1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I'm HYONNA(nickname) living in Seoul, Korea. Since I was a little girl, I was into art and design. That’s when I started to do my works. After I graduated from Univ. I worked in a company as a designer. But, not long after, I quit. 1. 당신의 이야기는 무엇인가요? 당신은 어디서 왔나요? 안녕하세요. 저는 대한민국 서울에서 살고있는 HYONNA(nickname) 라고 합니다. 저는 어릴때부터 예술과 디자인을 좋아했고, 혼자서 디자인 프로그램으로 다양한 작업을 하는것도 좋아했습니다. 대학 졸업 후, 회사에서 디자이너로 일을 하다가 그만두고 2달 전부터 개인작업을 시작하게 되었습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Most of my works are colorful. but, the story in it is not so fancy as it looks. My work doesn’t contain any positive message. It's full of negative feelings. These days I’m into notion ‘negative’. What I’m doing is rewriting the notion ‘negative’ in my own style. 2. 당신의 미학에 대해 말해주세요. 저의 작품은 대부분 화려합니다. 하지만 작품의 이야기는 보기와는 다릅니다. 저의 작품은 어떠한 긍정적인 메세지가 없어요. 온전히 부정적인 감정들로 가득차있습니다. 요즘은 '부정'의 개념에 대한 호기심을 저만의 스타일로 해석하고 표현하려고 노력중입니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like to work with ‘Photoshop’ and ‘Illustrator’. Photoshop makes it easier to make variable and colorful effects. Whereas Illustrator is good at making simple objects. 3. 당신이 좋아하는 도구(작업 툴)와 그 이유에 대해 알려주세요, 제일 좋아하는 도구는 포토샵 & 일러스트레이터 입니다. 포토샵은 좀 더 다양하고 화려한 효과를 주기에 좋고, 일러스트레이터는 깔끔하고 심플한 오브젝트를 구현하기에 편리합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

First, I start with looking back what happened to me. In that, I find negative feelings in it, then I sketch the image in my head. Next, I search for the source that suits my image. When I find the source, that’s when I start my work. 4. 당신의 작업 과정은 어떻게 되나요? 저는 작업을 시작할때 주변 환경들 그리고 제 경험을 떠올리고, 그 속에서 부정적인 기억들을 찾아냅니다, 그것을 머릿속에 그린 후 , 작업에 사용할 소스를 찾아내어 작업합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

From everything. Everything is art to me. 5. 무엇이 당신의 작업에 영감을 주나요? 모든것들에서 영감을 얻습니다. 이 세상의 모든것들이 제게는 예술입니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art is one thing I could push myself into. Without it, my life would be boring as hell. It’s the main thing that makes me alive. 6. 예술은 당신의 삶에서 어떤 의미인가요? 그리고 그것이 세상을 보는 관점에대해 어떠한 변화를 주고있나요? 제 삶에서 아트란 제 전부라고 해도 과언이 아닙니다. 아트가 없는 삶은 따분하고 지옥입니다. 아트는 제가 삶을 살아가는 이유 중 가장 첫번째 입니다.

7. Where did you study?

When I was 12, I saw pretty images on internet. Somehow I knew those images were made by photoshop. At that time, photoshop was not common in Korea, so, I had to study by own. Of course the skills too. When I was 19, I had chance to learn pure arts. And till now that helps me a lot when I’m doing my work. 7. 어디서 공부했나요? 12살에 인터넷에서 화려한 이미지를 많이 보았는데, 그게 포토샵을 이용한 이미지라고 알게 된 후에 독학을 했어요. 당시, 한국에서 포토샵이 보편화가 되어 있지 않았기에 스킬은 프로그램을 사용하면서 터득했습니다. 그리고, 19살에 순수미술을 배웠는데 그 배운 경험은 제가 작업할때에 좋은 영향을 많이 주었어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

I might be a somebody’s wife and would(want to) be working as a freelancer in design fields. 8. 5년 뒤에는 무엇을 하고 있을 것 같나요? 에이전시에서 일을 하고 있을까요? 5년 뒤에는 누군가의 아내가 되어, 육아를 하면서 디자인 관련 프리랜서로 일을 하고 있을 것 같아요.

9. What about in ten?

Still I’ll be working as a freelancer in design field. I want to work as a designer for my entire life. 9. 10년 후에는요? 10년 뒤에도 저는 디자인을 하며 살고 있을 것 같아요. 디자인은 죽기 전까지 하고 싶어요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Nothing special. I just want to be happy. When I’m doing my work, I’m happy. That’s why I started this. and I want to die happy. 10. 아트를 하면서 당신이 이루고자 하는 것이 무엇인가요? 아트를 하면서 제가 이루고자 싶은 것은, 제가 행복해지는 것이고, 행복하게 죽고싶은거에요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

It changes all the time, so It’s really hard for me to pick one. Guess I should just say I like all the kind of food. Unless they look exceptionally grotesque. 11. 그럼, 당신의 인간적인 부분을 조금 알려주세요. 좋아하는 음식은 무엇인가요? 매번 바뀌어서 하나만 딱 찝어서 말하기가 힘들어요. 저는 모든 음식들을 좋아하거든요.

12. Favourite book?

I favorite is ‘보통의 존재’ written by ‘이석원’. He’s vocalist in band ‘언니네이발관.’ I like the way he says, Free and open. And I like detective story. 12. 좋아하는 책은 무엇인가요? 좋아하는 책은 한국의 밴드 '언니네 이발관'의 보컬리스트인 '이석원'이 쓴 '보통의 존재' 라는 책입니다. 매우 단조롭고 덤덤하지만 현실적이고 솔직한 매력이 담겨져 있어요.. 그리고 추리소설을 좋아합니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Modern rock, Aucoustic, House music. 13. 좋아하는 음악 장르는 무엇인가요? 좋아하는 음악 장르는 모던락, 어쿠스틱, 하우스 장르를 좋아해요.

14. What are your hobbies?

At my free time, I assemble my Gunpla kit or do design work. 14. 당신의 취미는 무엇입니까? 취미는 건담 프라모델을 조립하거나, 집에서 디자인 작업을 하는 것입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Probably a common office worker. But, I’ll trying hard to become an artist. Sounds awful to think of me not being artist. 15. 만약 당신이 아티스트가 아니었다면 무엇을 하고 있었을까요? 아티스트가 아니었다면 아마 평범한 사무직을 하고 있었을 것 같아요.. 하지만 어떻게서든 아티스트 혹은 디자이너가 되기 위해 노력했을 것이고, 디자이너가 아닌 나를 상상하는건 매우 끔찍합니다.
