1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I’m Eko. I was born in Tokyo and moved to France when I was five years old and spent almost my entire elementary school years there. I was the kind of kid who drew pictures all the time, and I have always loved drawing, but I once gave up on my painting career when I was deciding which university to enroll in. After graduating from college, I worked for a manufacturing company for five years and for an event planning company for two years. Then, when I was posting my artwork on Instagram, I had a chance to be offered a job by a publisher, which led me to become an illustrator. Currently, I am working in a wide range of fields including books, magazines, websites, and products.

はじめまして。イラストレーターのしのはらえこです。東京都出身です。5歳の時にフランスに引っ越して、小学校は丸々そこで過ごしました。ずっと絵を描いているような子供で、ずっと絵が好きでしたが、大学進学時に絵を描く道は一度諦めてしまいました。大学卒業後、メーカーで5年、イベントや商業施設の企画会社で2年ほど勤めました。その後、インスタグラムで趣味の絵を投稿していたところ、ありがたいことに出版社の方から本のイラストのお仕事をいただき、それをきっかけに、本格的にイラストレーターを目指すようになりました。現在は、本や雑誌、web、グッズなど幅広い分野でお仕事をさせていただいています。

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I often draw pictures based on the theme of the emotions and imaginary world of childhood and adolescence. My inspiration often comes from my personal memories. That’s why I mostly draw women and girls. I try to draw pictures that capture a scene from ordinary life and project the feelings and stories of the characters in it.

子供の頃や思春期の頃の繊細な感情や、空想の世界をテーマに絵を描くことが多いです。自分の個人的な思い出などからインスピレーションを膨らませることが多いため、モチーフは女の子がメインです。何気ない日常の中の一場面を切り取って、そこに登場人物の気持ちやストーリーが投影されているような絵を描きたいなと思っています。

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Currently, I mainly use watercolor paper and colored pencils as I can create flat expressions while retaining warm textures. Some people say that it looks like it takes a lot of work, but I actually love the time I spend coloring, so I think I will keep this style for the time being.  

現在は主に水彩紙と色鉛筆を使って絵を描いています。温かみのあるテクスチャーを残しながら平面的なフラットな表現ができるところが気に入っています。「手間がかかりそう」と言われることがありますが、実は色を塗っている時間が一番好きなので、当分このスタイルで絵を描くと思います。

4. What is your artistic process like?

First, I draw a rough sketch on a notebook to decide on the general composition and motif. Then I make a draft digitally as it’s easier to consider various compositions and color schemes. After that, I print out the line drawing, trace it onto watercolor paper, and color it with colored pencils.

まずはざっくりとしたラフをノートなどに描いて、大体の構図やモチーフが決まったらデジタルで下書きを作成します。デジタルで作成するのは、構図や配色を色々と検討しやすいからです。この時に配色もほとんど決定します。その後、できあがった線画を印刷して、水彩紙にトレースして、色鉛筆で着彩していきます。

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

As I mentioned earlier, my inspiration mainly comes from my own memories and feelings. I also try to look at as many artworks, photos, designs on the Internet as I can.  

一番はさきほど言ったとおり、自分自身の昔の思い出や感情です。あとは、普段からインターネットでたくさんアート作品や写真、デザインなども見るようにしています。

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I hadn't painted for a long time since I gave up on my painting career, but I had always felt that something was missing. I thought that my desire to create would be fulfilled by being involved in the manufacturing of products or developing concepts at a planning company, but it was not. I finally realized that expressing myself directly through art was what I felt most comfortable with.

絵の道を諦めてから、ずっと絵を描いていなかったのですが、ずっと物足りなさを感じていました。メーカーで製品の製造に携わったり、企画会社に入ってコンセプトを考えたりするプロセスで創造することへの欲求を満たせるかと思いましたが、やはり直接的に自分で表現することが一番しっくりくるということに気がつきました。

7. Where did you study?

My major at university was education, which had nothing to do with art. After I decided to become an illustrator, I started attending “MJ Illustrations”, a school for professional illustrators organized by Mr. Toru Minegishi, a famous illustrator in Japan. In this school, I learned a lot about what illustrators are expected to do in their jobs. I also received a lot of inspiration from my seniors and fellow illustrators.

大学は教育学部で、絵とは全く無関係でした。本格的にイラストレーターを目指そうと決めてから、イラストレーター峰岸達先生が主催されているMJイラストレーションズというプロのイラストレーターを目指すための塾に通い始めました。それまで独学で描いていたので、この塾では仕事ではどのようなことを求められるかなどを学びました。また、先輩や同期のイラストレーターの方々からもたくさん刺激をもらっています。

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would like to hold a solo exhibition in Japan. Also, I would like to expand my activities in various fields (publishing, advertising, music, etc.).

個展を開催してみたいです。また、出版関係、広告、音楽など、様々な分野へ活躍の場を広げたいです。

9. What about in ten?

Hold exhibitions overseas and work for overseas projects.

海外での展示会の開催や、海外のお仕事をしたいです。

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

It would be great if I could make someone happy with my drawings, but most of all I want to enjoy the process of drawing myself.  

少しでも誰かに喜んで貰えれば最高ですが、一番は自分自身が絵を描くプロセスを楽しみたいです。

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Curry and rice, spicy food in general

12. Favourite book?

Mystery novels

13. Favourite genre of music?

I don't have a specific one in mind, but I like to listen to the radio and discover new songs that I don't know.

特にこれと決めたものはなくて、ラジオを聞きながら知らない曲を発見するのが好きです。

14. What are your hobbies?

I used to travel a lot and I especially enjoyed my trip to Southeast Asian countries. Hope I'll be able to travel abroad again soon... Apart from that, Netflix, listening to the radio, watching comedy shows, etc.

昔は海外旅行に行くのが好きでした。特に東南アジアの国々をあちこち旅行したのは良い思い出です。またいけるようになるといいのですが···。あとはNetflix、ラジオ、お笑いなど。

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I once wanted to be an architect, but I gave up because I was too bad at math and physics... （I admire people who are into science…）

建築家になりたいと思ったことがありますが、数学や物理があまりにも苦手で諦めました。（理系の方に憧れます。）
