1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi! I’m Giovanna Giuliano I live and work in Trieste (north east of Italy) but it’s been years I’m thinking about moving to northern europe. I have 2 full time jobs: freelance illustrator and mom… I love them both but it’d be great to have 20 more hours a day :) Ciao! Sono Giovanna Giuliano vivo e lavoro a Trieste (nord est Italia) anche se sono anni che medito di spostarmi in nord europa. Svolgo 2 lavori fulltime : illustratrice freelance e mamma … li amo entrambi ma sarebbe bello avere una ventina di ore in più al giorno :)

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I love plants with weird shapes and I have a passion for the color red and I can loose hours matching colors and creating new and different color palettes. Amo le piante dalle forme strane, ho una passione per il rosso e perdo ore ad accostare colori e creare palette sempre differenti.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I used to be a strong supporter of free hand drawing and acrylic colors, but since 2 years ago I converted myself to digital technology, now my artworks are 100% made with a graphic tablet. Ero una forte sostenitrice del disegno a mano libera e i colori acrilici, ma da due anni mi sono convertita al digitale,ora tanti dei miei disegni sono fati al 100% su tavoletta grafica

4. What is your artistic process like?

It depends, there isn’t always a well defined process. Sometime everything starts from one or 2 color palettes or from a location, other times I let myself carried away by the brief. Let’s say that I dedicated myself mostly to the color palette and to the atmosphere. Dipende, non c’è sempre un processo ben definito. Alle volte parte tutto da una palette colori o da una location, alle volte mi lascio travolgere da breif.Diciamo che quello a cui mi dedico di più sono le prove colore e la ricerca dell’atmosfera..

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I can find inspiration in my kid’s socks sometime. Sometime I’m carried away by the infinite Pinterest flow. Then there’s a multitude of inspiring people, from interior designers to photographers, illustrators, garden designers… L’ispirazione alle volte le trovo tra i calzini a righe di mio figlio. Alle volte mi lascio trascinare dal flusso infinito di Pinterest.Di persone inspiranti poi ce ne sono una moltitudine infinita, da arredatori, a fotografi a illustratori a progettisti di giardini.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It has no role… it’s just a part of my life. The fact I’m doing art hasn’t changed the way I look at the world, it’s just a tool I have to tell the others how I see the world. Non ha un ruolo, è semplicemente parte della mia vita. Il fatto di fare arte non ha cambiato il modo di vedere il mondo, semplicemente mi ha dato un mezzo per spiegare agli altri come lo vedo io ogni giorno.

7. Where did you study?

I’ve studied graphic design at the Academy of Arts in Venice. I’ve dedicated most of my life to graphic advertising and then to kids illustration and since the last times to editorial illustration, but I’d like to try to do draw for the advertising in the near future. Ho studiato progettazione grafica all’ accademia di belle arti a venezia. HO dedicato parte della mia vita alla grafica pubblicitaria poi all’illustrazione per l’infanzia e da un po’ di anni all’illustrazione editoriale ma vorrei provare a disegnare anche per l’adv in un futuro prossimo

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

5 years ago I would have never told I could be where I am today. 5 years can change so many things. I’d like to keep doing what I’m doing now and then I’d love to start drawing for adv, doing more personal projects and more book covers. 5 anni fa non mi sarei mai immaginata di essere dove sono ora, 5 anni cambiano tantissime cose. Mi piacerebbe continuare quello che faccio e iniziare a disegnare per l’adv, fare più progetti personale e più cover per romanzi.

9. What about in ten?

HA! that’s really too much! I hope to be able to do what I’m doing now but way better :) Ah, davvero troppo tempo!Spero di fare quello che faccio oggi ma decisamente meglio di ora

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope to be able to give people another point of view, I hope I’m able to tell a story and have people dreaming and carried away in new imaginary places. Spero di dare un’altro punto di vista,di raccontare una storia, di far sognare le persone e di trasportarle in posti immaginari.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Well cooked and well seasoned hamburgers and my grandma roast-beef Hamburger cucinati bene e ben conditi e il roast-beef della nonna.

12. Favourite book?

I love almost everything by Isabel Allende Amo quasi tutti quelli della Isabel Allende

13. Favourite genre of music?

Rock, rokabilly, boogie

14. What are your hobbies?

Drawing… so it’s really working :) Disegnare e quindi lavorare :)

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

In my childhood I thought I was going to be a classic ballet dancer but then I realised there was too much toulle for my tastes. Nella mia infanzia pensavo di diventare una ballerina di danza classica ma poi ho realizzato che c’era troppo toulle per i miei gusti :)
