1. What’s your story? Where are you from?

I’m Samsoopil, a freelance illustrator from South Korea. I enjoy the whole process of making images with what I think and what I see. I’ve drawn illustrations for album covers and magazines. I always try to keep myself open to every kind of opportunity. It has helped me broaden my perspectives and most importantly, love my life more. 

한국에서 활동 중인 일러스트레이터 삼수필입니다. 저는 보고 듣고 생각하고 것을 이미지화하는 과정을 즐깁니다. 앨범 커버와 잡지 삽화 등을 그렸고 작업의 종류에 있어 한계를 두지 않으려고 합니다. 다양한 기회를 통해 관점이 넓어졌고, 무엇보다도 삶을 더 사랑하게 되었기 때문입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like looking at nicely matched colors. The object can be anything. It can be a scene from a movie, a bottle of beer, a cover of a book, a poster, prints on clothes and so on. When I draw, I believe I can tell different stories by changing the colors I use.

영화의 한 장면, 맥주병, 책 표지, 포스터, 옷의 무늬 등 대상이 무엇이든, 조화로운 색 배치를 좋아합니다. 그림을 그릴 때도, 색을 바꿈에 따라 다른 이야기를 전할 수 있다고 믿습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Procreate is my go-to application. It’s intuitive and practical and I relate to these features. One of my goals is to be a digital nomad. So, when I make decisions for what I do now, the first thing I consider is whether it will help me achieve my goal or not. That’s why I prefer digital drawing.

직관적이고 실용적인 부분이 저와 잘 맞기 때문에 프로크리에이트를 자주 사용합니다. 제 목표 중 하나는 디지털 노마드가 되는 것입니다. 그래서 지금 무엇을 할지 결정할 때, 제일 먼저 고려하는 것은 이 선택이 목표를 달성하는 데 도움이 되는가입니다. 그런 맥락에서 디지털 드로잉을 선호합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

On a daily basis, I make a lot of notes and try to record my thoughts. I prefer writing. These days, I write short novels and essays as a hobby and it also helps me come up with new ideas for my drawings. I often imagine what the characters in my novels would look like. And, that’s why I have so many portraits of imaginary people. 

I also get inspiration from random songs I run into. In that case, I start making a lot of sketches until I find the best way to express the feelings I got while listening to music.  

매일 생각을 글로 기록합니다. 요즘에는 단편소설과 에세이 쓰기를 즐기는데, 그림을 위한 아이디어를 떠올리는 데에도 도움이 됩니다. 종종 제가 쓴 소설의 인물들이 어떻게 생겼을까 상상하고 초상화로 그리기도 합니다. 

우연히 듣게 된 노래에서 영감을 받기도 합니다. 그런 경우에는, 노래를 들으며 느낀 감정을 표현할 수 있는 이미지가 나올 때까지 계속 스케치를 합니다. 

5. Who and/or what inspires your work? 

I like to spend time alone because that’s when I get inspired the most. Basically, what I see and hear inspires me. Then, I put my thoughts into drawings. But, I can’t always just wait for inspiration to come. That’s when I start making lots of sketches. It’s the process of searching for inspiration in a more active form.

저는 혼자 있을 때 가장 영감이 많이 떠오르기 때문에 혼자 시간 보내는 것을 좋아합니다. 제가 보고 듣는 것에서 영감을 얻고 그때 든 생각들을 그림으로 옮깁니다. 하지만 늘 영감이 떠오를 때까지 기다리기만 할 수는 없기 때문에 스케치를 많이 합니다. 저에게 스케치는 더 적극적으로 영감을 찾아가는 과정입니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art helps me find balance in my life. I’m a realistic and rational person, especially when it comes to my career and relationship. I’m afraid of making mistakes. And, it often stresses me out because everyone makes mistakes! Art frees me from all these concerns and obsession over perfection.

미술은 제 삶의 균형입니다. 일이나 관계에 있어서 현실적이고 합리적인 편이고 실수하는 것을 두려워합니다. 그렇지만 누구나 실수를 하기 때문에 제 성격 자체가 스트레스로 다가오기도 합니다. 미술은 저를 완벽에 대한 집착과 고민으로부터 벗어나게 해 줍니다.

7. Where did you study?

In Korea and US. I grew up in Korea but went to university in the US. The art curriculum was impressive. It taught me how to draw what I think and feel. I still think about the art class when I’m stuck in a rut while drawing.

한국에서 자랐고 미국에서 대학을 갔습니다. 그 학교의 미술 수업이 인상 깊었는데 제가 생각하고 느끼는 것을 그리는 방법을 가르쳐주었습니다. 지금도 그림을 그리면서 막히거나 슬럼프가 오면 그때 들었던 미술 수업을 떠올립니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to do book designs and more album art. I like working on my own too but I love collaborating with others. I have to admit that I enjoy being credited by the clients. I’m not an artist who just keeps drawing something for my own satisfaction. I like sharing my works with others. So, I definitely want to build my career in that direction. And, I see myself travelling more.

책 디자인과 더 많은 앨범 아트 작업을 하고 싶어요. 혼자 작업하는 것도 좋지만 다른 분들과 함께 작업할 때 정말 즐거워요. 제 만족만을 위해서 그리는 것보단 남들에게 보여주고 칭찬받는 게 더 즐겁기 때문에 그런 방향으로 경력을 쌓고 싶어요. 그리고, 5년 뒤엔 더 많이 여행 다닐 것 같아요.

9. What about in ten?

I live alone now and I love it but in ten years, I want to have my own family. It doesn’t have to be a husband and kids. It can be a cat, a dog, a roommate or anything/ anyone. 

지금은 혼자 사는 게 너무 좋지만 십 년 후에는 저만의 가족을 갖고 싶어요. 꼭 남편과 아이가 아니더라도 상관없어요. 고양이나 강아지, 룸메이트가 될 수도 있고요. 

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Nothing. I don’t want to set any goals with art. It’s just one of the things I enjoy in my life and I don’t want it to be the only thing I can love. I will keep drawing not because I want to achieve something with it but because I like it. If something amazing happens, it will be great. But, even if nothing happens, I won’t complain because I already had fun with it.

그림 그리는 것에 있어서는 목표를 정하고 싶지 않아요. 그림은 제가 살면서 즐기는 것들 중 하나지만 제가 사랑하는 유일한 것은 아니에요. 무언가를 성취하고 싶어서 보다는 그냥 좋으니까 계속 그림을 그리고 있어요. 더 크게 성공한다면 기쁘겠지만 그렇지 않더라도 이미 충분히 즐거웠기 때문에 그걸로 충분할 것 같아요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Whatever my mom makes. She’s the best cook.

엄마가 만들어주는 모든 것. 엄마 음식이 제일 맛있어요.

12. Favourite book?

If there was a parallel universe and there were thousands of versions of me, all of “me” would read Harry Potter. It defines my childhood.

만약 평행우주가 존재해서 그 안에 수천 명의 내가 있다면, 모든 버전의 나는 해리포터를 읽을 거예요. 제 어린 시절을 떠올리면 해리포터가 먼저 생각나요.

13. Favourite genre of music? 

Masego is my favorite genre. I especially love his song, Black Love.

마세고가 장르다! 특히 블랙 러브라는 곡 좋아해요.

14. What are your hobbies? 

I love tasting nice food if that can be a hobby too. It’s the only thing I can truly enjoy without feeling any pressure or stress!

진짜 맛있는 음식을 맛보는 걸 좋아해요. 이게 취미가 될 수 있는지 모르겠지만 아무런 압박이나 스트레스 없이 즐길 수 있는 유일한 취미 같아요.

15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?

I would be a rich investor and buy a lot of artwork.

돈 많은 투자자가 돼서 그림을 많이 살 거예요.
