1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I’m DY Kim and I’m working as an illustrator at a publishing company called ‘JANG CHA’ and doing my own works as a freelancer too. 안녕하세요. 김다예입니다. 한국 서울에서 일하고 있어요. <JANGCHA> 라는 출판사에서 일러스트레이터로 일하면서 동시에 프리랜서로도 활동하고 있어요.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

People. I love the situation/scenes where people are in or create. So the mains of my works are always the people. I like adding a subtle wit and metaphorical expressions to my work and I want them to be felt unnoticeably. I always try my expressions minimum but try to appeal/attract through colors wherever I can. 사람, 사람들이 만들어내는 상황과 장면들을 좋아해요. 그래서 제 그림의 주인공은 언제나 '사람'이에요. 설명적이지 않아도 은근하게 느껴지는 위트와 은유적인 표현들이 느껴지게 작업하는걸 좋아해요. 단순한 표현과 매력적인 색감을 담아내려고 항상 노력해요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Illustrator or Photoshop. I have to thank these tools as they lessen the chance of ruining the work. But when I feel bored with digital work, I use pencils. 일러스트레이터 혹은 포토샵이요. 실패하는 과정을 덜어주는 고마운 툴이에요. 가끔 디지털 작업에 질리면 간단히 연필, 색연필 등으로 작업해요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Most of the time, I paint the images that derive from writings, photos and music. They could also come from just people I walked pass and friends I met. Even some fun chi-chats with friends give me enough to visualize. I used to write down those moments but there are times I forget where I put those memos haha. Sometimes I just open the window and start drawing. It sometimes surprises me where leads me to, something I completely didn’t expect. 대부분 글이나 사진, 음악에서 파생되어 상상하던 이미지를 그려요. 지나쳐가던 사람들이나 만났던 사람들, 친구들과 하던 이야기에서도 재밌던 일들을 그리곤 해요. 예전에는 메모도 했는데 메모해놓은 것도 까먹을 때가 있더라구요. 하하하. 가끔 창을 띄우고 아무렇게나 일단 그려보기도 해요. 그리다보면 처음에 생각했던 것과 전혀 다른 걸 그릴 때도 있어요.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Cool people dressed funny, still photos, music that I’m listening now and music videos. 재미있는 옷을 입은 멋진 사람들, 정물 사진들, 듣고 있는 음악들, 그리고 뮤직비디오.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I love drawing and it earns me money! I do something I like and that helps me with living, then I keep drawing and living my life. 그림을 그리는게 제일 좋아하는 일인데, 덕분에 돈도 벌고 있어요. 좋아하는 일을 하면서 생활을 이어나가고 다시 그림을 그리고. 삶을 반복하게 만들어줘요.

7. Where did you study?

I went to Seoul Women’s University and majored in Visual Design. I didn’t do much of illustrations at school but I learned a lot after I graduated and started working. 서울에 있는 서울여자대학교 시각디자인학과에서 공부했어요. 사실 학교에선 지금 하고 있는 일러스트에 대해 깊게 공부한 적이 없어요. 평소에 작업하던 것들과 졸업하고 일을 하면서 배운게 오히려 큰 것 같아요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I will still be drawing and possibly I would like to stretch my works from digital to canvas. It’s still a plan but I am also thinking about taking some courses in overseas. 계속 같은 일을 하고 있겠죠. 그 때쯤엔 디지털 작업말고 캔버스 작업들도 하고 싶어요. 아니면 막연한 계획인데 해외에서 공부하고 있었으면 좋겠어요.

9. What about in ten?

I will be very happy to see more people liking my works. I would like my work and myself be better and greater and more recognized in 10 years. 좋은 작업들로 더 유명해졌으면 좋겠어요. 10년 후엔 일적으로도, 사람 자체로도 더 대단하고 훌륭한 사람이 되어 있길 바랍니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want people to like what I like. 내가 좋아하는 것들을 사람들도 좋아하게 만들고 싶어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

12. Favourite book?

I used to love reading Paul Auster’s books and these days I’m reading more books about politics, social and cultures. paul auster 의 책들을 좋아했어요. 요새는 소설보다 정치나 사회 문화에 관련된 책에 관심이 있어요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

When it comes to music, I listen anything and everything. Recently I’m into 80’s and 90’s. Youtube does a great job playing similar styles and songs, and I let him while I’m working. 이것저것 많이 들어요. 요새는 80-90년대 노래를 많이 들었어요. youtube에서 자동으로 비슷한 노래들이 나오는데 작업할 때는 주로 그렇게 많이 틀어놔요.

14. What are your hobbies?

I started swimming recently and I love it! 특별히 없는데, 얼마 전에 시작한 수영이라고 말할게요.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Just imagining - I think I could run a café or become a florist, a potter or a chef! 막연하게 꿈만 꾸는거라면 해보고 싶은건 조금 있어요. 카페, 플로리스트, 도예가, 요리사 등등
