1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I am Hwarim Lee. I was born and raised in South Korea and I am currently working as a freelance illustrator in New York. As far as I can remember, I was always drawing and I am excited to create and make art for the rest of my life. My never-ending curiosity motivates me to face any new challenges. I enjoy communicating with diverse audiences and I am very happy to be featured on Ballpit. 안녕하세요 저는 이화림입니다. 한국에서 태어나 자랐고 현재 뉴욕에서 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있습니다. 기억 속 저는 항상 그림을 그렸는데요 제 남은 인생도 계속 창조적인 일을 하게되어 기쁩니다. 호기심이 왕성해서 새로운 도전을 즐깁니다. 다양한 사람들과 교류하고 싶었는데 Ballpit에 소개되어 행복해요.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Rather than stressing on accurate proportions and perspective, I mainly focus on trying to harmonize ideas and themes into one composition through line quality. Wonky but confident lines are merely controlled but make sense in my world. 정확한 투시나 비율보다 선을 이용한 조화로운 세상을 구축하는데 중점을 둡니다.흔들리지만 확실한 선들은 미약하게 컨트롤 되지만 제 세상속에서 자연스럽게 존재합니다

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Although I enjoy experimenting with all kinds of media, I am most drawn to the pen, especially those with felt and metal nibs. Not only is it really portable, but the pen gives me really great line quality and control. I can either draw simply or really dig in and make very complex, textured works. I feel that the pen helps bring out my own personal, distinctive style. I would say the pen and I make a great match! 실험할 땐 여러 재료를 함께 쓰는걸 좋아하지만 평소 작업시엔 펜과 잉크를 이용한 작업을 가장 선호합니다. 금속 촉과 펠트 촉 펜 둘 다 좋아해요. 펜은 어디든지 들고 가기 편할 뿐 아니라 선을 컨트롤하기 편합니다. 펜을 이용해서 아주 간단하게도 그릴 수 있고 아주 파고들어 복잡하고 텍스쳐로 가득하게도 그릴 수 있습니다. 펜을 사용했을때 가장 저다운 스타일이 나오기 나온다고 느낍니다. 펜과 저는 궁합이 잘 맞는 것 같아요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

It depends on the work but usually it begins with a spark of inspiration. Once I decide on the general subject matter, I then go over what aspects and elements of the story I want to convey and focus on. This process is usually figured out through many rough thumbnail sketches; I draw as many as I need to until they make sense compositionally and thematically. That’s when I finally start the line drawing of the final piece. Some of my work is only line drawings while others are digitally colored. When I do apply color to my work, it’s very interesting to see the transformation of a line drawing to a fully colored drawing. 어떤 작업을 하느냐에 조금씩 다르지만 보편적으로 영감이 떠오르며 시작합니다. 무엇을 그리고 싶은지 명확해지면 그림을 통해 무엇을 말하고 중점을 두고 싶은지 정합니다. 그 후 필요한 만큼 작은 썸네일 스케치를 그립니다. 썸네일이 머리속의 이미지와 맞아떨어지고 옳다는 느낌이 들면 선 작업에 들어갑니다.어떤 작업들은 선에서 끝나기도 하고 디지털로 색을 입히기도 합니다. 선만 있는 작업과 색이 들어간 작업의 차이를 보는게 굉장히 재밌습니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

My personal work is usually inspired by non-illustration related forms, such as music, poetry, and books. A lot of songs and books help me visualize all of these different concepts and atmospheres. Sometimes I work off of only one source of inspiration; other times I deviate from the original and create something entirely different. I also re-visualize and take inspiration from my personal journal, where I document my daily feelings and thoughts. My journals are non-fiction but my illustrations are fictional. 제 개인 작품들은 대부분 시각 예술이 아닌 형태의 예술에서 영감을 받습니다. 예를 들어 음악, 시 그리고 책 등입니다. 노래와 글들은 다양한 컨셉들과 분위기들을 시각화하는데 도움을 줍니다. 제 작품 중 몇은 하나의 영감을 그대로 구현하려고 하기도 하고 어떤 작품들은 다른 아이디어와 결합시켜 새로운 메세지를 만듭니다. 저는 제 일기에서도 영감을 받고 새로운 이미지를 창조합니다. 일상에서 보고 느낀점과 생각들에서 영감받아 다시 시각화 합니다. 제 일기는 논픽션이지만 제 그림은 픽션입니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art really broadens my world and allows me to communicate a lot of different topics to a lot of different people. Illustrating helps me digest my own experiences, thoughts, and emotions. When I am drawing, I can look back and analyze my routines, rethink my interpretations, and comprehend my feelings more indepthly. I see my finished pieces as refined compositions of myself. 그림은 저의 세상을 넓히고 또 다양한 주제로 여러 사람들과 소통하게 합니다. 그림을 그리는 것은 제 경험, 생각과 감상을 소화시키는 것을 돕습니다. 그림을 그림으로써 저는 제 일상을 되돌아보고, 감상에 대해 다시 생각해 보고, 제 감정을 이해합니다. 제 완성된 그림은 저의 감상의 정제된 형태입니다.

7. Where did you study?

I recently graduated from Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in Illustration. I had a great, but intense, four years of studying illustration with inspirational people. 최근에 미국에서 로드 아일랜드 디자인 스쿨에서 일러스트레이션과를 졸업했습니다. 사 년 동안 흥미로운 사람들과 불타 오르며 공부했습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Within five years, I want to explore different fields of Illustration, such as editorial, animation, and toy design. I see myself jumping from one thing to the next, discovering all of the wonderful aspects of Illustration. I am also really open to collaborating with people from different professions, including those who are not artists or designers. If anyone is interested, please feel to contact me and let’s make something creative! 오년간 저는 일러스트를 활용한 다양한 분야를 경험하고 싶습니다. 예로 들면 시사출판, 애니메이션, 장난감 등 많은 분야에 관심이 있습니다. 저는 즐겁게 여러 분야를 겅중겅중 뛰어다니며 새로운 아이디어와 형태를 만들어 내고 있을 것 같아요. 일러스트의 가능성을 시험해보고 싶습니다. 저는 꼭 아티스트와 디자이너 뿐 아닌 다양한 분야의 전문가들과 콜라보해보고 싶어요. 편하게 연락주세요. 같이 창조적인 일을 해봅시다!

9. What about in ten?

I’m not sure if this could happen in just ten years, but it would be great if I could create my own brand. I want to produce seasonal illustrations related to different themes using different medium and platforms. I also would like to be collaborating often with others in ten years. 십년안에 가능할지는 모르겠지만 저는 하나의 브랜드를 만들어 보고싶어요. 각각의 주제에 맞춰 시즌별로 다양한 형태의 일러스트 작품들을 보여드리고 싶습니다. 물론 십년 후에도 계속 다른 분들과 콜라보레이션을 하고 있을거에요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope to successfully convey my own interpretations and feelings about a variety of different topics through my work. 저는 제그림을 통해 성공적으로 다양한 주제들을 저만의 해석과 느낌들을 이야기해보고 싶어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Recently, I got addicted to Lay’s classic potato chips. I even ordered 5 bags of party size Lay’s on Amazon. Hopefully, I don’t eat too much that I actually become them. 최근 레이즈 감자칩에 중독되었습니다. 무려 아마존에서 5봉지의 파티사이즈의 감자칩을 주문했어요. 너무 먹다가 감자가 될까봐 걱정입니다.

12. Favourite book?

Choosing a favorite is always hard but if I would recommend one book from my bookshelf, The City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers. The story is full of imagination and the detail of the world is over the top. 가장 좋아하는 것을 꼽는것은 항상 어렵지만 제 책장에서 한 책을 추천해 드리자면 발터 뫼어스의 꿈꾸는 책들의 도시를 권합니다. 이 스토리는 상상력으로 가득차있고 최고로 섬세한 세계관을 가지고 있습니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I really love rock music. Rock just has this great energy and I love listening to how all of the instruments harmonize with one another. 저는 락을 정말 좋아합니다. 락에서 느껴지는 강한 에너지와 여러 악기들이 어우러진 소리를 듣는것을 좋아해요.

14. What are your hobbies?

I play electric guitar for fun. There are so many connections between playing musical instruments and drawing. It is really exciting whenever I find the connections. 취미로 일렉기타를 칩니다. 악기를 연주하는것과 그림을 그리는데는 연관점이 많은데 연관점을 찾을때 마다 굉장히 즐거워요.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I would say psychologist. Psychology was the major I looked into before deciding to go to art school. When I was in high school, I did not want to major in art because I was afraid I would not love drawing anymore when it became my job. Now, I am very happy I chose to go to art school. 아마 심리학자이지 싶어요. 심리학은 제가 미술 학교에 가기로 결정하기 전에 관심있어했던 과입니다. 고등학교때 직업으로 그림을 그리면 그리는것을 싫어하게 될까봐 취미로만 간직하고 전공으로 하고 싶어하지 않았어요. 제가 미술을 선택해서 굉장히 행복합니다.
