1. What's your story? Where are you from?

My name is Hyekang and I'm from South Korea. I am free-lancer illustration artist. I graduated from Sangmyoung University with a bachelor’s degree in Korean painting. I'm currently working with Digital Korean Painting. 안녕하세요. 저는 현재 한국에서 프리랜스 일러스트레이터로 활동 중인 혜강입니다. 한국화를 전공했고 디지털한국화를 주로 작업하고 있습니다.

2. Tell us about your artwork.

I draw daily life of girls who love Korean tradition, especially, Hanbok which is Korean traditional clothes. Also, I draw young girl’s imaginations that have ambiguous border between dreams and reality. When I was 10 years old, my mom bought me my first ‘Hanbok’. It had a pale pink coat ‘Jeogori’ (A coat of traditional Korean clothes ‘Hanbok’) and a skirt with little flower patterns on, for a school play. I loved the dress, because I thought I looked like a princess. I've, ever since then, been inspired by the beauty of traditional Korean clothing, hence my great interest in Hanbok. Which is why I said to myself; "when I grow up, I want to let the entire world know just how beautiful Korean traditional clothing can be". Every moment of my life is dedicated to achieve that dream. Rather than bringing up the past, I always strive to express this beauty in my own, present, way in order to create a unique piece of art that is in line with Korean traditions. 한국 전통의상인 한복을 좋아하고 전통을 사랑하는 소녀의 일상과, 꿈과 현실의 경계가 모호한 소녀들의 상상을 그립니다.어린시절, 초등학교 3학년때 엄마가 학예회 의상으로 연분홍저고리와 치마에 아기자기한 꽃무늬가 그려진 예쁜 한복을 사주신 기억이 있어요. 꼭 공주님 드레스같아 어릴 때 그 한복을 엄청 아꼈던 기억이 있는데 한복을 비롯한 한국전통에 대해 애착과 관심을 가지게 된 것도 그 무렵부터였던 것 같아요. 그래서 나중에 어른이 되면 꼭 한국전통의 미를 대중들에게 알리는 사람이 되어야겠다고 생각했어요. ‘전통’을 나만의 감성으로 작품에 녹이는 방법에 대해 고민하고 있으며, 과거를 그대로 옮겨오는 것이 아니라 현재의 시간 속에서 계속 변화되어가는 전통의 새로운 면을 작업을 통해 보여주고 싶어요.

3. What is your favorite medium and why?

My favorite tool is Photoshop, since it is convenient and easy to use. Information is highly accessible and I can work from everywhere. However, I usually combine software with hand painting, as software is usually limited to express certain natural feeling whereas painting by hand is not. 저는 주로 작업의 편의상 포토샵으로 작업을 하는 편이에요. 수정이 용이하고 작업공간의 제약이 없다는 점에서 디지털작업을 많은 장점이 있지만, 한국화특유의 물감의 번짐이나 한지의 질감을 표현하기에는 한계가 있기 때문에 최근에는 한국화수작업과 디지털 작업을 섞어서 작업하고 있어요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I always have a sketchbook with me in case of spontaneous ideas. When I get inspired immediately sketch the ideas down, so I can develop the image in Photoshop and ‘esquisse’ later on. I then draw based on the ‘esquisse’ image. The process is just like when I draw Korean paintings. First, I draw an outline, then I fill the outline with color and finally sign the drawing. 드로잉북을 항상 들고 다니면서 순간적으로 떠오르는 이미지나 감정, 아이디어들을 그림으로 기록해 두는 편이에요. 그리고 작업을 시작할 때 드로잉북에서 원하는 그림을 꺼내어 포토샵에서 구체적인 에스키스로 옮깁니다. 에스키스작업이 끝나면 이를 토대로 그림을 그리는데 작업과정은 한국화작업과정과 비슷해요. 외각 선을 먼저 그리고 그 위에 색을 채워나간 후 마지막에 낙관을 올리면 그림이 완성됩니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

A great part of my inspirations comes from historical documentaries, Korean Survivals and culture. My work is heavily based on Korean traditions as mentioned earlier, which is why I want to study about the subject and am always looking for new materials to learn from. These days, I search the fusion hanbok design because ‘Hanbok’ is in vogue among the young generation. Other than that, I get new ideas from my daily life, feelings, memories from my childhood, favorite movies, music, photos, art etc. There are many ways I get inspired. Inspiration comes, in other worlds, from my modern daily life, despite that I draw in a traditional way 작업에 영감을 받는 통로는 굉장히 다양해요.우선 작업주제와 관련해서는 한국 사극드라마, 영화, 한국의 유물, 문화재를 통해 영향을 많이 받는 편이에요. 제가 워낙에 전통에 관심이 많기도 하고 작업주제가 전통과 관련되다보니 전통에 대한 공부를 많이 해야할 필요성도 느껴 의식적으로 더 찾아보게 돼요. 최근에는 젊은 층 사이에서 한복패션이 유행하고 있기 때문에 생활한복 등의 퓨전한복디자인도 많이 찾아 보는 편이구요. 그 외에도 저의 일상에서 경험했던 일이나, 느꼈던 감정, 어린시절의 추억, 그리고 좋아하는 영화, 음악, 사진, 미술작품 등 다양한 경로를 통해 영감을 받아요. 전통을 주제로 그림을 그리긴 하지만 반드시 전통과 관련된 소재에서만 영감을 받는 편은 아니에요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

To me, painting means self-expression and self-healing. It is when I use my imagination, I truly get to know myself. I can become more positive and get energy through the creative activities because the painting is the one of the most important things in my life. Above all things, Painting is the reasons why I can live my life more honestly and always show me the way how to live my life. In addition, I get a lot of energy from people who like my work. 그림은 저에게는 자기표현의 수단이자 치유의 수단인 것 같아요. 그림을 통해 제 머릿속에 떠돌던 생각, 이미지를 꺼내 다듬고 정리해나가는 과정에서 저 자신에 대해서도 더 잘 이해하게 돼요. 그림은 어쨌든 저에게 있어서 가장 중요한 부분 중 하나이기 때문에, 창작을 통해 스스로 많은 에너지를 얻어요. 무엇보다도 제 자신이 조금 더 솔직한 삶을 살 수 있도록, 길을 잃지 않도록 해주는 게 그림인 것 같아요. 제 그림을 본 많은 분들이 공감해주시고 좋아해주시는 것에 많은 힘을 얻기도 하구요.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in Korean painting in Sangmyung University in Korea. After graduation, I worked at Museum, regarding education. That position helped me a lot on my work now. 한국 상명대학교에서 한국화를 전공했어요. 졸업 후에는 박물관에서 교육관련 일을 했었는데 그 경험이 작업에도 많은 도움이 되었어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

First of all, I would like to study about Korean painting deeply. I hope, after 5 years, I could add the high rate for hand-painting parts more on my work get more professional working skills than the digital skills. I think it would be good to show the deeper vibe on my work to people. Secondly, I want to have my own working place to fill with my paintings and items related with tradition that I collected. Also, I would like to open the Korean painting class based on the lots of know-how that I learned. Fourth, I would like to make some products with my design. I had my own goods like stickers, posts and others and also sell them now but I hope I could make various products such as interior pieces and clothes beyond stationery. Someday, I image that I wear the ‘Hanbok’ I designed and walk on the street. Plus, I’d like to take pottery class and make a ceramics with my own painting. Well, I think I have so many things that I want to learn. I am not sure I could achieve all my plans within 5 years. 우선 한국화에 대한 공부를 더 깊게 하고 싶은 마음이 크기 때문에 5년 후에는 디지털작업 외에도 한국화 수작업을 늘려서 표현의 폭이 커지고 작업에 깊이가 더 생겼으면 좋겠어요. 두번째로는 작업실을 차려서 제 그림들과 함께 제가 수집한 전통과 관련된 소품들로 차곡차곡 채워나가고 싶어요. 또 그동안 터득한 작업 노하우를 바탕으로 한국화 수업을 운영하고 싶어요.세 번째로는 일러스트북을 내고 싶어요. 지금보다 작업양이 더 많이 모이면, 제가 직접 디자인한 책을 만들고 싶어요네 번째로는 제 작업을 다양한 상품으로 만들고 싶어요. 지금도 엽서, 스티커 등의 소소한 굿즈는 만들어 판매하고 있지만, 앞으로는 문구류 뿐만 아니라 인테리어 소품, 의류 등 다양한 상품들을 만들어보고 싶어요. 제 그림 속에 등장하는 한복을 직접 제작해서 입고 다니고 싶기도 하고, 도예를 배워서 제가 직접 제작한 도자기에 그림을 그려 완성해보고 싶기도 해요. 배우고 싶은 게 너무 많은데 5년 안에 다 가능할지는 모르겠네요

9. What about in ten?

10 years later, I wish I could get my own story and aura to play with on my work as an artist. I don’t want to lose my own feeling in 10 years. And I want everyone to know of my artist name draws the tradition with modern feeling. For this, I have to be diligent and I also have a plan to do social activities for tradition to develop it continuously because the goal of my work is to let people know how beautiful the tradition is and make them have the new realization of it. I have no specific forms and plans about it but I think it would be great to hang out with people who are in the various fields like music, pottery, dance and design besides the art. 10년 후에는 작가로서 저만의 스토리와 아우라를 확실히 가지고 싶어요. 10년이 지난 후에도 지금의 감성을 잃지 않고 전통을 현대적감성으로 그리는 한국화 작가로 이름을 알리고 싶어요. 그러기 위해서는 작업을 게을리 해서는 안 되겠죠. 그리고 제 작업의 목적이 사람들로 하여금 전통에 대한 아름다움을 알게 하고 새로운 인식을 갖게 하는 것이기 때문에 전통을 지속적으로 발전시킬 수 있는 사회적 활동을 하고 싶어요. 그게 어떤 형태일지는 아직 구체적으로 떠오르지 않지만, 미술 외에 음악, 도예, 무용, 디자인 등 다양한 분야의 사람들과 함께 할 수 있다면 정말 좋을 것 같아요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope many people have the precious mind and pride about our history and tradition through my works. Also, I wish they could feel the new value that they didn’t recognize in the past and set the mind to protect and save our historical tradition in Korea. 많은 사람들이 내 그림을 통해 전통에 대한 아름다움과 가치를 새롭게 알게 되고 지켜나가고자 하는 마음을 가지게 되면 좋겠어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

All sweet things like cake, chocolate, some moist and soft cookies and pudding. 달콤하고 부드러운 모든 것.. 케잌, 초콜렛, 촉촉한 쿠키. 푸딩

12. Favourite book?

Harry Potter series, the novels written by Kaori Ekuni, ‘The nation of lost things’ written by Kakuta Mitsuyo 해리포터, 에쿠니가오리의 소설, 카쿠타 미츠요의 ‘잃어버린 것들의 나라’

13. Favourite genre of music?

It depends on the vibe and situation. I usually listen all kind of music genre. Mostly, I usually listen deep house, jazz, synthpop and jazz hiphop music. However, I listen dup-step music a lot when I go to work. 상황에 따라 듣는 음악이 달라 여러 장르를 다 듣는 편인데 주로 딥하우스, 재즈, 신스팝, 재즈힙합 장르를 좋아하는 편이에요. 회사다닐 당시에는 덥스텝 음악도 많이 들었어요.

14. What are your hobbies?

Drawing, going to the art museum, eating some snacks while I watch movies, games. 그림그리기. 전시관람, 영화보면서 군것질하기, 게임.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Maybe would I be a kindergarten teacher or the teacher at public schools. 유치원교사 아니면 학교교사가 되지 않았을까.
