1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I’m Daniela Alarcon (Dandra online) from Buenos Aires, Argentina. I love paintings and I always loved picture books but I came to consider illustration as a career only two years ago. I started off making portraits of Jonah Hill and beautiful models with some cheap ass watercolors. It was HARD. Eventually the portraits became better and easier to make but I needed more so I switched over to landscape and other subjects. I thought it would be easier since I’d already been painting for several months. It actually was like starting from zero again but it was fun. Now I’m more focused on story telling through the paintings and designing merchandise and fun stickers or accessories I’d love to own. Me encantan los cuadros y siempre amé los libros ilustrados pero recién consideré la ilustración como carrera hace dos años. Empecé haciendo retratos de Jonah Hill y modelos con unas acuarelas chotísimas. Fue DIFÍCIL. En un punto los retratos se volvieron menos malos y más fáciles de hacer pero necesitaba más así que me metí con paisajes, escenarios y otros motivos. Pensé que iba a ser más fácil porque ya venía pintando desde hacía unos meses, pero fue como empezar desde cero (aunque estuvo bueno). Ahora estoy más metida en contar historias a través de las pinturas y en diseñar accesorios y stickers que me gustaría tener.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My aesthetic is continuously mutating since I’m searching for the exact representation of how I see the world, but I’ve noticed I like my work best when it’s colorful and with odd, whimsical characters or strange, “unusual” stuff going on. Mi estética está mutando continuamente ya que estoy buscando la forma exacta de representar el mundo según mi visión, pero me di cuenta que me gusta más mi trabajo cuando es bien colorido y con personajes “raritos” o cuando algo inusual está pasando en la escena.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Lately I’ve been really digging opaque mediums like acrylics because I like the boldness and vibrancy they give to the final artwork. My second current fave is colored pencils, something I used to hate when I was younger. Últimamente estoy re fan de las pinturas opacas como los acrílicos porque me gusta cómo vuelven las ilustraciones más fuertes y llamativas. Mi segundo medio favorito son los lápices de colores, algo que antes odiaba.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Usually I’d pick one idea from my notes, make research for references and concept development and then I start sketching and refining those sketches until I consider the image useful for what I want to say. Then I make color tests on photoshop and proceed to create the final piece. Generalmente elijo una idea de mis notas, busco en internet referencias o leo cosas para desarrollar más el concepto del trabajo y después boceteo y mejoro esos bocetos hasta que considero que la imagen está bien para lo que quiero decir. Luego pruebo colores en photoshop y me pongo a crear la pieza definitiva.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

There are A LOT of artists that inspire me for different reasons: some because of their theme, some for their technique skills, use of colour, sense of humor, trippyness, etc. I would say Hieronymus Bosch, David Bowie, Kanye West (for everything ever), Jonah Hill, Stephen Hillenburg (creator of SpongeBob Squarepants), Quentin Tarantino, Natalya Balnova, Mateusz Urbanowicz, Aitch Ro, Calum Heath, Manjit Thapp, Oliver Jeffers and many others. From home: Paula Sosa Holt, Pedro Luis Hordak, Apen, China Ocho, Florencia Pernicone, Ana San Felippo, Daniela Arias, Estampita, Elda Broglio, Flo Meije, Jazmin Varela, Josefina Schargorodsky, Maria Luque, Sole Otero, Alan Berry Rhys, Juan Pez, Gustavo Aimar and more. Non artists: Lagata (my ultra moody cat), honesty, angriness and humour. 6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It plays a very important part. Sometimes it’s beautiful and it makes me feel awesome and sometimes it makes me hate myself. It changes the way I see the world when I manage to make art that makes me laugh at something that usually makes me angry or sad. El arte juega un rol muy importante en mi vida. A veces es todo hermoso y me hace sentir en una nube y otras veces me hace odiarme fuerte. Cambia mi forma de ver el mundo cuando me hace reír de algo que usualmente me enoja o entristece.

7. Where did you study?

Mostly I studied at Youtube University for Broke Ass artists (don’t google, it doesn ́t exist). Now I study Illustration with Apen (Juan Devoto) and ceramics at “Escuela de Cerámica Fernando Arranz”. Estudié mayormente en la Universidad de Youtube para artistas sin un centavo (no existe realmente). Ahora estudio Ilustración con Apen (Juan Devoto) y cerámica en la “Escuela de Cerámica Fernando Arranz”.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I see myself making picture books for 30+ children and running with my bf our awesome illustrated ceramics brand. Me veo haciendo libros ilustrados para niños de más de 30 y manejando con mi novio nuestra marca fabulosa de cerámicas ilustradas.

9. What about in ten?

The same but living away from the city. Lo mismo pero lejos de la ciudad.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

$$$ and power. $$$ y poder.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

All carbs everything. Todo lo que tenga carbohidratos.

12. Favourite book?

13. Favourite genre of music?

I have music infatuations that could last a week, a month or years. Then I get sick at them and return after a while. Currently I’m going through my second love with 70’s Italo Disco, a genre I discovered through 2manyDjs (Belgian Djs) years ago. I love space music so much, it’s so trippy. Tengo obsesiones con la música que pueden durar una semana, un mes o años. Después me harto y vuelvo después de un tiempo. Actualmente estoy pasando por mi segundo amor con el Italo Disco de los 70, un género que descubrí hace años por medio de 2manyDjs (Djs Belgas). Amo la música espacial mal, la amo es tan flashera.

14. What are your hobbies?

Dumb internet Memes and Making up songs for my cats based on 80’s tunes. Memes malísimos de internet e inventar cancioncitas malísimas para mis gatas con la música de canciones de los 80.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?
