1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I'm SaMo, a freelance illustrator active in Korea. In Korea, SaMo means love. It's a pseudonym that I made because I like to draw stories about love. I am a nine-year illustrator who is active in a variety of fields including book covers, hard copies, news reports, advertisements, CD jackets, and pansies. 안녕하세요. 저는 한국에서 활동하고 있는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터 SaMo 입니다. 한국에서 SaMo 라는 뜻은 love의 의미를 가지고 있어요. 사랑에 관련된 이야기들을 그리는 것을 좋아해서 짓게 된 필명입니다. 책표지, 단행본, 사보, 광고, CD자켓, 팬시 등 다양한 분야에서 활동 중인 9년차 일러스트레이터입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic

I like a style that has a simple screen configuration and a medium for storytelling. With a comfortable color, I draw stories that are both sad and beautiful, such as meeting, love, separation, and agony. I want to capture a feeling of loneliness and warmth in the picture. 저는 되도록 화면 구성이 심플하고 이야기를 풀어나가는 매개체가 포인트가 되는 스타일을 좋아합니다. 편안한 컬러감에 만남, 사랑, 이별, 고뇌 등 슬프기도 아름답기도 한 이야기들을 그려나가고 있습니다. 그림에 쓸쓸함이 느껴지면서도 따뜻한 감성을 담아내고 싶습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I prefer digital work. And when I wanted to be an illustrator, I opened my eyes to the idea of digital painting and I've been working on it ever since. It's digital but it's my favorite program because you can express warm feelings like manual tasks. 저는 디지털작업을 선호합니다. 일러스트레이터를 시작하고자 하였을 때 디지털페인팅 이라는 것에 대해 눈을 뜨게 되었고, 그 때부터 페인터를 사용하여 작업을 해왔습니다. 디지털 작업이지만 마치 수작업과 같은 따스한 느낌을 표현할 수 있어서 애용하는 프로그램입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I work digitally, from sketches to colors, but sometimes the images and materials that come to mind are written down in a note and then digitally worked on them. Recently, I bought an iPad and have been working on it using ProCreate. It's very portable and highly utilized and it's very helpful for work. 스케치 구상부터 채색까지 모두 디지털로 작업하지만, 가끔 언뜻 떠오르는 이미지나 소재들은 노트에 기록해 두었다가 디지털로 작업을 진행합니다. 최근에는 아이패드를 구입하여 프로크리에이트를 사용하여 작업을 하고 있어요. 휴대성이 좋고 활용도가 높아 작업하는 데에 큰 도움이 되고 있습니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Stories that come to mind about love. It's a picture of what I'm talking about. The images in the picture are inspired by listening to music but if I listen to emotional music and music played with string instruments, I can work better. ‘사랑’ 이라는 주제에 떠오르는 이야기들. 주변 혹은 저의 이야기들을 그림으로 담아냅니다. 그림의 이미지들은 음악을 들으면서 영감이 떠오르기도 하는데 감성적인 음악들과 현악기로 연주하는 음악을 들으면 더 작업이 잘 진행되는 것 같아요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Since I was young, I have spent a lot of time painting and imagining myself and I think this was the only tool that could heal me. It's like a diary where it can heal me and recall memories while doing illustrating as a profession. I hope that the people who see my paintings can relate to and heal. 어릴 적부터 그림을 그리며 혼자 상상하는 시간들이 많았는데 이것이 스스로를 치유할 수 있었던 유일한 도구였던 것 같아요. 일러스트레이터를 직업으로 하게 되면서도 그림은 나를 치유해 주기도 하고 추억을 회상할 수 있는 일기장 같은 것이죠. 제 그림을 보는 분들이 함께 공감하고 치유받을 수 있는 그림을 그려나갔으면 좋겠다고 생각합니다.

7. Where did you study?

I studied in the department of Western painting at Mokwon University in Korea. I mainly painted in oil painting there and I was able to think about what kind of style I liked and wanted to draw by learning various genres. 저는 한국의 목원대학교 서양화과에서 공부하였습니다. 그 곳에서 주로 유화로 페인팅을 하였으며 다양한 장르의 배움으로 조금씩 내가 어떤 스타일을 좋아하고 그리고 싶어하는지 고민할 수 있었던 시간이었습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I hope to improve my current work and draw a picture that has my own color. I'd like to put my paintings together in a collection or a book of works and I'd like to be able to give lectures and lectures on paintings. 5년 뒤에는 지금의 작업에서 더 발전하여 나만의 컬러가 확실한 그림을 그려나갔으면 합니다. 제 그림을 한데모아 작품집 또는 단행본을 내보고 싶고, 그림에 관련된 강연과 수업들을 진행할 수 있다면 좋겠어요.

9. What about in ten?

I want to be more active in various fields. I want to experience all kinds of things that I can do as a picture regardless of my area of cosmetics, fashion items, and installations. If I can connect with other countries, I would like to communicate with many people by painting with collaboration. 좀 더 다양한 분야에서 더 활발하게 콜라보를 하고 싶습니다. 화장품, 패션용품, 설치물 등 분야에 상관없이 그림으로서 할 수 있는 모든 다양한 경험을 해보고 싶어요. 해외와도 연이 된다면 함께 콜라보하여 많은 분들과 그림으로 소통하고 싶습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Painting makes a person the most like me. I want to draw various beautiful expressions and stories with pictures. I'd be happy if more people would know what kind of emotion SaMo is. 그림은 나라는 사람을 가장 나답게 만들어줘요. 그림으로 다양하고 아름다운 표현, 다양한 이야기들을 그려나가고 싶습니다. ‘SaMo’ 하면 어떤 감성을 그리는 작가인지 알아주는 분들이 더 많아진다면 기쁘겠어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like pork belly, chicken, and Korean food. 삼겹살, 치킨, 그리고 한식을 좋아합니다.

12. Favourite book?

The Little Prince. Every time I read it, it makes me feel different. 어린왕자. 읽을 때마다 매번 다른 느낌을 주는 것 같아요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like Korean musician Kang Asol. 한국의 뮤지션 중에 강아솔 님 음악을 좋아합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

These days, I enjoy trying various things with my iPad. I also like watching movies or dramas on Netflix. It is always with my cat, JjongA :) 요즘은 아이패드로 이것저것 다양한 것을 시도하는 것을 즐겨하고 있습니다. 또 넷플릭스로 영화나 드라마를 보는 것도 좋아해요. 그 것은 항상 저의 고양이 쫑아와 함께 합니다 :)

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I got a color list certificate because I'm interested in color, but I think I worked professionally in various fields that require color listings. 컬러에 대한 관심이 많아서 컬러리스트 자격증을 취득했었는데, 컬러리스트가 필요한 다양한 분야에서 전문적으로 일했을 것 같아요.
