1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I’m Min Joo Park (mimong). I’m from South Korea and majored in industrial design. Now I’m an illustrator and designer as a freelancer. 안녕하세요, 저는 박민주입니다. 그림을 그릴 때는 mimong이라는 이름을 사용해요. 한국에서 태어나 자랐고, 대학에서는 산업디자인을 전공했습니다. 현재는 프리렌서 일러스트레이터, 디자이너로 활동 중이에요.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I prefer drawing pictures of daily life or fantasy moments. I try to express something simple and beautiful. 일상 또는 머리 속 공상의 순간을 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다. 단순하며 아름다운 것을 표현하려고 노력해요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I prefer digital work. I like the textures and effects of digital work. Unlike hand-working tasks, it also makes color, size and location easy during the job. 저는 주로 디지털작업을 해요. 디지털 작업 특유의 질감과 효과를 좋아하고, 수작업과는 다르게 작업 도중 색이나, 크기, 위치의 변형이 수월하다는 장점이 있기 때문이죠.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I usually carry small notes and sketch with a pen or pencil. And I work digitally on my sketch. When I work on it, I focus on the harmony of colors, the simplification of what I want to express. 평소 작은 노트를 가지고 다니며, 붓펜이나 연필로 스케치를 해요. 그리고 그 중 맘에 드는 것을 디지털로 작업합니다. 작업을 할 때는 색의 조화, 표현하고자 하는 것의 단순화에 집중합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I usually get inspiration from my daily life. I like to remember various things in my head, such as feelings and impressive scenery and to express them later in painting. 저는 주로 일상에서 영감을 얻어요. 일상에서 느꼈던 감정, 인상깊었던 풍경 등 머릿속에 있는 다양한 것들을 기억해두었다가, 나중에 그림을 통해 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art makes my life much easier. It gives me the power to focus on the moment slowly. For example, it makes me feel happy with the cold air when I leave home in the morning, the scenery around me, the busy pace of people. 예술은 제 삶을 여유롭게 해요. 순간 순간을 천천히 집중하여 바라볼 수 있게 해줘요. 예를 들면, 아침에 집을 나설 때 찬 공기와 그를 둘러싼 풍경, 사람들의 분주한 발걸음 등의 분위기에 행복을 느낄 수 있게 만들어줍니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in industrial design in college. After graduation, I used to work in industrial design but now I’m getting a master's in illustration at the school of design. I'm interested in picture books as well as illustrations. Learning is always fun. 저는 대학에서 산업디자인을 공부했습니다. 졸업 후, 산업 디자인 분야에서 일을 하다가, 현재는 대학원에서 일러스트레이션을 공부하고 있습니다. 일러스트레이션 뿐만 아니라 그림책도 관심있게 공부하고 있습니다. 배우는 것은 항상 재미있어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Obviously, I'll still be working on painting in five years. And I want to have a brand of goods, a variety of my drawings. 5년후에도 계속 그림과 관련된 일을 하고 있을 것 같습니다. 그리고 제 그림으로 이루어진 다양한 문구, 굿즈 브랜드를 운영하고 있기를 바랍니다.

9. What about in ten?

As I tell you before, I’d like to tell a good story to many people through my brand and picture books. The brand will be more public, and picture books will be a personal project with my personal ideas. 10년 후에는, 위에 언급했던 브랜드와 그림책을 통해 많은 사람들에게 좋은 이야기를 전달 할 수 있기를 바랍니다. 브랜드는 좀 더 공적으로, 그림책은 제 개인적인 생각을 풀 수 있는 개인적인 프로젝트로 진행 될 것 같습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I strongly hope my work will be used in many different places. I want my work to exist even in a small space in people's lives. And I want to give people happiness through my work. 제 그림이 다양한 곳에 활용되었으면 좋겠어요. 일상 속 사소한 공간까지 제 작품이 존재하기를 바라요. 그리고 제 작품을 통해서 사람들에게 행복을 주고 싶습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like spicy tteokbokki, chocolate cake and coffee. 매운 떡볶이, 초콜릿 케이크, 커피를 좋아합니다.

12. Favourite book?

My favorite author, books, always changing. One of the most impressive books I read recently were ' Summer Outside ' and ' Each fight makes me invisible’. 가장 좋아하는 작가, 책은 항상 바뀌어요. 최근 읽었던 책 중 인상깊었던 책은 ‘바깥은 여름’, ‘싸울때마다 투명해진다’입니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

My favorite genres are jazz, Electronica, and folk-rock. Recently, I enjoy listening to the songs of honne, king of convenience. 재즈, 일렉트로니카, 포크락등의 장르를 가장 좋아합니다. 최근에는 honne, king of convenience의 노래를 무한반복 중이에요.

14. What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are swimming, reading books and taking a walk with my pet dog, Mongsili. 새벽 수영, 책 읽기, 반려 견 몽실이와의 저녁 산책이 취미입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I think I will be working on art anyway. Writing or do something that helps artists, whatever :) 글을 쓰거나, 예술가들에게 도움을 주는 일을 할 것 같아요. 어떤 방식이던지 예술과 관련된 일을 하고 있을 것 같아요.
