1. What's your story? Where are you from?

I live in Seoul, the capital city of Korea. It is a big, busy and dynamic city. I work at home where I live with my husband and daughter. 나는 대한민국 서울이라는 대도시에 살고 있다. 이곳은 복잡하고 바쁘지만 다이나믹한 도시다. 이곳에서 가족들과 함께 지내며 작업하고 있다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

People often say that they want to leave to somewhere far away from all the hassles of daily duties. I’m the same. Ever since I was little I’ve been dreaming of escaping from the reality and hide in a mysterious place. I shifted the idea into my work and I started to create the imaginary space on the canvas. I love to combine the images of common places and make a new scenery. Audiences may feel comfortable or unfamiliar from my work. I hope the feelings are refreshing, soothing and energizing. 하루하루 자신의 역할을 충실히 하며 살고 있지만 어딘가 허전함을 느끼거나 행복하지 않다고 생각할 때가 있다. 삶에서 지친 사람들은 모든걸 두고 떠나고 싶다는 생각이 들때도 있을 것이다. 나도 마찬가지였다. 내게 주어진 현실과 공간에서 벗어나고 싶다는 생각을 종종 했었고 그 생각을 작업으로 이어가면서 새로운 공간을 창조하게 되었다. 이 공간들은 어딘가에 있거나 혹은 있을법한 공간들의 조합으로 이루어졌다. 이 공간들에서 느끼는 편안함 혹은 낯선 감정들이 작품을 보는 사람들에게 어떠한 감정들을 불러일으키고 그 감정들이 그들의 삶을 살아가는데 힘이 되길 빈다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

The most important material in the current series of work is the thread. I create my own space using a variety of threads. I like to mix different types of threads for the texture. I feel very happy looking at all the colorful threads and beads. 현재 하고 있는 작업에서 가장 중요한 재료는 실이다. 다양한 재질의 실들을 이용해서 나만의 공간을 창조하는데 실의 질감에 따라 여러가지 표현들이 가능하다. 여러가지 색깔의 실들과 비즈들을 보고있으면 행복해진다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

My work requires a long time. Embroidery is slow and laborious. But after that, the value doubles. There are two main ways I work: to paint with acrylic and to use an embroidery technique. I select a suitable material according to the image. 나의 작업은 오랜 시간을 투자해야 한다. 자수는 느리고 손이 많이 가는 일이다. 하지만 그만큼 작업을 마치면 보람은 배가 된다. 작업에는 크게 두가지 방법을 이용하는데 아크릴로 페인팅 하는 부분이 있고 자수기법을 이용하는 부분이 있다. 이미지에 따라 어울리는 재료를 골라 이용한다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I like traveling. I get inspiration from new places, mostly nature and landscapes. I also collect images from magazines and Instagram. Then I crop suitable parts from them and mix altogether within my drawing to recreate the space in my work. 여행을 좋아한다. 낯선 자연 환경이나 풍경에서 영감을 얻는다. 또는 잡지나 인스타그램 등에서 원하는 이미지를 수집한다. 수집한 이미지들에서 작업에 적합한 장면들을 조합하고 공간을 재창조한다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Creative work is the most important thing in my life. There were few year I couldn’t work for personal reasons. Then I realize how important it is to me. I learn that I must to create things constantly to be happy. Nothing gives such a big pleasure as much as the moment of work. It is very important for me to reminisce my life, surroundings and society while I work. 작업은 내가 살아갈 수 있는 큰 힘이다. 개인적인 이유로 작업을 잠시 못하게 된 적이 있었다. 꾸준히 작품 활동을 하는 것이 나의 삶에서 얼마나 큰 비중을 차지하는지 깨닫게 된 순간이었고 작업을 하는 시간이 소중하다는 것을 알았다. 작업을 하며 나와 나의 주변, 사회를 한번 더 돌아볼 수 있는 시간을 갖고 삶을 환기시키는 것은 나에게 매우 중요한 일이다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in painting at Hongik University in Seoul, Korea, I received both BFA and MFA there. 대한민국 서울에 있는 홍익대학교에서 순수 회화를 전공했고 그곳에서 대학원 학위를 받았다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

5 years later, I wish for myself being very busy with many exhibitions. If I have a chance, I would like to run my own studio and open embroidery class. And it will be fun to do collaboration project with other artists. 5년 후에는 지금 하고 있는 작업으로 꾸준히 전시하고 있기를 바란다. 기회가 된다면 개인 작업실이나 공방을 만들어서 자수 클래스를 열어보고 싶다. 그리고 다른 작업을 하는 친구들과 콜라보레이션 작업도 해보고 싶다.

9. What about in ten?

After 10 years, my daughter will be 16 years old. I wish she will be proud of me. And I guess I will be stuck in my studio working just as same as now. 10년 후면 내 딸이 16살이 된다. 딸이 자랑스러워 할 수 있는 엄마가 되어있었으면 좋겠다. 그때도 작업은 계속 하고 있겠지.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to be outstanding in my field. I'll work hard and to make that happen. I hope my work can be spice of life to the audience. 나와같은 부류의 작업을 하는 사람들 사이에서 독보적인 존재가 되는것? 물론 더 열심히 작업하고 노력할 것이다. 나의 작업이 지친 삶을 살고 있는 누군가에게 활력소가 되길 바란다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like all kinds of food in the world as well as Korean food. I like Italian food, French, Thai, Vietnamese, Mexican, and so on. 한식은 물론이고 세계의 다양한 음식을 모두 좋아한다. 이탈리아 요리부터 프렌치, 태국, 베트남, 멕시코 등등 가리지않고 모두 잘먹는편이다.

12. Favourite book?

I like reading novels. I like fantasy or historical novels. But these days, I think I read more children's books thanks to my daughter. 소설을 즐겨 읽는 편이다. 판타지나 역사 배경의 소설을 좋아한다. 하지만 요즘은 딸 덕분에 동화책을 더 많이 읽는 것 같다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like quiet and delicate music such as jazz and bossa nova classics. Of course, sometimes I listen to K-pop. 재즈나 보사노바 클래식 같은 조용하고 섬세한 음악을 좋아한다. 물론 가끔은 k-pop도 듣는다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Movie. Especially, I like movies that are beautiful. The movie I saw most recently was ' Call Me By Your Name '. 영화. 특히 영상미가 아름다운 영화가 좋다. 가장 최근에 본 영화는 '콜미 바이 유어 네임'

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Archaeologist or historian. 고고학자나 역사학자
