1. What's your story? Where are you from?

I’m a Korean American immigrant. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but my family moved to the U.S pretty early in my life. I’m currently in LA attending school, and plan to stay put here a while. 1.λ‹Ήμ‹ μ˜ 이야기λ₯Ό λ“€λ €μ£Όμ„Έμš”. μ–΄λ””μ„œ μ™”μŠ΅λ‹ˆκΉŒ? μ €λŠ” ν•œκ΅κ³„ 미ꡭ인 μ΄λ―Όμžμž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ €λŠ” ν˜„μž¬ LA에 μžˆλŠ” 학ꡐ에 λ‹€λ‹ˆκ³  있고, λ‹ΉλΆ„κ°„ μ—¬κΈ°μ—μ„œ μƒν™œ ν•  κ³„νšμž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. 2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Lots of shapes and colors. Layers are pretty important to me. Most of my images come from a place of humor or optimism, but I think an element of melancholy usually ends up seeping through. 2. λ ˆμ΄μ–΄λŠ” μ œκ°€ μƒκ°ν•˜λŠ” μ€‘μš”ν•œ λΆ€λΆ„ 쀑 ν•˜λ‚˜μž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. 제 μž‘ν’ˆμ€ λŒ€λΆ€λΆ„ μœ λ¨Έλ‚˜ λ‚™μ²œμ£Όμ˜μ—μ„œ λ‚˜μ˜¨ 것 μž…λ‹ˆλ‹€. ν•˜μ§€λ§Œ 우울 μš”μ†Œκ°€ λμ—κ°€μ„œ 슀며 λ“€ 듯이 μžˆλŠ”κ±° κ°™μŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I love to silkscreen. I would silkscreen everything if time and resources permitted. I have a sort of obsessiveness when I work and I think silkscreening lends itself to that type of micromanagement while still possessing a chaotic element in its process. Nothing quite goes how you thought it would. Risograph is proving to be similarly satisfying. 3. λ¦¬μ†Œκ·Έλž˜ν”„λŠ” λΉ„μŠ·ν•˜κ²Œ λ§Œμ‘±μŠ€λŸ½λ‹€λŠ” 것을 증λͺ…ν•˜κ³  μžˆμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€.

4. What is your artistic process like?

A lot of it just involves stewing. After an ideas been over worked in my head, I try to draw it out, usually to mixed results. Then I end up reverse engineering something more satisfying out of the the initial attempts, which are never as good as they seemed at first. It’s a lot of anxiety and self doubt til the home stretch. 4. λ‹Ήμ‹ μ˜ 예술 μž‘ν’ˆμ€ μ–΄λ– ν•œκ°€μš”? λ§Žμ€ 것듀이 κ·Έμ € ν—ˆνŠΌ μ†Œλ¦¬λ₯Ό ν¬ν•¨ν•˜κ³  μžˆμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Anything having to do with books or design, especially retro Japanese graphic designers like Yoshikazu Ebisu. The colors and geometry, mixed in with the drawing, it’s all wonderful. Blexbolex is never far, nor is Mattotti. The Chicago Imagists are also amazing. All stories fascinate me. Myths, history, conspiracy, I think it's all amazing raw, human material to be worked with. The idea that everyone lives through their own little story with themselves as the main character is crazy to me, and I constantly wonder what it must be like for everyone else, and whether our interpretations of our own narratives is at all accurate. 5. 당신은 μ–΄λ””μ„œ, 그리고 λˆ„κ΅¬ν•œν…Œμ„œ μ˜κ°μ€ λ°›λ‚˜μš”? 제 λͺ¨λ“  λ””μžμΈ ν˜Ήμ€ 책에 λŒ€ν•œ μ˜κ°μ€ λŒ€λΆ€λΆ„ μš”μ‹œμΉ΄μ¦ˆ μ—λΉ„μŠ€ 처럼 λ³΅κ³ ν’μ˜ 일본 κ·Έλž˜ν”½ λ””μžμ΄λ„ˆμ—μ„œ μ˜΅λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ €λŠ” 그림에 채색과 λ„ν˜•μ΄ ν•¨κ»˜ μ–΄μš°λŸ¬μ Έ μžˆλŠ” 것을 보면 ν›Œλ₯ν•˜λ‹€κ³  μƒκ°ν•©λ‹ˆλ‹€. λΈ”λ ‰μŠ€λ³Όλ ‰μŠ€(Blexbolex) μ΄λ‚˜ λ§ˆν† ν‹°(Mattotti)도 κ²°μ½” 제게 μ˜κ°μ„ μ£ΌλŠ”κ²ƒκ³Ό 거리가 λ©€μ§€λŠ” μ•ŠμŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ‹œμΉ΄κ³ μ˜ μ‚¬μƒμ£Όμ˜μžλ“€ μ—μ‹œ λ©‹μžˆλ‹€κ³  μƒκ°ν•©λ‹ˆλ‹€.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It’s a constant flurry of joy and stress. It feels really satisfying to see something become real in front of you, by your own effort, especially if others are there to share in it, but getting there can be ROUGH. 6. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

Freelancing as an illustrator. While I love design and have confidence in it, graphic design is something I ideally would keep to myself. To only make images for a living would be a dream come true. I would also like to be publishing zines and other printed objects frequently. μ—μ΄μ „μ‹œμ—μ„œ μΌν•˜κ³  μžˆμ„κΉŒμš”? μ €λŠ” ν”„λ¦¬λžœμ„œμΈ μΌλŸ¬μŠ€νŠΈλ ˆμ΄ν„°λ‘œ μΌν•˜κ³  μžˆμ„κ±°λΌκ³  μƒκ°ν•©λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ œκ°€ λ””μžμΈμ„ μ‚¬λž‘ν•˜κ³  그것에 λŒ€ν•΄ μžμ‹ κ°μ΄ μžˆκΈ°μ— κ·Έλž˜ν”½ λ””μžμΈμ€ μ œκ°€ μ΄μƒμ μœΌλ‘œ 간직할 수 μžˆλŠ” κ²ƒμž…λ‹ˆλ‹€.

9. What about in ten?

Hopefully by then I’m fully immersed in independent publishing. Ten years in, I want to be focusing most of my efforts into curating content. To be in Korea again, and do my part in helping that community grow artistically is the ultimate goal. I think it’s important that immigrants like me come back and add to the culture there. I think it has a long way to go. 9. 10λ…„ λ’€μ—λŠ” μ–΄λ–€ λͺ¨μŠ΅μ΄λΌκ³  μƒκ°ν•˜λ‚˜μš”? ν¬λ§Œμ»¨λŒ€ 10년뒀에 μ €μ˜ λͺ¨μŠ΅μ€ μ•„λ§ˆλ„ 독립적인 μΆœνŒμ— μ™„μ „νžˆ λͺ°λ‘ν•˜κ³  μžˆμ„ 것 κ°™μŠ΅λ‹ˆλ‹€. μ‹λ…„λ’€μ—λŠ” μ €λŠ” νλ ˆμ΄νŒ… What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to help people connect with each other. I had the joy of growing up in between cultures. There's so much in the world that's worthwhile and we only experience a fraction of it in our lifetimes. I want to just to show something sincere about myself to others. I think that's my only real artistic aim, to be sincere and truthful about my stories and feelings and hope that people can find some common ground or add their own experiences to it. 10.
