1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I am Stella Park, a freelance illustrator from Seoul, Korea. I love drawing with coloured pencils in a warm space. 안녕하세요. 저는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터 스텔라박(Stella Park)입니다. 따뜻한 공간에서 차분히 앉아 색연필로 그리는 것을 좋아합니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like to draw what I see while traveling or what I find in everyday life. I think it's great to draw a landmark that I saw on a trip too. But I found happiness in the way people live, in an ordinary way, in the little things that make up those people. Our daily lives feel normal, but I wanted to find something special in our lives. So I started drawing what I saw and felt in my daily life and on my travels. 저는 새로운 경험을 할 수 있는 여행도 좋아하며 편히 거닐 수 있는 일상도 좋아합니다. 그래서 제가 보고 느낀 것이 작은 것일지라도 그림으로 남기고자 하는 생각이 들었습니다. 여행지에서 볼 수 있는 랜드마크를 그리는 것도 좋지만 저는 새로운 곳에서 만나는 사람들의 모습, 그들을 이루는 작은 풍경들에서 행복을 느꼈습니다. 서울에서 살아가는 일상도 어찌보면 매일이 비슷하지만 그렇기에 기억 속에서 너무나도 쉽게 잊혀지는게 아쉬웠습니다. 그래서 제가 여행에서, 그리고 일상에서 보고 느낀 것을 그림으로 담아 조금 더 따뜻하게, 그리고 특별하게 남기고 싶었습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like to draw with coloured pencils. (Of course, other tools are very good, too.) When you draw with coloured pencils, you can see a variety of lines and expressions depending on our feelings. And depending on the thickness of the colored pencils, the feel of the paintings varies a lot. So, I think it is attractive because I can draw more slowly and calmly when I use coloured pencils. 색연필로 그리는 것을 좋아합니다. 물론 그림을 그릴 수 있는 모든 도구들과 디지털 방식도 훌륭합니다. 그러나 색연필을 사용해 그림을 그릴 때 우리의 감정에 따라 천차만별로 다양해지는 그림을 볼 수 있습니다. 동일한 사물을 그리더라도 당시의 내 기분에 따라 선의 굵기나 선명도도 영향을 받아 사뭇 다른 그림이 되기도 합니다. 마치 감정의 거울처럼 말이에요. 특히나 색연필 심의 굵기에 따라 깔끔하게 그려질 때도 있지만 때로는 삐져나가기도 하죠. 그렇기에 조금 더 천천히, 차분하게 그림을 그려나가는 색연필이 매력적이라 생각합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

If it was a travel, I draw reference to the picture I took. And if it was my daily life, I remember or take notes of the moment that I want to draw and then draw with colored pencils. But colors don't paint in real colors. I change the colors based on my feelings. And I also change the colors to make the artwork looks more harmonious. (That doesn't change all of the colors in the original, it's part of it.) Then, I scan the artwork or take a picture and use Photoshop to remove the blemishes on the paper or the powder of the colour pencils. Then the artwork is finished. 그리고자 하는 것이 여행이라면 제가 찍은 사진들을 참고해 그립니다. 그리고 제가 일상에서 그리고 싶은 것을 발견했다면 메모를 하거나 기억을 한 후 색연필로 바로 그림을 그립니다. 저는 제가 느낀 것들을 그림에 담아내기 위해 색상에 신경을 많이 씁니다. 그래서 실제의 색을 그대로 그리기 보다는 제가 전하고자 하는 감정이나 그림의 분위기에 따라 조화롭게 색을 변경해 그립니다. 그리고선 스캔이나 사진을 찍은 후 포토샵을 통해 종이의 흠이나 색연필 가루 등을 지우는 조정을 거쳐 그림이 완성됩니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I most inspired by travel and daily life. I often feel warm and special in everything that I see on my walk. So that's why I think I'm inspired when I find something special in the warmth of travel and daily life. 저는 여행에서 가장 영감을 받습니다. 그리고 일상에서도 영감을 받아요. 저는 매일 걷는 길이라도 가끔 새로움을 느끼고 그것이 곧 특별함으로 느껴질 때가 있어요. 그래서 여행에서 느낀 모든 것과 일상에서 마주하는 따뜻한 모습들에서 영감을 받습니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

For me, art makes my memories more beautiful. And through the art I drew, it makes people feel various emotions. So I think it allows people to see the life they live in more warmly. 저에게 있어 예술이란 제가 가진 추억을 보다 아름답게 만들어 준다고 생각합니다. 그리고 그러한 추억을 통해 만들어진 예술 작품은 여러 사람들에게 다양한 감정들을 불러일으키곤 합니다. 그래서 예술을 통해 사람들이 그들이 살고 있는 삶을 보다 더 따뜻하게 볼 수 있게끔 한다고 생각합니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in Media Design at Dongduk Women's University. I learned various design such as graphic design, UI, 3D, typography, video design, and all that. And I had many experiences and met good people. 동덕여자대학교 미디어디자인을 전공하였습니다. 이 전공을 통해 그래픽 디자인, 일러스트, UI, 3D, 타이포그래피, 영상 디자인 등 다양한 디자인을 배울 수 있었습니다. 돌이켜 생각해보면 학교를 통해 많은 경험들을 할 수 있었고, 다양한 사람들을 만나 성장할 수 있었던 것 같습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years from now, I think I'm going to travel around the world to draw my own illustration book. Maybe I'm going to draw illustrations of everything I've seen in my travels. So I want to make many people feel cozy through my illustration. And I have a plan to make my artworks into a variety of products So I want more people to approach my artworks comfortably. 5년 안에 저는 다양한 나라를 돌아다니며 저만의 일러스트 북을 위한 그림을 그리고 있을 것이라 생각합니다. 제가 그곳에서 한 소소한 일상까지 그림으로 담아 많은 사람들이 보다 편안히 다가갈 수 있는 책을 내고 싶습니다. 그리고 제 일러스트들을 여러 상품들로 제작해 많은 경험을 쌓고 작품에 대한 접근성도 높일 계획입니다.

9. What about in ten?

For now, there are so many I want to do. And there's a lot of thinking, too. So I want to be a wiser and a calmer person through experience of 10 years. So I hope such experiences will be reflected in my illustrations. Also, I will always be a growing illustrator. 지금의 저는 하고 싶은 것이 너무나 많고 생각 또한 많습니다. 그래서 10년 후에는 제가 많은 경험들을 통해 보다 차분한 사람이 되어있길 바랍니다. 그리고 그러한 저의 성장이 제 일러스트에도 반영이 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 안주하는 사람이 아닌 꾸준히 성장하는 일러스트레이터가 되어있을 것이라 생각합니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to communicate with various people in many countries through my illustrations. And I want to be an artist who gives heart-warming to many people by publishing my own illustration book. 제 일러스트를 통해 전 세계의 다양한 사람들과 진심 어린 소통을 하고 싶습니다. 그리고 시간이 지나 많은 경험들이 쌓이면 저만의 특색이 담긴 일러스트 북을 만들어 다양한 사람들에게 따뜻함을 선물하고 싶습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

All the breads and sweets, and Tteokbokki. 모든 빵들과 디저트류, 그리고 내 사랑 떡볶이.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 제인 오스틴의 오만과 편견

13. Favourite genre of music?

Jazz and Old pop. I don't care if it's K-music or pop. If it's old music, I really like it. 재즈와 올드팝을 좋아합니다. 특히 한국음악이든 팝이든 옛날 음악이라면 좋아합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Listening to music, and looking around the interior shop or grocery. 음악 듣기. 그리고 요즘 생긴 소소한 취미는 인테리어 샵이나 대형 마트 구경하기.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

It's a very difficult question for me. I have never thought about it. I need some time to think about it. 이것에 대해 깊게 생각해 본 적이 없어 매우 어렵게 느껴지는 질문이네요. 조금 더 생각할 시간이 필요한 것 같아요. 그래도 아마 그림과 관련된 일을 하고 있을 거라 생각합니다.
