Now I am mainly working as an embroidery craft designer, but embroidery craft was once my hobby. I have been fond of making crafts since I was young. I majored in art at university, and later, when I was working as a visual merchandiser, I made my decorative items by myself and used them on my work as needed. And naturally, it was connected to the path of an embroidery artist. I think Korea, where I was born and raised, is the most modern and fashionable place among countries with oriental beauty. Each of my works seems to blend in with this Korean sentiment to create my color. ![]() 2. Tell us about your aesthetic.Sometimes, I find unexpected emotions and beauty when I united the opposite concepts into one. I use French embroidery techniques, but I also enjoy using oriental images and motifs, and I enjoy creating object by mixing different materials. Also, I tend to express myself inspired by natural objects. I think that artificial works can never follow the beauty of nature. Nature is my absolute muse. 3. What is your favourite medium and why?I indeed enjoy using a variety of materials that are rarely used in classical embroidery methods. But if you ask what I like the most, I can surely answer that it is white linen fabric and white threads.Because of the charm of purity, and only when you take a close look at the works made of this combination can you discover the beauty of fine differences. Looking closely at work plays a significant role in narrowing the distance between the artist and the audience. 4. What is your artistic process like?To my knowledge, most of the artists are starting with searching the inspirational image first. However, I imagine specific spaces and scenes that my artwork will place unlike others. And then, I specify the shape of my work. I always feel this procedure the same as focusing before taking a photo or as removing the accumulated dust. As closer to the final scene, I can come up with a material that fits to what I want to show, and draw a design and simulate it with graphic program. Finally I can start actual embroidery. 5. Who and/or what inspires your work?I am inspired by scenes and landscapes during taking a walk rather than specific objects. Through walking I collect and absorb several elements of the senses such as seeing, hearing, smelling, and etc. They become a pleasing image and serve as a great inspiration and power to my artwork. 6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?To me, art is like healing through meditation. Time for the embroidery is an opportunity to think deeper about my philosophy and complicated feelings. I can focus on deep inside myself during the work, and through focusing time, I can organize my untidy thoughts. Absorbing organized ideas, I also can get myself better, and I can understand others and the world. ![]() 7. What do you hope to achieve with your art?I wish I could be a positive influence to others in some way. During embroidering I could be consoled myself. I have filled the deficiencies in reality through the work of someone else's embroidery. I want to be a person who comforts someone who meet my embroidery. I wanna give them comfort in their sadness, fun in boredom, and stability in anxiety. So I usually listen to jazz or listen to quiet and drowsy music with guitar accompaniment. My favorite is the album of Janet Seidel, who is a Jazz artist who visited Japan a few years ago, and the album of Gontiti, who is an acoustic guitar duo. I listened to their albums countless times.
