1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi! My name is Mariana González Roldán. I was born in Hidalgo, Mexico. Since I was a little girl, I have liked to draw. I thought that drawings were an extension of me that could live longer. As I grew up, drawing became the language for what I couldn't find words for. Today, it is my work and also a way to read myself and understand what is going on inside me.

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Mariana González Roldán. Nací Hidalgo, México. Desde que era una niña me ha gustado dibujar, pensaba que los dibujos eran una extensión de mí que podía vivir mas tiempo; al crecer, dibujar se convirtió en el lenguaje para lo que no encontraba palabra; hoy es mi trabajo y también una forma de leerme y entender que sucede dentro de mi.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

At first, I was looking to make proportionate characters and landscapes that were close to reality, but after many failed attempts, I realized that each project was a struggle to achieve a certain technique and I was forgetting to enjoy the process. In the end, I decided to leave that way and look for my style from what really made me happy; I had to rethink: what materials do I feel comfortable working with, what shapes am I able to make today, what do I want to say with my drawings. So I began to create my world, with stains, wobbly lines, geometric shapes, and my markers that had been abandoned since high school. In the process, I have added other materials, and new forms that I am now able to make, but the important thing is not to forget to have fun.

En un principio buscaba hacer personajes proporcionados y paisajes que se acercaran a la realidad, pero después de muchos intentos fallidos, me di cuenta que cada proyecto era una lucha por lograr cierta técnica y estaba olvidado disfrutar el proceso. Al final decidí abandonar ese camino y buscar mi estilo desde lo que realmente me hacia feliz; tuve que replantearme ¿con qué materiales me siento cómoda para trabajar?, ¿qué formas soy capaz de hacer hoy?, ¿qué quiero decir yo con mis dibujos? Así comencé a crear mi mundo, con manchas, líneas tambaleantes, formas geométricas, y mis plumones de agua que ya estaban abandonados desde la secundaría. En el proceso han sumado otros materiales, nuevas formas que ahora soy capaz de hacer, pero lo lo importante es no olvidar pasarla bien.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Markers are my favorite material, they are very easy to use and have very saturated tones; I also like working with watercolors, you never know what is going to happen, the colors mix, the water drips, everything happens and generates many unexpected textures; I use colored pencils to make shadows, very thin lines or to make scratches. During my process, everything is chaos, it's a time to experiment, sometimes there are mistakes that you are grateful for or some that you regret, that's why I always end up retouching or adjusting in digital (photoshop or procreate).

Los plumones de agua son mi material favorito, son muy fáciles de utilizar y tienen tonos muy saturados; también me gusta trabajar con acuarelas, nunca sabes que va a pasar, las manchas se mezclan, el agua se escurre, sucede de todo y genera muchas texturas inesperadas; los lápices de colores lo utilizo para dar sombras, líneas muy delgadas o hacer rayones. Durante mi proceso, todo es un caos, es un momento de experimentar, aveces hay errores que agradeces o algunos de los que te arrepientes, por eso siempre termino retocando o ajustando en digital ya sea en photoshop o procreate.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I think that when images don't come from reason they are the ones that speak of what lives inside you, so most of the time before I start drawing I like to have a moment singing or dancing with my eyes closed, something that makes me let my head go. In general I don't have a specific methodology for my personal projects, but I do work constantly in my journal, there I write what I dream, what I learned during the day or what I heard in the street, many ideas of what I draw come from there.

Creo que cuando las imágenes no vienen de la razón son ellas las que te hablan de lo que habita dentro de ti, así que la mayoría de las veces antes de ponerme a dibujar me gusta tener un momento cantando o bailando con ojos cerrados, algo que me haga soltar la cabeza. En general no tengo una metodología específica para mis proyectos personales, pero sí trabajo constantemente en mi bitácora, ahí escribo lo que sueño, lo que aprendí en el día o lo que escuché en la calle, muchas ideas de lo que dibujo las tomo de ahí.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I am inspired by the body, movement, nature and the narratives with which we explain the world to ourselves. Some artists that inspire me are: Hilma Af Klint, Remedios Varo, Adolf Born and Yumi Sakagama.

Me inspira el cuerpo, el movimiento, la naturaleza y las historias con las que nos explicamos el mundo. Algun@s artistas que me inspiran son: Hilma Af Klint, Remedios Varo, Adolf Born y Yumi Sakagama.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Drawing is like taking a picture of my inner world, each stroke, color or shape always says something about us unconsciously, it is in my drawings where I can generate a dialogue with myself.

I believe that we all in our own way have the responsibility to tell the story of the place we inhabit, I don't mean where we live, but our unique and different perspective from which we perceive the world.

Dibujar es como tomar una foto de mi mundo interior, cada trazo, color o forma siempre dice algo de nosotros de manera inconsciente, es en mis dibujos donde realmente puedo conocerme y generar un dialogo conmigo misma.

Creo que todos a nuestra manera tenemos la responsabilidad de contar la historia del lugar que habitamos, no me refiero en donde vivimos, sino de nuestra perspectiva única y diferente con la que percibimos el mundo.

7. Where did you study?

I studied graphic design at Universidad La Salle Pachuca and after graduating I took a diploma in Narrative Illustration at the Faculty of Art and Design at UNAM.

Estudié diseño gráfico en la Universidad La Salle Pachuca y al terminar cursé el Diplomado de ilustración Narrativa en la Facultad de arte y diseño en la UNAM.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would like to learn theatre and paint in large format my own illustrations.

Me gustaría aprender teatro, poder hacer un split y pintar en gran formato.

9. What about in ten?

I would like to write a book and collaborate designing the scenography of a performance

Para ese entonces espero ver una aurora boreal, escribir un libro en una cabaña en medio del bosque y colaborar haciendo la escenografía de algún performance.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I would like my illustrations to be able to connect with other people, provoking in them a sense of freedom, joy and admiration for nature.

Me gustaría que mis ilustraciones sean capaces de hacer reír, emocionar o alegrar el día a otros.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I think it depends on the season, but I would never say no to a plate of chilaquiles, pasta, pineapple ice cream or chocolate cookies.

Creo que van cambiando mis gustos dependiendo la temporada, pero nunca le diría que no a un plato de chilaquiles, pasta, un halado de piña o galletas de chocolate.

12. Favourite book?

One of the books that most changed my perception of the world was "The man who mistook his wife for a hat" by Oliver Sacks.

Quizás uno de los libros que más cambió mi percepción del mundo ha sido “ The man who mistook his wife for a hat” de Oliver Sacks.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I don't have a favorite genre or artist, but I constantly listen to Katebush, Olöf Arnalds, Jain, Agnes Obel and Florence +the machine.

No tengo un genero o artista favorito. Cada año inicio una carpeta con las canciones que me gustaron y que se quedaron pegadas, ya sea que las haya escuchado en la calle o de manera aleatoria en youtube, así que cuando quiero recordar como se sentía ese año, reproduzco esa carpeta, es como un diario musical.

14. What are your hobbies?

I love dancing, painting, walking in the street with my backpack on my back, collecting banal questions and inventing answers to them.

Me gusta mucho bailar caminar en la calle con mi mochila en la espalda, coleccionar preguntas e inventarles alguna respuesta y obviamente dibujar.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Before starting I thought about studying environmental engineering, biology or mathematics; these were my options because I did not believe that my hobby could also be my job, at the last moment I learned about the existence of the graphic design career and I entered without knowing exactly what it was, I do not regret it at all, every class excited me a lot, I was very lucky. Maybe today I would like to study philosophy, I think it would contribute a lot to my work.

Antes de comenzar la carrera de diseño pensaba estudiar Ingeniería ambiental, psicología, biología o administración de empresas; eran mis opciones porque no creía que mi hobbie pudiera ser también mi trabajo, en el ultimo momento supe de la existencia de la carrera de diseño gráfico y entré sin saber con exactitud que era, no me arrepiento para nada, cada clase me emocionaba mucho, tuve mucha suerte.
