1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello! My name is BaekYeon. I work as a freelance illustrator based in South Korea. I draw strange sceneries and odd fancies of my own. I think the happiest moment I have is when I draw and appreciate paintings. 안녕하세요. 저는 백연입니다. 한국에서 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있습니다. 낯선 장면과 저만의 이상한 상상들을 그리고 있습니다. 그림 그리는 순간과 그림을 감상하는 순간이 가장 행복합니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like drawing some strange and odd spaces. These spaces are the production of my imagination. I sketch my imaginary place and fill it with colors I like. I think it’s a pleasant thing to convey my fantasy in the form of paintings. I hope that each painting can be made into a short fairy tale (one-page fairy tale). 저는 낯설고 이상한 공간을 그리는 것을 좋아합니다. 그 공간은 저만의 상상이죠. 제 머릿속에서 그린 그 공간을 스케치하고, 그것을 제가 좋아하는 색감들로 채웁니다. 머릿속의 상상을 그림으로 전하는 것은 꽤 즐거운 일이라 생각합니다. 그것이 단 한 장으로 그려진 단편 동화로서(한 장짜리의 동화) 전달되었으면 하는 바람이 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like various mediums. I like to draw with colored pencils and watercolors as well as pencils, and my favorite medium is acrylic paints. Since I began to work in real earnest as an illustrator, I’ve worked on my pictures by sketching with a pencil and coloring them using digital tools. I’ve addressed the coloring method for my work to find out the best way to make the most of the feeling of a pencil drawing which I prefer. As a result, I usually sketch with pencils and then color it using Photoshop so that the feeling of the pencil sketch remains vivid. I’m currently thinking about ways to mix manual work and digital work in a harmonious manner. 저는 꽤 다양한 재료들을 좋아합니다. 연필 드로잉은 물론 색연필과 수채화 물감, 특히 아크릴 물감을 좋아합니다. 본격적으로 작업을 시작한 최근에는 연필로 스케치를 한 후, 디지털 작업을 통하여 채색하고 있습니다. 연필의 드로잉 질감을 좋아하기 때문에 그것을 최대한 살릴 수 있는 채색법에 대해 고민하였습니다. 때문에 연필로 스케치한 후, 포토샵을 활용하여 최대한 연필의 느낌을 살려 채색하게 되었습니다. 요즘은 수작업과 디지털 작업의 적절한 조화를 위해 고민하고 있습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I read my favorite books or watch movies. Sometimes I take pictures. I look up lots of reference materials. I like to watch many old and beautiful things. When an image pops up in my mind, and I make a small, rough sketch and then draw based on it. I draw with a pencil and color it on Photoshop. 좋아하는 책을 읽거나 영화를 봅니다. 사진을 찍기도 합니다. 많은 자료를 찾아봅니다. 오래되고 아름다운 물건들을 보는 것을 좋아합니다. 그리고 문득 떠오르는 이미지가 있으면 작게 스케치해 기록하고 그것을 토대로 그립니다. 연필로 스케치를 하고 포토샵으로 채색합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Recently, I’m searching for something that can inspire my work among those in nature. I guess my mother who loves flowers had an influence on me, so I like things like plants, the moon, night times and rainbows. I’m particularly fond of pictures that feature the moon. I think the moon is a good subject matter to express a ‘strange’ image. 최근에는 자연의 것들을 살펴보는 중입니다. 꽃을 사랑하시는 저희 어머니의 영향을 많이 받은 것 같아요. 식물들과 달, 구름, 하늘, 무지개 등의 소재들을 좋아합니다. 특히 달을 소재로 한 그림을 좋아합니다. 달은 ‘낯선’ 이미지를 표현하기에 적절한 소재라고 생각합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I’ve drawn pictures since I was a little child. Drawing pictures is a natural thing for me. Whenever I was asked about my dream, I always answered I want to become an ‘artist’. Whenever I come across something, I always think of how I can apply this in my drawings. 그림을 그리는 것은 어렸을 때부터 자연스럽게 쭉 해왔습니다. 꿈에 대해 질문을 받을 때면 저의 대답은 항상 ‘그림 그리는 사람’이었습니다. 항상 무엇이든 접할 땐 어떻게 그림에 활용할 수 있을지 생각하게 됩니다.

7. Where did you study?

I’ve majored in Visual Communication Design since my entering university. I completed the master’s course at Hongik University (Seoul, Korea) and I currently work as an illustrator. 저는 학부 시절부터 시각디자인을 전공하였습니다. 그리고 홍익대학교 대학원(한국, 서울)에서 석사를 마친 후, 작가 활동을 하고 있습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to complete my picture book and study my area of expertise in depth. Moreover, I would like to work in various fields and in various countries. 저만의 그림책 작업을 완성하고 더 깊게 공부하고 싶습니다. 또 다양한 분야와 다양한 나라에서 작업을 진행하고 싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

I want to become an artist who persistently draws pictures. I want to write, too. I want my paintings and writings to get together. My dream is to become prolific in painting and writing. 꾸준히 그림 작업을 하는 작가가 되고 싶습니다. 글도 쓰고 싶고요. 제 그림과 제 글이 함께 했으면 좋겠습니다. 다작하는 작가가 꿈입니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I’ve always been comforted by paintings and I wish my paintings can comfort others, either. I wish my paintings can be like ‘resting’ a while to them. 저는 그림을 통해 항상 위로를 받아왔고, 사람들에게 제 그림이 위로가 되었으면 합니다. 잠깐의 ‘쉼’ 으로써 제 그림이 전달되었으면 하는 바람이 있습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I love chocolates and coffee. I cannot even work without them (those containing caffeine). :) And I naturally love Korean dishes. 저는 초콜릿과 커피를 사랑합니다. 그것들(카페인)이 없으면 작업을 못 합니다. :) 그리고 당연히 한식을 사랑합니다.

12. Favourite book?

I like novels (especially Harry Potter), essays and especially fairy tales. I try to read many picture books. There is nothing more pleasant than appreciating the picture books of my favorite artists. When I travel somewhere, I surely drop by a bookstore in that area to buy some picture books. It’s one of my biggest pleasures of traveling. I feel really grateful to my travel mates for always accompanying me in my ‘picture-book tours’. :) 소설(특히 해리포터), 에세이 그리고 동화책을 특히 좋아합니다. 많은 그림책을 보기 위해 노력하고 있어요. 좋아하는 작가님들의 그림책을 감상하는 일보다 즐거운 것은 없을 거예요. 여행을 가면 꼭 서점에 들러 그림책을 삽니다. 그것이 여행의 가장 큰 즐거움이에요. 제 ‘그림책 탐방’을 위하여 여행지에서 항상 함께 서점에 가주는 친구에게 정말 고맙습니다. :)

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like various kinds of music. I listen to k-pops, New Age music and classical music. I prefer calm and relaxing music. I like the original soundtracks of films, too. Recently I’m into the original soundtrack of the Korean movie [The Beauty Inside, 2015]. 다양한 음악을 좋아합니다. k pop도 많이 듣고 뉴에이지, 클래식도 많이 들어요. 차분한 음악을 좋아합니다. 영화 ost도 많이 듣고 있어요. 지금은 한국 영화 <뷰티 인사이드 (The Beauty Inside, 2015)>의 ost를 듣고 있어요.

14. What are your hobbies?

I’ve become even more into reading books since I purchased an e-book reader. The best part of the e-book reader is you can read at night without turning on the lights. I began to read [Harry Potter] series again even though I’ve read it countless times. Recently I read [The man who mistook his wife for a hat] written by Oliver Sacks. 몇 년 전에 이북 리더기를 산 이후로 책 읽기에 더욱더 푹 빠졌습니다. 밤에 불을 켜지 않아도 책을 읽을 수 있다는 점이 제일 좋아요. 셀 수 없이 많이 읽은 <해리포터> 시리즈를 다시 읽기 시작했어요. 최근에는 올리버 색스의 <아내를 모자로 착각한 남자>를 읽고 있습니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I think I would write if I weren’t an artist. I have a dream of it even now and I wish I can give ‘comfort to hearts’ of others through my writings and paintings someday. 글을 쓰고 있지 않을까 생각합니다. 지금도 그 꿈을 갖고 있으며, ‘마음의 위안’을 줄 수 있는 글을 쓰고, 그림을 그리고 싶어요.
