailand zu eröffnen. Ich möchte besonders den Armen helfen, aber alle können die Schule besuchen, solange sie Kreativität und Motivation mitbringen.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want people to feel empowered and go through life with a positive attitude. I simply want to make the world a better place.

Ich möchte, dass Menschen sich gestärkt fühlen und positiver durch das Leben gehen. Ich möchte einfach die Welt zu einem besseren Ort machen.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Since I was born in Thailand, Thai dishes are the best dishes in the world for me! What shouldn’t be missing is chilli. I also like seafood.

Da ich gebürtige Thailänderin bin, sind für mich thailändische Gerichte die besten Gerichte der Welt! Was bei mir nicht fehlen darf ist Chili. Ausserdem mag ich Seafood.

12. Favourite book?

I used to dislike reading because I thought there were only crime fiction, novels and fantasy books, which never interested me. I like watching videos and listening to podcasts about self-development, and there I heard about some books that were featured. Since then I have started reading books again. I do not have a favourite book, but I love the app Blinkist, because it summarizes the core messages of books, and that saves a lot of time.

Früher habe ich nicht gerne gelesen, weil ich dachte es gäbe nur Krimi, Romane und Phantasy Bücher, welche mich nie interessiert haben. Ich schaue sehr gerne Videos und höre Podcast über die Selbstentwicklung und da wurden einige Bücher vorgestellt. Seitdem habe ich wieder angefangen Bücher zu lesen. Ein Lieblingsbuch habe ich nicht. Ich liebe die App Blinkist weil sie die Kernaussagen der Bücher zusammenfassen. So spart man viel Zeit.

13. Favourite genre of music?

It’s a colourful mixture: hip-hop, dancehall, german rap, reggaeton, Latin, Thai music, EDM, lo-fi, instrumentals. At the moment I prefer listening to reggae.

Es ist eine bunte Mischung: Hip Hop, German Rap, Dancehall, Reggaeton, Latin, Thai Music, EDM, Lo-Fi, Instrumentals. Momentan höre am liebsten Reggae.

14. What are your hobbies?

I am happy to say that my hobby is my job. I also love traveling and learning new things. I have taught myself many skills.

Es macht mich glücklich zu sagen, dass mein Hobby mein Beruf ist. Ich liebe es ausserdem zu Reisen und neue Dinge zu erlernen. Ich habe mir viele Skills selbst beigebracht.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I would be either an architect or a fashion designer. They are both very creative professions, but I am happy to have found my way.

Ich wäre entweder Architektin oder Modedesignerin. Es sind beide sehr kreative Berufe, aber ich bin glücklich, dass ich meinen Weg gefunden habe.
