1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

My name is Jung Ka-yong. I was born and raised in Seoul. Originally, I majored in fine art, mostly painting and installation art. I had a chance to stay in LA for a while, three years ago with my husband. Since my husband works as a concept artist, he knows a lot about digital painting. One day, he recommended that I draw on the iPad since I had a hard time painting traditionally. I started uploading my sketches on Instagram and then slowly developed my style since then.

제 이름은 정가용이고, 서울에서 나고 자랐습니다. 원래 저는 순수미술을 전공하고, 페인팅과 설치미술을 했습니다. 그러다 3년전 남편과 함께 잠시 미국에 머물게 되었습니다. 타지에 머물면서 트레디셔널 그림을 그리는데 어려움을 겪고 있을 때, 디지털 페인트를 하는 컨셉아티스트인 남편의 권유로 처음 아이패드로 그림을 그리기 시작했습니다. 처음엔 취미로 그린 그림을 꾸준히 인스타그램에 올리면서  현재의 그림을 그리게 되었습니다. 

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I love colors! I like the intensity and the power that comes from bright, clear colors. Also, I like to cause curiosity and tension in my paintings. I draw a story that cannot be defined through the mixture of loveliness and bizarreness, humor and mystery, ambivalence and ambiguous atmosphere.  

밝고 명료한 칼라에서 오는 강렬함을 좋아합니다. 또한, 내 그림엔 늘 궁금증과 긴장감을 집어넣습니다. 사랑스러움과 기괴함, 유머러스함과 미스테리, 어떤 이중적이거나 애매모한 분위기를 통해 정의내릴 수 없는 이야기를 그립니다. 

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I usually paint on my iPad. I like the clarity and simplicity which can be expressed in digital and the fact that you can feel the colors more vividly. Moreover, you can directly draw and save wherever and whenever you are inspired in digital.  So, it is easier to focus and more comfortable to modify. 

저는 주로 아이패드를 이용한 디지털 페인팅을 합니다. 디지털에서 느낄 수 있는 명료함과 단순함을 좋아하고 칼라를 더 생생하게 느낄 수 있다는 점이 좋습니다. 또한, 영감을 받자마자 직관적으로 그릴 수 있고 파일로 저장하고 쉽게 수정할 수 있다는 점이 매우 매력적입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Firstly, I think of the story I want to tell. Setting the overall situation and space, I make the role and story of the character. Sometimes, I just choose one color and draw a story with it. When I can't think of inspiration, I look up my favorite books and movies over and over again, and think about what emotions I pursue. 

말하고 싶은 이야기를 먼저 생각합니다. 전체적인 상황과 공간을 설정하고, 그 안의 인물의 역할과 이야기를 집어 넣습니다. 가끔은 하나의 칼라를 고른 후 정해진 칼라를 가지고 이야기를 만들기도 합니다. 도저히 영감이 떠오르지 않을 땐 좋아하는 책과 영화를 다시 반복해서 찾아보면서 내가 추구하는 감성이 무엇인지부터 다시 생각해봅니다. 

5. Who and/or what inspires your work? 

Children’s books are always the biggest influence on me. Even though my paintings are not for children, I like to add the feel of them in my paintings. Still keeping the books I read when I was a child, I often read them these days.

동화책에서 많은 영감을 받습니다. 아이들을 위한 그림을 그리지 않지만 동화적 감성을 좋아합니다. 어릴 적부터 봐왔던 많은 동화책들을 계속해서 보관하고 열어보면서 영감을 얻곤 합니다. 

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Painting gives me satisfaction in my life and allows me to prove my value continuously. I look at the world more interestingly because all the various experiences can be sources of my paintings. 

그림을 그리는 일은 내 삶의 만족감과  나의 가치를 계속해서 증명할 수 있게 해줍니다. 예술을 함으로써 살면서 겪는 다양한 경험들이 모두 내 그림의 소스가 될 수 있기에 세상을 더욱 흥미롭게 바라보게 됩니다. 

7. Where did you study?

I studied fine art at Korea National University of Arts. 

한국종합예술학교에서 조형예술과를 전공했습니다.  

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Thinking I am still at an early stage, I don’t expect it will always be great. There will be lots of mistakes and changes within the next five years. However, one thing I hope to accomplish, for the most, is to publish my picture book within five years.

아직 출발선에 있는 이 시간동안 많은 시행착오와 변화가 일어날 것 같습니다. 하지만 5년이란 시간동안 반드시 이루고자 하는 한가지는 제가 그려온 그림들과 새로운 이야기들로 나의 그림책을 출판하는 일입니다.

9. What about in ten?

I have dreamed of working on various media as well as painting when I reach the next stage in the current painting. After 10 years, I think I may implement my paintings into 3D or make a small toy with my characters. 

현재의 그림에서 좀 더 다음 단계에 다다를 때 그림 뿐만 아니라 다양한 매체를 이용한 작업들을 하는 것을 꿈꿔왔습니다. 10년이라는 시간이 지나면 내 그림을 3d로 구현하거나 나의 캐릭터들로 작은 장난감을 만들어 출시하지 않을까 싶습니다. 

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to create my original story. I hope to paint happily even when I get old without stopping. 

나만의 이야기를 구현하고 싶습니다. 멈추지 않고 늙어서도 계속 즐겁게 작품을 할 수 있길 바랍니다. 

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Every kind of noodle dish is always welcomed to me. Especially, Korean instant noodles are my favorite. Even if they may not be good for my health, I can't completely stop eating them, lol. 

모든 종류의 면요리를 좋아하고 즐깁니다. 특히, 그중 한국의 인스턴트 라면을 좋아합니다. 몸에 좋지 않다는 걸 알지만, 라면을 먹는 걸 멈출 수 없고 주기적으로 먹어줘야 합니다.^^

12. Favourite book?

Alice in Wonderland by Louis Carroll. His story is fantastic and still inspires many people constantly in their works of art. 

루이스 캐롤의 이상한 나라의 앨리스. 그의 이야기는 환상적이고 아직도 많은 사람들과 그들의 예술작품에 끊임없이 영감을 줍니다.  

13. Favourite genre of music? 

I like classical carols and old jazz. These songs make my heart pound. Recently, I started listening to Hawaiian music when I was working. The beautiful melody gives me peace of mind and refreshes my mood. 

나는 클래식 캐롤과 올드 재즈를 좋아합니다. 이 음악들은 내 마음을 두근거리게 만듭니다. 근래에는 주로 작업할때  화와이안 음악을 듣기 시작했습니다. 특유의 아름다운 선율은 마음의 안정을 주면서 기분을 상쾌하게 해줍니다. 

14. What are your hobbies? 

My hobbies are playing video games and watching movies with my husband. I also study interior design sometimes. 

나의 취미는 남편과 함께 비디오 게임을 즐기고 영화를 보는 것입니다. 그리고 틈날때마다 인테리어에 대해 공부합니다. 

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

If I were not an illustrator, I would have had a job related to interior design or architecture. My father and older brother have been gratefully influencing me with their jobs as an architect and  an interior designer. Even now, I pay a lot of attention to the interior of my house and sometimes make props for the interior myself. 

아마 인테리어나 건축과 관련된 직업을 가졌을 것입니다. 저의 아버지는 건축사이시고, 오빠 또한 건축과 인테리어를 하기 때문에 많은 영향을 받으면서 자라왔습니다. 현재도 저는 제가 사는 집의 인테리어에 많은 관심을 쏟고 인테리어 소품을 직접 만들기도 합니다.
