1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I am a freelance illustrator working under the name of Atelier Arearea based in the Republic of Korea. I am very pleased to be here. Thank you. 안녕하세요! 한국에서 활동하고 있는 프리랜스 일러스트레이터 작가 “아틀리에 아레아레아” 라고 합니다. 만나 뵙게 되어 반갑습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

‘Love by people’, that is what I try to imply in my works. I try to paint that feeling of love, whether it is the love at present, or the love in the past, or even the love that has not yet come but yet you still dream of it. I love people and through my works, I would like to share the adorable feeling you get from other people when you are in love. You can just view my works in a warm, relaxing way. There is no big meaning behind them. If ‘love’ comes to your mind after viewing my work, then that is the story I have hoped to share. 사람의 사랑을 그림으로 담고 있어요. 그림을 통해, 그들의 지금의 모습이거나 혹은 잊었던 사랑의 마음, 그리고 꿈꾸었던 사랑의 형태를 그림으로 기록하고, 수집하는 작업을 해요. 저는 사람들을 좋아하고, 사람들에게 받은 사랑스러움을 그림으로 그려 더 많이 나누길 원해요. 제 작업들은 그저 편하고 선하게 바라보시면 돼요. 그림을 보며 사랑을 떠올려 주신다면 그게 제가 가장 말하고 싶은 그림의 이야기예요.

3. What is your favorite medium and why?

I like traditional mediums because I find them lyrical: how the texture of the paper and the pencil lines overlapping with paints move people’s feelings unintentionally. On the digital mediums, however, I like having the size freedom of the paper which allows me to work in a more detailed and diverse way. Watercolor and gouache are my favorites in traditional mediums and for the digital works, I usually use Photoshop and Paint. 수작업은, 종이의 질감, 연필 선과 겹쳐지는 물감이 계산하지 않는 감동을 주는 서정적인 작업이라 좋아하고 디지털 페인팅의 경우는, 종이의 크기로부터 자유로워질 수 있어 좀 더 세밀하고 확장된 작업을 할 수 있어 좋아해요. 수작업을 할 때에는 주로 수채화와 과슈를 즐겨 사용하고, 디지털 페인팅은 포토샵과 페인트 프로그램을 즐겨 사용하고 있습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I start by picking a sentence out either from the conversations I had with other people or from a story I come across. After that, I imagine the scene for the sentence and do research for an attractive composition, and after I have set the composition, I start sketching then I move on to coloring. I find a composition to be the most important part of the process, hence I spend the most time on it. 사람들과 나눈 대화들 혹은 글 속의 이야기들 속에서 그려나갈 한 줄의 문장을 떠올리며 작업을 시작해요. 문장을 표현할 그림 속 이야기, 장면을 상상하고 매력적으로 보이기 위한 구도에 대한 자료들을 수집하고 구도가 결정이 되면 밑그림과 채색을 해요. 저는 작업 과정 중에 “구도”에 대한 고민을 가장 많이 하고 중요하게 생각합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

“Conversations with the people I love.” Feelings I get from talking to other people, books, photographs, short sentences in social media, movies, and sceneries, they all get combined with my imagination and inspire me every now and then. As I listen to their stories, I get to see a different perspective on love and various forms of love, which is always my good source of work inspiration. “사랑하는 사람들과의 대화.” 대화를 나누며 오고 가는 감정들이, 책, 사진, SNS의 짧은 문장, 영화 그리고 풍경과 상상력을 더해져 영감을 받곤 해요. 그들의 이야기를 듣다 보면 사랑의 여러 모습에 관한 새로운 시선과 깨달음을 얻을 수 있어 늘 작업의 귀감이 되어요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art is what made me a better person. It heals me when drawing a sorrowful memory. It allows a lovely memory to linger in me. It forgives my somewhat foolish acts in the past. It can also be filled up with my dreams. Art makes me a kind, thoughtful person. 그림을 그리는 일은, 부족한 나를 성장시키고 성숙하게 만들어요. 아팠던 순간을 그리며 치유를, 사랑했던 순간들을 그리며 여운을, 못났던 나의 과거를 용서받으며, 꿈으로 채울 수도 있게 만들어요. 그림은 저를 사려 깊고 상냥한 사람으로 만들어 주고 있어요.

7. Where did you study?

Painting has always been around me. I am self-taught and I have learned the skills of paintings all because I loved painting. 그림은 꾸준히 제 곁에 있어왔고, 지나온 과거와 환경에서 그림이 좋아 스스로 터득하고 배우게 되었어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

In five years, I hope to become the artist who paints in a balanced way. I hope to have developed my own stable style that people can recognize my work just by looking at it. I would also like to have the freedom of not worrying about living expenses. I hope to have nicely solved these two problems so that I have the privilege of working on my work continuously. 5년 뒤에는 균형감 있게 그림을 그려나가는 작가가 되었으면 좋겠어요. 그림만 보아도 아레아레아의 그림이다! 하고 알 수 있는 스타일의 안정감과, 그림을 그릴 때에 빈번히 고민하게 만드는 그림을 위한 생활비의 안정감. 이 커다란 두 가지의 숙제를 잘 풀어나가서 그때에도 즐겁게 그림을 그리고 있었으면 좋겠어요.

9. What about in ten?

In 10 years from now, I would like to have a space where I can share my works closely with people. I have endless ideas on this but first, I hope to accomplish your previous question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” so that I can dream bigger. 10년 뒤에는, 그림을 가깝게 나눌 수 있는 공간을 갖고 싶어요. 그러한 아이디어는 무궁무진한데, 현재는 앞의 질문인 5년 뒤의 내가 잘 성장해서 10년 뒤의 꿈을 더 크게 키워나갈 수 있길 바래요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope to become a warm-hearted artist who can communicate with the viewers and whose works give a warm, relaxing feeling to the viewers. 온기 있는 작가이자 소통할 수 있는 유연한 작가로 성장해서, 그림을 볼 때에 편하고 선한 마음을 갖게 해주는 작가로 자리 잡을 수 있기를 바래요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Nicely fermented kimchi with a warm bowl of rice. 잘익은 김치와 따듯한 밥.

12. Favourite book?

It is a Korean book written by Lee Byung-ryul (이병률). It is called Kkeullim (끌림) which means ‘Attraction’ in Korean. 20대의 내가 사랑한 이병률의 “끌림.”

13. Favourite genre of music?

I love fork music. Especially a Korean singer named Kim Kwang-seok (김광석 in Korean) and Jaejooboys (재주소년 in Korean) are my favorites. The way they sing as if reading a poet and the sound of the classical guitar with it is it. 포크. 특별히 통기타 소리와 읊조리듯 노래하는 김광석과 재주소년의 음악의 그것.

14. What are your hobbies?

Drinking beer and having a conversation with people all night. 여행지에서 맥주를 마시며 밤새 이야기를 나누는 것.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Actually, I had a different life prior to being an illustrator. I had worked as a fashion designer for a long time and because of that I think, if I weren’t an artist, I would have continued that job. However, I chose art and I would choose art again if I were at the same crossroads. 실제로 그림을 그리기 이전의 삶이 있었어요. 이전에는 패션디자이너 일을 오래간 해왔기에, 그림을 그리지 않았다면 패션회사에서 디자이너 일을 계속 했을 거라 생각해요. 갈림길의 선택은 결국 다시 그림이겠지만요.
