1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I'm Soony. I have been running my graphic studio, Soony Youth, as both an illustrator and a graphic designer. 안녕하세요, 수니입니다. 저는 한국에서 수니유쓰라는 그래픽스튜디오를 운영하며 일러스트레이터, 그래픽디자이너로 활동중입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I draw people's expressions of a fleeting moment and how they handle the situation. I especially feel attracted by women's delicate figures. I try to draw not my own story, but other people's stories. 저는 사람들의 순간의 표정, 상황에 대처한 사람들의 표정을 그리고 있습니다. 특히 여자들의 섬세한 모습들이 저는 가장 매력적으로 느낍니다. 나만의 이야기가 아닌 사람들의 이야기를 그릴려고합니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

My work is done both by hand and digitally, and It's coloured by Photoshop. I prefer digital work since I can express more in detail. Character work is created by a program, Illustrator. 수작업과 디지털을 함께합니다. 포토샵으로 채색작업을 합니다. 디지털을 통해, 좀더 디테일하게 표현할 수 있어서 선호합니다. 캐릭터 작업은 일러스트프로그램으로 작업을 합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I imagine when I take a walk or when I look at someone's face in some places. I take notes with some rough sketches and then I plan and start drawing when I come home. I pay attention to the expression and the colour of the person the most. 산책을 나가거나, 어떤 장소의 사람들의 표정을 보고 상상합니다. 간단한 러프스케치와 메모를 해놓고, 집에 돌아와 작업을 구상하고 진행합니다. 그 사람의 표정과, 그 사람의 대한 컬러에 대해 가장 신경을 쓰고 있습니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I get inspired by emotions that I have faced in my life. and I also get inspired by the train of thoughts from sentences in some books. For example, I really love Milan Kundera. So I think my works could become lighter or heavier. 살아가면서 부딪히는 감정들로 영감을 받습니다. 그리고 책을 읽고 그 문장들로 생각을 이어가다 영감을 받습니다. 특히, 밀란쿤데라를 사랑합니다. 그래서 제 그림은 어쩌면 점점더 가벼워질수도 무거워질수도 있다고 생각합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I feel relieved from thoughts that are hard to express, so then I can see with clearer eyes. I always feel frightened when I draw, but I feel the best after I complete a painting. 표현하기 어려웠던 생각들을 해소할수있습니다. 그래서 더 맑은 눈으로 볼 수있습니다. 그림을 그릴땐 항상 두렵지만, 그림을 완성후엔 가장 좋은기분을 느낍니다.

7. Where did you study?

I graduated from college and I have drawn more since I learned and experienced in the world, so I could draw my own work sincerely. 전문대를 졸업하여 사회에서 경험하고 배우며 그림을 더 많이 그리게 되었습니다. 더 진지하게 더 제그림을 그릴수 있었습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I may stay in South Korea, but I would like to study in Germany later in the future. 한국에 계속 있을 수도 있지만, 독일에 공부하러 가고싶은 생각을 가지고 있습니다.

9. What about in ten?

I want to develop my own work and design in Soony Youth Studio. Also I plan to study and experience more. 수니유쓰스튜디오에서 제 그림과 디자인을 키워가고싶습니다. 그리고 더 많이 공부하고 경험할 계획입니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Firstly, I want to deal with a wide variety of contents with my illustrations. It would be especially great if I can work with my favorite musicians, My final goal is having a regular artist's life like drawing what I want to, exhibiting or selling my works. 우선, 제 그림으로 다양한 콘텐츠 작업을 하고싶습니다. 특히 좋아하는 뮤지션의 작업을 한다면 정말 좋겠습니다. 최종 목표는 제가 그리고싶은 그림을 그리고, 전시를 하고, 그림을 팔고 그렇게 평함한 작가의 삶을 살고싶습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Beer and celery. 맥주와 셀러리

12. Favourite book?

The Joke and The Festival of Insignificance by Milan Kundera. 밀란쿤데라의 농담, 무의미의 축제

13. Favourite genre of music?

It depends on my feeling, but I like Rock music. 기분에 따라 다릅니다만, 락을 좋아합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Traveling, watching movies and performances, sharing a drink and talking. 여행과 영화, 공연, 술한잔과 이야기입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I'm not really sure. 잘 모르겠습니다.
