1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello? I am Zia Jung, who is working as an illustrator in Korea. I am drawing with the artist's name 'MintSummer'.

After majoring in Visual Communication Design at University, I worked as a motion graphic designer for quite some time and now I am working as a freelance illustrator.

I liked the motion graphics work that gave movement with technical techniques, but I listened to the inner voice of wanting to focus more on my own painting world.

So I decided to become a freelance illustrator. Drawings have been steadily drawn since childhood, and life without pictures is hard to imagine.

안녕하세요? 저는 대한민국에서 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있는 정지아입니다. ‘민트썸머’라는 작가명을 가지고 그림을 그리고 있습니다.

미술 대학에서 시각디자인을 전공한 후,  꽤 오랜 시간동안  모션그래픽 디자이너로 일했고 현재는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 일하고 있습니다. 

테크니컬한 기술로 움직임을 주는 모션그래픽 작업들도 좋았지만, 나만의 그림 세계에 더 집중하고 싶은 내면의 소리에 귀를 기울이게 되었습니다.

그래서 프리랜서 일러스트레이터가 되기로 결심했습니다. 그림은 어린 시절부터 꾸준히 그려왔고, 그림이 없는 삶은 상상하기 힘듭니다. 

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Inspired by nature and everyday life, the focus is on a variety of beautiful color combinations, textures, and layouts.

자연과 일상에서 영감을 받아서 다양하고 아름다운 색감의 조합과 질감, 레이아웃에 포커스를 맞추고 그리고 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I prefer digital work. This is because you can mix brushes and textures, and you can freely modify colors and shapes and experiment in real time while working. For these reasons, I think it's very practical for clients that need to be able to deliver high quality results on time. But sometimes I miss something analog, so I do it manually when I have time. Certainly, there is fun and excitement that is different from digital work.

디지털 작업을 선호합니다.  브러시와 질감을 혼합할 수 있고, 작업 중 실시간으로 자유롭게 색감과 형태를 수정하고 다양한 실험이 가능하기 때문입니다. 이러한 이유들 때문에, 기한내에 고퀄리티의 결과물을 도출할 수 있어야 하는 클라이언트 작업에서 매우 실용적이라고 생각합니다. 하지만 때때로 아날로그 적인 것이 그리워서 시간이 여유로울 때는 수작업을 하기도 합니다. 확실히 디지털 작업과는 다른 재미와 감동이 존재합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Both personal work and commercial work with clients start with an idea sketch. Sometimes I draw with paper and pencil, and I sketch in Procreate. Various images that were collected in advance are helpful for ideas. If you are satisfied with the idea, I paint and finish in Photoshop or ProCreate.

개인 작업과 클라이언트가 있는 상업적인 작업 모두 아이디어 스케치로 시작합니다. 종이와 연필로 그릴 때도 있고, 프로크리에이트에서 스케치 하기도 합니다. 평소에 미리 자료 수집을 했던 다양한 이미지가 아이디어에 도움이 되기도 합니다. 아이디어가 만족스럽다면 포토샵이나 프로크리에이트를 통해 채색을 하고 마무리합니다. 

5. Who and/or what inspires your work? 

In fact, artists think that everything they see and hear is affected. So I try to have as many experiences as possible even in my busy daily life.

I am most inspired by travel and nature. I like to care for and observe a variety of plants, and I love animals. So, it appears as a material in my work. I am also deeply inspired by new stimuli (scenery, people, food culture, etc.) from my travel destination.

Through social media, I can easily access and influence the works of many artists around the world.

Going to the exhibition is also helpful. Seeing the works of other cool artists in real life, not on the Internet or in books, is a big resonant in my heart. In fact, when I went to the exhibition hall to appreciate, I was really impressed and surprised by Henri Rousseau's “The Snake Shaman." I saw it when the 'Orsay Museum' works were invited to Korea, and the wild and exotic... primitive… I was choked by the overwhelming atmosphere that could not be explained in words, so I kept looking at it for 40 minutes (I think I would have appreciated it more if I had time). If I visit France, I definitely want to see you again.

In addition to this, I like Henri Matisse, Edgar Degas, David Hockney, Dahlov Ipcar, and Emily Sutton.

사실 예술가들은 보고 듣는 모든 것에서 영향을 받는다고 생각합니다. 그래서 바쁜 일상 속에서도 되도록 많은 경험을 하려고 노력합니다. 

저는 여행과 자연에서 가장 많은 영감을 받습니다. 다양한 식물들을 가꾸고 관찰하는 것을 좋아하고, 동물들을 사랑합니다. 그래서 제 작업에도 많이 소재로 등장합니다. 또한 일상을 떠난 여행지에서의 새로운 자극들(풍경, 사람들, 식문화 등)에 깊은 영감을 받습니다.

SNS를 통해서도 세계의 많은 예술가들의 작품들을 쉽게 접할 수 있고 영향을 받기도 합니다. 

전시회에 가는 것도 도움이 됩니다. 다른 멋진 예술가들의 작품들을 인터넷이나 책이 아니라 실제로 접하는 것은 가슴에 큰 울림으로 다가옵니다. 실제로 전시관에 가서 감상하며 정말 감명 받고 깜짝 놀랐던 작품은 앙리 루소의 ‘뱀을 부리는 주술사’ 입니다. 한국에 ‘오르세 미술관’ 작품들이 초청되어 왔을 때 보게 되었었는데, 그 야생적이고 이국적인..원초적인…뭔가 말로 설명할 수 없는 압도적인 분위기에 숨이 막혀서 40분간(-시간의 여유가 있었다면 더 감상했을 수도 있었을 것 같아요.) 계속 바라 봤던 작품입니다.  프랑스에 방문 하게 된다면 꼭 한번 다시 보고 싶습니다.  

이 외에도 앙리 마티스, 에드가 드가, 데이비드 호크니, 달로브 이프카, 에밀리 서튼을 좋아합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art makes not only me but our lives fragrant and beautiful. How many things in the world have no artistic elements added?

I am happy to be able to express my thoughts, feelings, and tastes with paintings, the way I can do it. I think artists have the ability to see 'special' even in small and ordinary things.

예술은 저뿐만 아니라 우리의 삶을 향기롭고 아름답게 해줍니다. 세상에 예술적 요소가 가미되지 않은 것들이 얼마나 있을까요? 

제가 할 수 있는 방식인 그림으로 제 생각과 감정, 취향을 표현할 수 있어서 기쁩니다. 예술가들은 작고 평범한 것에서도 ‘특별함’을 볼 수 있는 능력이 있다고 생각합니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in Visual Communication Design at Dankook University.

단국대학교에서 시각디자인을 전공했습니다. 

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I hope to open my studio and work on cool and fun projects with my pets. I wish I could live as an illustrator who achieves a good balance between work and life. If there is an opportunity, I would like to live in another country for a certain period of time, spend time on personal projects, and live a true “digital nomad” life.

제 스튜디오를 열고 애완 동물들과 함께 멋지고 재미있는 프로젝트들을 진행하길 바랍니다. 일과 삶의 균형을 잘 이루는 일러스트레이터로 살아갔으면 좋겠습니다. 기회가 생긴다면 다른 나라에 일정 기간 거주 하면서 개인 프로젝트에 시간을 할애하며 진정한 ‘디지털 노마드’의 삶을 살아보고 싶습니다. 

9. What about in ten?

I want to be a person who keeps drawing consistently. I want to live happily by doing the above-mentioned things in a space where nature can cultivate a house and a garden.

꾸준히 그림을 계속 그리는 사람이 되고 싶어요. 집과 정원을 가꿀 수 있는 자연이 함께 하는 공간에서 위에 언급한 일들을 하며 행복하게 살아가고 싶습니다. 

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to be an artist with good influence. I always think about what I can do to help the planet. So, I'm also working on a new project these days. I wish people could see my paintings and feel and act on something.

좋은 영향력을 끼치는 예술가가 되고 싶습니다. 지구를 위해 내가 무엇을 해야 도움이 될 수 있을지 항상 고민합니다. 그래서 요즘 새로운 프로젝트를 구상 중이기도 합니다. 사람들이 제 그림을 보고 무언가를 느끼고 행동할 수 있다면 좋겠어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

There are so many delicious food in the world that it is difficult to choose just one, but um… I love fruits and seafood dishes. Whenever I travel to other countries, I like to discover and enjoy new flavors. I have traveled to many countries such as Europe and Asia, but seafood-based food made with various ingredients that I had tasted on my trip to Thailand were very good. Of course, the tropical fruits were great too. Especially, I remember the moments of the joyful cooking class I experienced in Bangkok. I also remember the octopus and cod dishes I had in Greece and Spain.

세상에는 맛있는 음식들이 많아서 하나만 선택하기 어렵지만, 음… 저는 과일들과 해산물 요리들을 아주 좋아합니다.  다른나라들을 여행할 때 마다 새로운 맛을 찾아보고 즐기는 것을 좋아합니다. 유럽과 아시아 등 여러 국가들을 여행 했었지만, 태국 여행에서 맛보았던 다채로운 재료로 만들어진 해산물 기반의 음식들은 매우 훌륭했습니다. 물론 열대 과일들도 너무 좋았습니다. 특히 방콕에서 경험했던 즐거운 쿠킹 클래스의 순간이 떠오릅니다. 그리스와 스페인에서 맛보았던 문어와 대구 요리도 기억이 나네요.

12. Favourite book?

I like 'The Catcher in the Rye' and 'The Lord of the Flies'. I like the psychological description of the various inner aspects of human beings. The two classic novels are fun and interesting no matter how much you reread.

호밀밭의 파수꾼과 파리대왕을 좋아합니다. 인간이 가지고 있는 여러가지 내면들을 심리적으로 잘 묘사해서 좋아합니다. 두 가지의 명작 소설은 아무리 다시 읽어도 재밌고 흥미롭습니다.

13. Favourite genre of music? 

The music genres you listen to differ depending on your mood and situation. When it comes to genre, I like rock / electronic / bossa nova music.

기분과 상황에 따라 듣는 음악 장르들이 다릅니다. 굳이 장르를 말하자면, 락 / 일렉트로닉 / 보사노바 음악을 좋아합니다. 

14. What are your hobbies? 

Climbing, cycling, cooking, travel, watching movies, editing videos, studying animals and plants

등산, 자전거 타기, 요리, 여행, 영화 감상, 영상 편집,  동식물 공부

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I think I want to become a botanist, ornithologist, and a novelist. In particular, novelists are published as books, and I think it's wonderful to be able to produce movies or dramas later.

식물학자, 조류학자, 소설가가 되었을 것 같습니다. 특히 소설가는 책으로 출판이 되고, 나중에 영화나 드라마로 제작 될 수 있어서 멋진 것 같습니다.
