1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, my name is Song-Eun-O I’m an illustrator from Seoul, South Korea. I’m only in a beginner in the world of illustration but I hope to become an illustrator who can provide rest and healing for one’s mind.

1. 당신의 이야기를 들려주세요. 어디서 왔나요? 안녕하세요, 저는 한국의 서울에 살고있는 일러스트레이터 송은오입니다. 아직은 시작 단계에 있는 일러스트레이터 입니다.  앞으로 누군가에게 마음의 휴식과 치유가 될 수 있는 그림을 그리고 싶습니다. 


2. Tell us about your aesthetic

I like epicene images. Rather than sophisticated or realistic images I prefer something simple and concise. To add on i prefer low temperature colors, instead of drawing a landscape realistically I prefer to draw with simple shapes. Definition of beautiful differ widely, as for me something beautiful is less of fancy and more about the little things that happen daily. Images that provide a serene, comforting feelings are what I love.

2.당신의 미학에 대해 들려주세요. 나는 중성적인 이미지를 좋아합니다. 복잡하고, 사실적인 것 보다는 단순하고 간결한 것을 추구합니다. 색감도 조금은 채도가 낮은, 풍경화도 사실적인 것보다는 단순한 덩어리로 표현되는 것. 아름다움은 개인차가 크지만, 아름답다고 생각하는 화려함 보다는 소소한 것들을 좋아합니다. 단순한 이미지에서 고요한 분위기가 흐르는 것을 사랑합니다. 


3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like to work on my iPad. For a lazy person like me, iPad is a perfect tool. In the past, I used to work with acrylic paint, pencils, and pen. However, having limited options to fix the artwork made me keep distance from them. My biggest attraction towards the iPad is the convenience and the fact that I can draw with it wherever I go.
 


3.당신이 가장 좋아하는 작업 툴은 무엇인가요? 이유는요? 아이패드로 작업하는 것을 좋아합니다. 게으른 저에겐 정말 완벽한 도구입니다. 예전엔 물감과 연필, 펜으로 작업을 했었습니다. 하지만 수정하는 상황에서 어려움이 많아 멀리하게된 것 같습니다 무엇보다 게으른 저에겐, 장소에 구애받지 않고 어디서나 그릴 수 있다는 것이 큰 매력인것 같습니다. 


4. What is your artistic process like?

Normally I get inspired by the environment, when I feel a positive vibe of a place, I take a picture. And as I think about my time spent I remember certain people or objects and use that as a reference. I am drawn to the charm of drawing specific images as I reminisce about them.  


4. 당신의 예술적 창작 과정은 어떻게 되나요? 보통은 어느 장소, 그 곳에서 좋은 느낌을 받으면 사진을 찍습니다.  그리고 그 때의 분위기를 떠올리며 사진이나 인물을 참고하며 작업을 합니다. 특정한 어떤 인물에 대한 매력을 느끼면 간결하게 그 분위기를 그리는 연습을 합니다. 
 
 


5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I enjoy the quietness and the calmness of nature landscape; the quietness from nature, and the quietness of a city, and the quietness of a room. Since I’m attracted to this certain mood, i try my best to express it in my drawings.
 


5. 어떤 것들이 당신의 작업에 영감을 주나요?
 나는 고요한 분위기나, 풍경을 좋아합니다.  자연에서 오는 고요함, 도시에서 오는 고요함도 나의 방에서 오는 고요함도. 이런 분위기를 좋아하다 보니, 지금은 그 느낌을 표현하려고 노력하는 것 같습니다. 
 
 


6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Images are an escape of my reality. As I live in a hectic world a moment of art helps me keep my head clear. During my time drawing I feel a certain comfort. It faces me quietly and my view of the world become softer than before. 
 


6. 예술은 당신의 삶에서 어떤 역할을 하나요? 그리고 당신이 세상을 보는 관점에 어떤 변화를 주나요? 그림은 나에게 현실에서 도피하는 역할을 합니다. 정신없고 숨막히게 느껴지는 현실에서 그림을 그리고 있으면 잠시나마머리속이 맑아지는 기분을 받습니다. 그림그리는 시간속에서 나 스스로 치유를 받게 됩니다. 그리고 조용하게 나와 마주하게 되며,  조금은 세상을 보는 시선이 부드러워집니다.
 
 
 


7. Where did you study?

Art has always been a part of my daily life ever since I was young. I started to learn art seriously during high school, and majored in western painting for 2 years and left the university.
 


7. 어디서 공부했나요? 그림은 어렸을 때부터 늘 그리는 일상이었습니다.  고등학교 때부터 본격적인 시각디자인을 배웠고, 대학에서 서양화 전공 공부를 2년정도 배우다가 중퇴하였습니다. 
 
 


8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In the time of 5 years I see myself more experienced, with different results of exploring. I’d like to spend more time communicating with people who likes my artwork. 


8. 5년 후에 당신은 어떤 모습일거라 생각하나요? 에이전시에서 일하고 있을까요? 지금은 일러스트레이터로 시작의 시점입니다.  아마 5년후엔 좀더 많은 작업의 결과물로 다양한 형태로 나의 그림을 좋아해주는 사람들과 소통하며 지낼 것 같습니다. 
 
 
 


9. What about in ten?

I’d like to move to the countryside with my husband where I can wake up to a place rich with nature where I will be more inspired to draw. It’s not realistic but more of a dream that I’d like to achieve one day.
 


9.10년 후에는요? 지금의 나의 남편과 도시가 아닌 조용한 시골로 내려가 좀 더 풍요롭고 멋진 풍경을 담는 그림을 그리고 싶습니다.  현실적이지 않은 꿈인것 같지만, 이루고 싶습니다. 

 


10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want my artwork to help those who live a hectic life. I imagine my painting in their living rooms or on their desk that consoles them of their pain or give them a moment away from their busy life
 


10. 당신의 예술로 무엇을 성취하고 싶은가요? 정신없이 하루를 보내는 누군가들에게 나의 그림이 누군가의 방, 누군가의 거실, 누군가의 책상 위,  그 벽면에 조그맣게 붙어서 잠시나마 위로나 기쁨, 치유가 되는 형태로 변했으면 합니다. 
 
 
 


11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

There are many delicious dishes in Korea. Out of them all I enjoy eating Bibimbap with lots of vegetables. 


11. 자, 우리에게 당신의 인간적인 부분을 조금 들려주세요. 당신이 제일 좋아하는 음식은 무엇인가요?
 한국에는 정말 맛있는 음식이 많습니다.  그 중에서도 가장 좋아하는 음식은 채소를 많이 담아 먹을 수 있는 ‘비빔밥’입니다. 
 
 
 


12. Favourite book?

When I was young I liked Murakama Haruki’s “Norwegian Wood.”Now I like Han Kang’s “Whiteness.” 


12. 제일 좋아하는 책은요?
 어렸을 때는 무라카미 하루키의 ‘ 상실의 시대' , 요즘은 한강의  ‘흰’
 
 
 
 


13. Favourite genre of music?

I don’t enjoy music these days. As time passes by I caught myself away from music. From time to time I listen to acoustic guitar pieces.  


13. 제일 좋아하는 음악장르는? 요즘은 음악을 좋아하지 않습니다. 점점 시간이 흐르면서 음악을 듣지 않게 되는것 같습니다.  아주 가끔 가사가 없는 어쿠스틱 기타 연주곡을 듣습니다. 
 
 
 


14. What are your hobbies? 

I loves going on walks in the mountain. The energy I get from nature is outstanding.
 


14. 취미는 무엇이에요?
 산으로 산책가는 것입니다. 자연에서 받는 에너지는 엄청난 것 같습니다.
 
 
 
 


15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I’d like to be a constructer who can design homes. Because I’ve spent my life in the city I’ve always been attracted to home that’s designed for comfort


15. 만약 당신이 아티스트가 아니었다면 어떤 일을 했을까요? 잠시나마 집을 만드는 건축가가 되어보고 싶었습니다.  어렸을때부터 도시속에서 살아와서 인지 안락한 집에 대한 관심이 많았습니다.
