1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi. I'm Yeono. I was born in Seoul, Korea and I am studying architecture in Busan. I wrote a book about the urban landscape of Korea and I am writing articles and pictures in travel magazines and architectural magazines. I work also as an architect. 안녕하세요. 연오입니다. 저는 한국의 서울에서 태어났고 부산에서 건축을 공부했습니다. 한국의 도시풍경을 그린 그림으로 책을 썼고 여행잡지나 건축잡지에 글과 그림을 기고하고 있습니다. 물론 건축가로서의 일도 병행하고 있습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like to observe the city where I live now. I like to express it with drawings. And I also like drawing people. 나는 지금 제가 살고 있는 도시의 모습을 관찰하는 것을 좋아하고 그것을 그림으로 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다. 그리고 인물 드로잉도 좋아합니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Pen drawing mainly. I work there with watercolors or Photoshop. Pen is the simplest and easiest material, but there are many ways to express it. I am interested in creating new lines of feeling. 펜드로잉을 주로 합니다. 거기에 수채 물감이나 포토샵으로 작업을 합니다. 펜은 가장 간단하고 손쉬운 재료이지만 표현할 수 있는 방법은 무궁무진합니다. 새로운 느낌의 선들을 만들어 내는 것에 관심이 많습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

If I have inspiring landscapes, I draw them on the spot or take pictures and work in the studio. I enjoy the process of creating a new landscape through the hands. 영감을 주는 풍경이 있으면 현장에서 직접 보고 그리거나 사진을 찍어서 작업실에서 작업합니다. 눈으로 보았던 풍경이 손을 통해 새롭게 태어나는 과정을 즐깁니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Inspiring my work is the landscape of the city where people have lived for a long time and the lives of the people who live there. It is somewhat consistent with another career interest, an architect. 제 작업에 영감을 주는 것은 오랜 시간동안 사람들이 살아오고 있는 도시의 풍경과 그곳에서 살고 있는 사람들의 삶입니다. 건축가라는 또 다른 직업의 관심과도 어느 정도 일치합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I am also an architect. The painting I draw also expresses my view of the city. The cityscape is my eternal interest and I want to actively intervene in it. Painting is one of the best things I can do and I want to share the city we live in with everyone. 저는 건축가이기도 합니다. 제가 그리는 그림은 도시를 보는 저의 관점을 표현하기도 합니다. 도시풍경은 영원한 저의 관심사이자 그것에 적극적으로 개입하고 싶은 대상이기도 합니다. 그림은 제가 가장 잘 할 수 있는 것 중에 하나이고 그것을 통해 우리가 살고 있는 도시를 모두와 공유하고 싶습니다.

7. Where did you study?

I studied architecture at Dong-A University in Busan, Korea. But before that, I wanted to become a cartoonist. 저는 한국의 부산 동아대학교에서 건축을 공부했습니다. 하지만 그전에 꿈은 만화가가 되는 것이었습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

Perhaps I will continue to paint and write while continuing to work on architecture. And I want to write a few more books. 아마 건축일을 계속하면서 그림을 그리고 글을 쓰는 일을 계속하고 있을 겁니다. 그리고 책을 몇 권 더 쓰고 싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

I'm going around the city with cameras and sketchbooks. 카메라와 스케치북을 들고 도시의 이곳저곳을 돌아다니고 있을 겁니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to draw pictures and write not only in Korea but also around the world. I want to share the interest and affection of the city with everyone. 한국뿐만이 아니라 전 세계 도시를 다니면서 그림을 그리고 글을 쓰고 싶습니다. 도시에 대한 관심과 애정을 모든 사람들과 공유하고 싶습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

All kinds of Korean food. I also like Italian food. 모든 종류의 한국음식. 이태리 음식도 좋아합니다.

12. Favourite book?

I love history books. There is a lot of interest in how the people of the past lived. And I like books that show the artist's deep insights. In recent years, novelist Kim Hoon's "bicycle trip" remembers much. 역사책을 좋아합니다. 과거의 사람들이 어떻게 살았었는지에 대한 관심이 많습니다. 그리고 작가의 깊은 통찰을 보여주는 책을 좋아합니다. 최근에는 소설가 김훈의 「자전거여행」이 기억에 많이 남습니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like music of almost all genres. I also like pop and rock music, Korean traditional music and classical music. Jazz is one of my favorite music of course 거의 모든 장르의 음악을 좋아합니다. 팝이나 락음악, 한국의 전통음악과 클래식도 좋아하는 편입니다. 재즈도 물론 가장 좋아하는 음악중 하나입니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

I listen to music, travel, and watch books. I had tango for about 10 years. 여행, 음악을 듣고 책을 봅니다. 탱고를 십년정도 췄습니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I think I would have been doing architectural work, and if not, I would be doing architectural, artistic, and cultural work 건축일을 계속하고 있었을 거고 그게 아니더라도 건축, 예술, 문화관련 일을 하고 있을 것 같습니다.
