1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, my name is JungHyeon Kwon. I was raised up in Korea and came to San Francisco to study Arts when I was 20. I had studied for 6 years there, and lived in New York for 3 years, and am currently working as a graphics designer during the day and as a freelancer illustrator during the night in LA. 1. 당신의 이야기를 들려주세요. 어디서 왔나요? 안녕하세요, 권정현이라고 합니다. 전 한국에서 자라서 20살에 미술을 공부하기위해 샌프란시스코로 와서 6년, 뉴욕에서 3년을 살다 현재는 로스앤젤레스에서 낮에는 그래픽디자이너로 일하고 밤에는 프리랜서로 일러스트를 그리고 있습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I utilize light, shadow, restricted color palette, and interior and construction perspective in my drawings. I enjoy illustrating current, multi-faceted life styles happening in many places. The theme of my drawing is myself and the life of audience who appreciate my drawings. 2. 당신의 미학에 대해서 들려주세요. 빛과 그림자, 한정적인 컬러팔레트, 인테리어와 건축의 투시를 이용한 그림을 그리고 있습니다. 다양한 공간에서 벌어지는 현재의 다양한 삶을 그림에 담는걸 좋아합니다. 그래서 제그림의 주체는 저이자 제 그림을 보는 관객의 삶을 표현하고있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I frequently use Photoshop. Compared to other tools, modification is easier and I can express desired ambience with various effects. 3. 당신이 가장 좋아하는 작업 툴은 무엇인가요? 이유는요? 주로 포토샵을 많이 사용하고 있습니다. 다른 툴과는 다르게 수정이 쉽고 다양한효과들도 원하는 분위기를 표현할수있습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Owing to my education, the key of my artistic process is finding the reference picture. Once I have an idea, I sketch the composition minutely and find all the related references to start off the whole process. 4.당신의 예술적 창작과정은 어떻게 되나요? 학교에서 배운대로 저의 창작과정의 대부분의 과정은 레퍼런스 사진을 찾는게 중점입니다. 일단 아이디어가 떠오르면 작게 구도를 스케치하고 그거에 관한 모든 레퍼런스을 찾은 후에 작업을 시작합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Everyday life gives me inspirations. From flowers and trees to lives of people around me, I observe and analyze tiny pieces around me and express them in my drawings. 5. 어떤 것들이 당신의 작업에 영감을 주나요? 하루 하루 삶의 일상들에서 영감을 받습니다. 길가를 걷다 보는 꽃, 나무 부터 제 주변사람들의 일상까지 작고 소소한 부분들을 보면서 그걸 제 나름대로의 해석으로 그림에 표현하려고합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I can’t imagine my life without art. Expressing diverse aspects of life in my drawings is my own expedition and vacation from everyday life. Art has allowed me to view even trivial things in the world from different perspectives. 6. 예술이 당신의 삶에서 어떤 역활을 하나요? 그리고 당신이 세상을 보는 관점에 어떤 변화를 주나요? 제 인생에서 예술이 없는 삶은 생각이 안되네요. 다양한 삶의 모습들을 그림으로 표현함으로써 소소한 제 일상에서의 탈출구이자 늘 새로운 모험을 하는거 같습니다. 그리고, 예술이 있음으로서 예전에는 그냥 지나칠수있는 작은것들도 다양한 관점으로 보려고 노력하는 점이 제일 큰 변화인것 같네요~

7. Where did you study?

I majored in illustration at Academy of Art University in San Francisco. 7. 어디서 공부했나요? 샌프란시스코에 있는 Academy of Art university에서 일러스트레이션을 전공하였습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

In five years, I will be drawing while nurturing my own child. This can be too realistic, but perhaps I will be at home to do them in parallel. 8. 5년후의 당신은 어떤 모습일거라 생각하나요? 에이전시에서 일하고 있을까요? 5년후에 제 모습은 아기를 키우면서 그림을 그리고 있을거 같습니다. 너무 현실적인 대답인것같지만, 집에서 육아와 그림을 병행하고 있지않을까요?

9. What about in ten?

I aspire to publish my drawing collection. I also want to teach students. 9. 10년후에는요? 10년후에는 제가 그린 그림들을 모아 그림책을 내고싶네요. 그리고 학생들을 가르치고싶습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

My drawings reflect everyday life. I will be happy to see someone who can empathize with my drawings. People’s empathy will stimulate me to endeavor harder in drawing. 10. 당신의 예술로 무언가를 얻고싶은가요? 제 그림은 지극히 평범한 일상들의 모습이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 누군가가 제그림을 보고 공감을 느낀다면 그것만으로도 좋을거같네요. 그런 공감대들이 저에게 더 열심히 그림을 그리게 하는 자극제가 될거같아요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I indulge in Macaron with Americano! 11. 우리에게 당신의 이야기를 조금 들려주세요. 당신이 가장좋아하는 음식은 무엇인가요? 마카롱과 함께 먹는 아메리카노!

12. Favourite book?

I like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. 12.제일 좋아하는 책은요? 해리포터와 반지의 제왕을 좋아합니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I don’t have a favorite genre of music, but I usually listen to female Korean singers. 13.제일 좋아하는 음악은요? 특별히 선호하는 음악장르는 없지만 작업할때 주로듣는 노래는 한국 여성싱어들 노래를 많이 듣습니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

I enjoy reading fairy tales and drawing. 14.취미는 무엇인가요? 동화책읽기 와 그림그리기입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I probably would've assisted my parents, who work in stone and marble. 15. 만약 당신이 아티스트가 되지않았다면 어떤일을 했을까요? 저희 부모님이 돌과 관련된 일을 하시는데 아마 부모님의 일을 하지않았을까 싶네요.
