1. What's your story? Where are you from?

My name is Laura Ralli and I come from Arezzo, in Tuscany, Italy. I worked as a graphic designer but now I'm a freelance illustrator and sculptor. Mi chiamo Laura Ralli e sono di Arezzo, in Toscana, Italia. Io ho lavorato come graphic designer, ma ora sono illustratrice e scultrice freelance.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I love drawing and reinterpreting stories for children. I love bright colors and sometimes create surreal and dreamy environments. Io amo disegnare e reinterpretare racconti per bambini. Amo i colori accesi e talvolta creare ambienti surreali e onirici.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I use classical and digital techniques and sometimes I mix them because I love to create and to experiment. I use photoshop, watercolor, pastel, acrylic. Io utilizzo tecniche classiche e digitali e qualche volta le mescolo perché amo creare e sperimentare. Io uso il programma photoshop, acquerello, pastello, acrilico.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I am a curious person, I study, I read, I watch many movies or I listen to music. When I do these things I get an idea for a design or project, I sketch and slowly I define the composition of the image and the colors. Io sono una persona curiosa, studio, leggo e guardo molti film o ascolto musica. Quando faccio queste cose mi viene un’idea per un disegno o un progetto, faccio uno schizzo e pian piano definisco la composizione dell’ immagine e i colori.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I'm inspired by the comic book Moebius, Murakami Haruki's books, the 80s and 90s movies, Terry Gilliam's movies and special people I see on the street. Io sono ispirata dal fumettista Moebius, dai libri di Murakami Haruki, dai film anni ’80- ’90, dai film di Terry Gilliam e da persone particolari che vedo per strada.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I do not know if art has a role in life or simply it is life. I think a person with artistic sensibility sees the world more magical and sometimes more scary, like a child. Io non so se l’ arte ha un ruolo nella vita o semplicemente essa è la vita. Io penso che una persona con sensibilità artistica vede il mondo più magico e a volte più spaventoso, come un bambino.

7. Where did you study?

I studied sculpture, graphics, character design, illustration in Florence, Bologna and Macerata, Italy. Io ho studiato scultura, grafica, character design, illustrazione a Firenze, Bologna e Macerata, in Italia.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

I see myself as a freelance illustrator, a character designer for animation films and a teacher. Io vedo me stessa come un’illustratrice freelence, una character designer per film di animazione e un’insegnante.

9. What about in ten?

I have chosen a freelance job to travel around the world, learn about countries and cultures Io ho scelto un lavoro freelance per poter viaggiare per tutto il mondo, conoscere Paesi e culture.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to make people dream, entertain and laugh Io voglio far sognare, intrattenere e divertire le persone.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I love pasta with carbonara, shrimp, salami and cheese from Tuscany. Io amo pasta alla carbonara, gamberi, salumi e formaggi della Toscana.

12. Favourite book?

I love all the books written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Dave Mckean. Io amo tutti i libri scritti da Neil Gaiman e illustrati da Dave Mckean.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Blues, Jazz and trip hop like Morcheeba. Blues, Jazz, trip hop come i Morcheeba.

14. What are your hobbies?

I watch many TV series, I love walking in nature, swimming, listening to music. Io guardo molte serie tv, io amo camminare nella natura, nuotare, ascoltare musica.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Surely an astronaut or a pilot, to see the world from many different perspectives. Sicuramente un astronauta o un pilota, per vedere il mondo da molte differenti prospettive.
