1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I live in South Korea. I’m Lee Hyun-Jeong who works as a freelance illustrator. I almost always work with colored pencils. 저는 한국에서 색연필 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있는 이현정(Lee Hyun-Jeong)입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My paintings make the viewer feel comfortable. The topic of my work is ‘All my memories,’ which usually means empathy and familiarity with parents or daily life. So, I don't usually use provocative colors. So when the viewer looks at my picture, I always focus on reminding them of their warm memories. 저의 그림은 보는 사람이 편안함을 느끼게 만드는것 같아요. 작업 주제는 ‘나의 모든 기억들’인데 보통 부모님 또는 일상생활에서의 공감과 친숙함을 의미합니다. 그래서 보통 자극적인 색감은 사용하지 않아요. 그렇기때문에 그림을 보는 사람이 저의 그림을 봤을때 그들의 따뜻한 기억을 떠올리게 하는데에 항상 집중합니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I usually use colored pencils, and I use Photoshop or Illustration programs to modify them as needed. But these days, I've started digital drawing with an iPad, and I love being able to modify and use a lot of different colors. 주로 색연필을 사용하고 필요에 따라 포토샵이나 일러스트레이션 프로그램을 이용해 수정합니다. 하지만 요즘엔 아이패드를 이용한 디지털 드로잉을 시작했는데 수정이 간단하고 아주 다양한 색깔을 접해볼 수 있다는게 좋더라구요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

The process is only sketches and colors, but as you know, color pencils cannot be modified. So, when I sketch, I make a lot of corrections until I get the line I wan 과정은 스케치와 채색뿐이지만, 알다시피 색연필은 수정을 할 수 없어요. 그렇기 때문에 스케치과정에서 원하는 선이 나올때까지 수정을 많이 하는 편입니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I got a lot of inspiration from my childhood memories or parents when I drew a family theme. And besides, I think I'm inspired by all the people I see, the movies, the objects, the scenery. In a way, inspiration begins all over the author's own memories. For example, if you were inspired by a child on the road today, you would recall the time you were inspired when you work. That's the inspiration that comes from memory. 가족을 주제로 그릴때는 저의 어린시절의 기억 또는 부모님으로부터 영감을 많이 얻었어요. 그리고 그 외에는 저의 눈으로 보이는 모든 사람들, 봤던 영화, 사물, 풍경으로부터 영감을 얻는 것 같아요. 사실 어떻게 보면 영감은 작가 자신의 기억에서 모든게 시작된다고봐요. 예를들어 오늘 길을 가다가 한 어린아이로부터 영감을 받았다고 한다면, 작업을 할때 그 영감을 받았던 시간을 떠올리게 되잖아요. 그게 기억으로부터 시작되는 영감인거죠.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It’s the consolation I receive from everyday life. I am comforted, and someone is comforted through my paintings. Sometimes a day goes by meaninglessly, and sometimes special. Of course, sometimes it feels sad. So, all the comfort I get makes me keep challenging and expressing what I want. 저의 예술은 일상에서 받는 위로라고 할 수 있어요. 제가 위로를 받기도 하고 누군가 내 그림을 통해 위로를 받기도 하죠. 일상이 무의미하게 흘러갈때도 있고 특별하게 느껴질때도 있어요. 물론 슬플때도 있겠죠. 그럴때받는 모든 위로들이 저를 계속 도전하게 만들고 원하는 것을 표현하게 만드는 것 같아요.

7. Where did you study?

Actually, I didn't major in painting. Ironically, I majored in Indian trade in college. But, I liked drawing since I was young, and I think it was natural. 사실 전 그림을 전공하지 않았어요. 아이러니하게도 대학에서 인도어과를 전공했어요. 하지만 어렸을때부터 그림그리기를 좋아했고, 그건 자연스러웠던것 같아요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope I’ll be much more stable as an illustrator then. And I hope that with the production of goods, more people will see my paintings. 지금은 여전히 배우고있고 부족하지만 그때는 훨씬 일러스트레이터로써 안정적이기를 바래요. 그리고 굿즈 제작을 해서 더 많은 사람들이 제 그림을 접할 수 있게 만들 계획입니다.

9. What about in ten?

You can see my paintings in the world. If possible, I hope to have a variety of collaborations with different authors. 전 세계에서 제 그림을 볼 수 있지 않을까요? 가능하다면 다른 여러 작가들과 다양한 협업을 하고 있다면 좋겠네요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

First of all, I hope everyone will keep warm through my paintings. And I hope my paintings will spread in as many different formats as possible. I hope there will be more opportunities to show my painting style in various fields such as books, goods and posters. 일단, 계속해서 모든 사람들이 제 그림을 통해서 마음이 따뜻해지는 거예요. 그리고 최대한 많은 곳에 다양한 형식으로 저의 그림들이 퍼져서 책이나 굿즈, 포스터 등 다양한 분야에 내 그림체를 보여 줄 수 있는 기회들이 많아졌으면 좋겠어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

My favorite food is Spicy tomato pasta and dumpling 매운 토마토 파스타 그리고 만두

12. Favourite book?

I like David Nello’s book "Mr. Rutin." 데이비드 넬로의 ‘루틴씨’라는 책을 좋아합니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like all kinds of songs. I usually listen to music on the radio, so I can listen to various genres of the world. These days, I'm into Spanish songs. I don't know what genre it is, but I'm into this singer ‘Feten Feten’. I listen to it until I'm sick of it. 모든 장르의 노래를 좋아해요. 보통 라디오로 노래를 듣는 편이라 세계의 다양한 장르를 접해요. 요즘에는 스페인 노래에 빠져있어요. 무슨 장르인지는 모르겠지만 이 가수에 한참 빠져있는 중이죠. 한번 빠지면 질릴때까지 듣는 편입니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Cooking. 요리

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I will become a kindergarten teacher because I like children. Maybe there, too, I drew pictures for children and kept making something with my hands. 아이들을 좋아해서 아마 유치원 선생님이 되었을거예요. 하지만 아마 그곳에서도 아이들에게 그림을 그려주고 계속 손으로 무언가를 만들었을 것 같아요.
