1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, my name is YooJin Guak and I’m currently working as a freelance illustrator and designer at my own art and design studio called Whimsy Breezy, located in Seoul, Korea. I was born and raised in Seoul until 13 years old, then I moved to Toronto, Canada where I stayed until I finished my undergraduate studies at OCADU. My family has always been my best supporter even if we were far away from each other while I was studying abroad. The biggest reason I decided to move back home was because of my supportive family. 저는 현재 서울에서 프리랜서로 활동중인 일러스트레이터 곽유진입니다. 현재 제 개 인 작업실인 ‘윔지브리지’에서 창작물을 만들고 있습니다. 14살 때 토론토로 유학을 갔고, OCADU 대학에서 학업을 마친 후 한국으로 귀국하였습니다. 한국에 돌아오게 된 가장 큰 계기는 제가하는 작업에 대해 조언해주고 지속적으로 의지가 되어준 가 족들 때문입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My work is all about colors, shapes, compositions, and patterns. Sometimes I make humorous and whimsical images, other times I make very serious conceptual illustrations. It all depends on what I am inspired by at the time. These days, I draw and paint immediately when I’m inspired by things I see or experienced. 제 작업은 주로 색감, 모형, 구도, 그리고 패턴에 집중되어 있습니다. 그때그때 떠오 르는 감성에 따라 작업에 영향이 많이 가는데, 때로는 유머러스하고 따뜻한 이미지 를 표현하거나, 때로는 심오한 컨셉슈얼 이미지를 그리기도 합니다. 요즘에는 주로 제가 보고 경험한 것을 통해 영감을 얻을때마다, 그때그때 바로 드로잉이나 페인팅 을 합니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

It is hard to choose one since it’s always changing time to time. For a time I would use acrylic paint, but these days I’m really in love with watercolor. It is fascinating to see how the images turn out when you use watercolor because you have to paint very quickly and finish your piece almost all at once. Also I use watercolor straight from the tube rather than allowing it dry. This way allows me to achieve more vibrant and strong colors. 최근에는 수채화의 매력에 푹 빠져서 지내고 있습니다. 예전에는 아크릴 물감을 많 이 사용하였는데, 최근에는 주로 말리지 않은 수채화 물감을 바로 짜내서 쓰는 편입 니다. 바로 짜내서 사용할 경우 일반적인 수채화 물감이 보여주는 컬러보다 더 강한 색감을 나타낼 수 있고, 특히 수채화 물감의 특성 상 빠른 시간 안에 작업을 완성해야 하는데, 그렇게 나오는 결과물이 상당히 매력적입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I love to research a lot of different things in the media, on the internet, browse through blogs, Instagram for inspiration. In particular I like to see a lot of things about fashion, food, travel, nature, and dogs. I then save the images or write down some phrases which I’m inspired by, and I draw straight from the images. When I’m working on projects or making conceptual images, I summarize the topic I need to work on in one sentence, and then brainstorm rough sketches and ideas. 저는 다양한 매체에서 자료를 찾아보며 리서치 하는 것을 즐깁니다. 특히 웹사이트, 블로그, 인스타그램 등에서 제가 좋아하는 글이나 이미지를 보고 영감을 받는 편인 데, 그 중 특히 패션, 음식, 여행, 자연, 강아지에 관련된 이미지에 대해 관심 있게 찾 아봅니다. 그러다 마음에드는 문구를 적어놓거나 저장해두고, 그것을 토대로 바로 드로잉을 시작합니다. 프로젝트를 진행하거나 컨셉슈얼 일러스트레이션 작업을 할 때에는, 주제를 한 문장으로 압축하여 적어놓고 그것을 곱씹습니다. 그 이후 브레인 스토밍을 하며 떠오르는 아이디어를 스케치합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Everything. People around me, things I see, dogs, fashion, food, music, books..everything! 모든 것에서 영감을 얻습니다. 제 주변 사람들, 제가 보는 모든 것들, 강아지, 패션, 음 식 음악, 책 등...주위의 모든 사물을 참조하고 고민하며 영감을 얻습니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I started to draw since I was very little, around 2 years old or so, and my mom’s passion for art has inspired me a lot. She’s not working in art field, but she used to paint beside her work and I was always fascinated by her painting. Art is just part of my life. I like to express my emotions and feelings through my drawings and paintings. Sometimes I try to represent them in a visual metaphor, especially when I feel down, as it helps to relieve my stress at some point. If you see some of my drawings, they can be very serious and emotional, but most of them are pretty happy and whimsical. 저는 2살 때부터 그림을 그렸던 것 같은데, 어머니의 그림에 대한 열정이 저에게 많 은 영향을 주었다고 봅니다. 어머니께서는 예술업계에 종사하시지는 않지만, 일을 하시면서도 틈틈이 그림을 꾸준히 그리셨고, 전 어린 나이에도 항상 어머니의 그림 을 보며 감탄했던 기억이 납니다. 이런 환경에서 자라왔기 때문에 예술은 저의 삶의 일부라고 생각합니다. 저는 저의 감정과 느낌을 작업으로 나타내는 것을 좋아하는 데, 특히 제가 힘든 일이 있거나 우울할 때의 감정을 은유적으로 작업 안에서 표현하 는 것을 즐기고, 이러한 감정이 작품으로 드러나 완성되었을 때 카타르시스를 느낍 니다. 제 작품 중 일부는 심오한 이미지를 표현하기도 하지만, 대체적으로 밝고 따듯 한 느낌의 작업이 많습니다.

7. Where did you study?

I studied illustration at OCAD University in Toronto, Canada. 저는 캐나다 토론토에 위치한 OCADU 에서 일러스트레이션을 전공하였습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Probably I will still be working as an illustrator or painter. Maybe I would make more art products from my studio and selling them worldwide. 아마 그때도 일러스트레이터로서 작업을 하며 지내지 않을까 싶어요. 제 작업으로 예술 상품을 더 만들어서 다양한 나라에서 판매하고 있을 수도 있고요.

9. What about in ten?

I do not know where I would be. May be I might have some kids or dogs, maybe living in different city or country with my husband, but anyhow I will still be making art. 10년 후에는 어디에서 어떤 일을 하고 있을지 모르겠습니다. 아이를 낳아 기를 수도, 강아지와 함께 살고 있을 수도 있고, 다른 도시나 다른 나라에서 제 남편과 함께 살고 있을지도 모르겠어요. 그렇다 해도 그때도 여전히 그림은 그리고 있을 듯 합니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I would love to create images that can make people smile and give them comfort. As I feel joy and get excitement every time I have a new assignment, I hope the results of my artwork would make others feel the same way I do when they see my final work. 제 작품으로 인해서 다른 사람들이 미소를 지었으면 좋겠고, 위로가 될 수 있는 그림 을 그리고 싶습니다. 새로운 프로젝트나 의뢰를 받을 때마다 항상 기쁘고 즐거운데, 그 기분을 프로젝트 결과물을 보면서도 느끼고 싶고, 제 작품을 보는 사람들도 동일 한 느낌을 받았으면 합니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I love chicken. Especially Korean chicken dish like Chi-mac (fried chicken and beer), Jjim Dak(braised chicken), Dak galbi (spicy stir fried chicken), and Sam gyetang(Gingeng chicken soup). I love sushi and pizza as well. 저는 닭 요리를 무척 좋아합니다. 특히 한국식 닭 요리요. 치맥, 찜닭, 닭갈비, 삼계 탕.. 다 좋아요. 스시와 피자도 좋아합니다.

12. Favourite book?

I’ve been reading a book called ‘Keeping a Distance’ by Japanese author Ayako Sono. I’ve read it several times already. 요즘 읽고 있는 책은 소노 아야코의 ‘약간의 거리를 두다’ 라는 책입니다. 최근 여러 번 읽었습니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I listen to everything. These days, I’m listening to Frank Ocean and K-hiphop. 장르를 가리지 않고 다 듣는 것 같아요. 요즘에는 Frank Ocean의 노래와, 한국 힙합 에 빠져있어요.

14. What are your hobbies?

Go out and eat, socializing with my friends, watching Korean TV shows. 나가서 좋아하는 사람들과 맛있는 것 먹고, 수다 떨고, 그리고 한국 쇼 프로 보는 것 을 즐깁니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

May be I would be a matchmaker. haha. We have a company called Duo in Korea, it’s the matchmaking company for the purpose of marriage, and my friends make fun of me saying I should run Guak’s Duo. I’ve arranged a lot of blind dates for people around and it’s just so delightful to see when they are happy together. 제가 예술가가 아니었다면, 저는 아마 결혼정보회사에서 일하고 있지 않을까 싶네 요. 하하. 제 친구들이 곽’듀오’라고 놀릴 정도로 사람들 서로 소개해주고 이어주는 것을 좋아해요. 주변사람들이 함께 기뻐하는 모습을 보면 저도 기뻐요.
