1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi. I am currently a freelance illustrator living in Seoul, and draws everyday moments in our lives. My nickname is Vinyin, and my real name is Guyebin. My artwork includes album covers, cup holders, poster designs, etc. I work with various subjects and use various techniques, and I am currently working on a series of portraits depicting companion animals and their owners. And I plan to apply my drawings to multiple products. 안녕하세요. 저는 현재 한국 서울에 살고 있고, 우리의 삶 속 순간순간을 그리는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터입니다. 비니빈이라는 닉네임으로 활동하고 있고, 본명은 구예빈입니다. 아트웍으로는 앨범커버와 컵홀더, 포스터 디자인 등을 작업하였습니다. 여러 주제와 기법을 활용하여 작업을 하며 현재는 반려견과 주인의 삶에 대한 포트레이트 시리즈를 작업하고 있습니다. 앞으로는 제 드로잉을 여러 제품에 접목 시키는 제품디자인 작업도 해나가려고 합니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I’d like to paint pictures of repetitive routines of contemporary lives, which will serve as a reminder of the value of daily life. 현대인들의 반복 되며 의미 없게 지나간 하루의 평범한 일상을 그림으로 표현하여 자신의 일상을 다시 한 번 되돌아보게 하는 그림을 그리고자 합니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like to draw live drawings, so I use pencils and charcoals. I use a variety of coloring materials and finish using Photoshop to express texture. 라이브한 드로잉을 즐겨하는 편이기에 연필, 목탄을 사용하여 드로잉 합니다. 채색은 다양한 컬러링 재료를 사용하며 포토샵으로 질감 표현을 하여 마무리합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I do a free drawing with a variety of ingredients and repeat until I’m satisfied with the atmosphere and composition. I put a lot of effort into testing what patterns and colors should be used. 다양한 재료로 프리드로잉을 하며 마음에 드는 구도나 분위기가 나올 때 까지 에스키스하는 과정을 반복합니다. 또한 어떠한 패턴과 색을 써야할지 테스트를 하는 과정에 공을 들입니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I’m often inspired by the style and appearance of various people walking on the streets or in the subway. Visiting art exhibitions gives me a new sense and perspective. 지하철이나 길을 걷다 마주치는 다양한 사람들의 스타일과 생김새에서 영감을 얻기도 하며, 순수미술 전시 관람을 통해 새로운 감각과 시선을 얻기도 합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

For me, painting is a conversation with others. I think it's a good way to communicate the emotions and values that you can't express in your language. When I see a flower, which most people don’t pay much attention to, I tend to think about ways to represent its texture and atmosphere. It seems to me that everything gives me a certain kind of meaning. 저에게 있어 그림은 다른사람과의 대화입니다. 언어만으로 표현할 수 없는 감정과 가치관을 그림을 통해 다른 사람에게 전달할 수 있는 좋은 수단이라고 생각합니다. 또한 남들이 보기엔 꽃 한 송이 일지라도 어떤 재료로 어떤 분위기를 표현해낼 것인지를 생각하게 하는 등, 모든 개체에 저 나름대로의 의미부여를 하게 해주는 변화를 준 것 같습니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in art design for children at college but I didn't specialize in drawing pictures, so I attended an illustration academy after graduating from college. 대학교에서 아동미술디자인을 전공하였으나 그림을 전문적으로 배우지 않았기에 대학교 졸업 후 일러스트학원에서 그림을 더 배웠습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years later, I'd like to publish more than one picture book, and I want to become a popular writer who has given private exhibitions. 5년후에는 제가 그림을 그리고 글을 쓴 그림책을 한 권 이상 출판하고, 개인전도 여러 번 연 대중화된 작가가 되고 싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

10 years later, I'd like to work in a wider range of fields, such as large-scale installations of art. I would like to publish an essay with drawings I have worked on while traveling all over the world. 10년 후에는 대형 설치 미술 작업과 같은 더 다양한 분야의 작업을 해보고 싶고, 세계를 여행하며 그린 드로잉을 담은 그림 에세이도 출판하고 싶습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

There's a theme that I've got in my drawing— the unfulfilled dream. It's a testament to the desire to be able to reach the dream without just conforming to reality. I’d like my drawings to arouse empathy with a lot of people. 제가 그리는 주제 중 '못 다 이룬 꿈' 이라는 주제가 있습니다. 현실에 순응한 채 무의미한 하루를 살아가지 않고, 진정으로 원하는 꿈에 다가갈 수 있었으면 하는 의지가 담겨 있는 작업이기에. 이러한 주제의식이 담긴 제 그림에 많은 사람들이 공감을 느낄 수 있는 그림을 그려 나가고 싶습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

My favorite food is naengmyeon, Sushi and Mexican cuisine. 좋아하는 음식은 냉면, 초밥, 멕시칸요리 입니다.

12. Favourite book?

I like novels that stimulate imagination. I often read novels by Jung Yu-jung. 상상력을 자극하는 장편 소설을 좋아합니다. 정유정 작가의 소설을 자주 읽습니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I usually work listening to R&B hip hop genre. R&B hip hop 장르를 들으며 주로 작업합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

I like to draw free-looking people sitting in a cafe, listen to music, go to an artistic cafe, and view picture books. 취미는 인테리어가 감각적인 카페를 찾아가 음악을 들으며 카페 안에 앉아 있는 자유로운 모습의 사람들을 드로잉하는 것과 그림책보기입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

If I were not an artist, I would aspire to be an actress, who can experience different lives of people from all walks of life. 아티스트가 아니었다면 다른 사람의 삶을 무궁무진하게 살아 볼 수 있는 배우가 됐을수도 있을 것 같습니다.
