1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I am Jee-ook Choi. I majored in fine arts, and I did video installations, performances and now I am a freelance illustrator from the South Korea. 1. 당신의 이야기를 들려주세요. 어디서 왔나요? 안녕하세요, 저는 최지욱입니다. 저는 순수미술을 전공하면서 영상, 설치, 퍼포먼스들을 해왔고, 지금은 서울에서 프리랜스 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like art with complex emotions. I prefer metaphorical representation, I am attracted to surrealistic things that is out of everyday life. 2. 당신의 미학에 대해 들려주세요. 복합적인 감정을 담은 것을 좋아해요. 은유적인 재현을 선호하고, 일상을 벗어난 것, 초현실적인 것에 매력을 느낍니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I mainly work with computers. That way, I can feel free to try new ones easily. It's good to be able to constantly change while I working, without having to plan completely from the beginning. Most of all, it's best to be ready to work just by turning the power on. 3. 당신이 가장 좋아하는 작업 툴은 무엇인가요? 이유는요? 저는 주로 컴퓨터로 작업합니다. 그로인해 새로운 시도들을 부담없이 할 수 있고, 처음부터 완벽히 계획하지 않고 작업하는 도중 계속 변화시켜 볼 수 있다는 점이 좋아요. 무엇보다 전원을 켜는 것만으로도 일 할 준비가 끝난다는 점이 가장 좋습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Sometimes I write a note and I illust some favorite elements among them again, and sometimes I start an illustrate with a line without any plans. I care about composing and arranging the frame, and there are many cases during sketching. When painting colors, I try to express -well the nuances I imagined when I sketched. 4. 당신의 예술적 창작 과정은 어떻게 되나요? 낙서나 메모를 하다가 마음에 드는 것을 다시 옮기는 때도 있고, 아무 계획 없이 선을 하나 긋는 것에서 출발할 때도 있어요. 화면을 구성하고 배치하는 것에 신경을 쓰는 편이라, 스케치하는 동안 많은 경우의 수가 생깁니다. 색을 칠할 때는 스케치 할 때 상상한 뉘앙스들을 잘 표현하려고 노력하는 편이에요.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Everything I see, hear, and think is the material of my work. But usually I often find the material I want to draw when I spread a piece of paper and just scribble on it anything. So I start the day by writing a daily diary. 5. 어떤 것들이 당신의 작업에 영감을 주나요? 제가 보고, 듣고, 생각하는 것들은 모두 작업의 재료가 됩니다. 보통은 종이를 펴고 아무것이나 끄적이고 있을 때 그리고 싶은 소재들을 발견하는 경우가 많아서, 매일 잡다한 일기와 메모를 쓰는 것으로 하루를 시작해요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art makes it possible to understand a less logical world in a less logical way. And because I draw images in own my way, it is finally a process of building my world. Art makes me more active in interpreting emotions and phenomena, and allows me to be subjective enough. 6. 예술은 당신의 삶에서 어떤 역할을 하나요? 그리고 당신이 세상을 보는 관점에 어떤 변화를 주나요? 예술은 논리적으로 맞춰지지 않는 세상을, 덜 논리적인 방식으로도 이해할 수 있게 해줍니다. 나만의 관점으로 그림을 그려내기 때문에, 결국 제 세계를 구축하는 과정이에요. 예술은 제가 더 적극적으로 감정이나 현상에 대해 해석하도록 만들고, 충분히 주관적일 수 있게 해줍니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored fineart at Korea National University of Arts 7. 어디서 공부했나요? 한국예술종합학교에서 fineart를 전공했습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

I have thought that someday I would like to be able to do my work from an agency in Iceland. After five years, I hope to see snow-capped mountains and craters there. 8. 5년 후에 당신은 어떤 모습일거라 생각하나요? 에이전시에서 일하고 있을까요? 아이슬랜드에 있는 에이전시에 가보고 싶다는 생각을 막연히 하고 있습니다. 5년 후에는 그 곳에서 눈덮인 산과 분화구를 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.

9. What about in ten?

Maybe I will be living in another country. It is my long wish to live in a warm, long day. 9. 10년 후에는요? 아마 다른 나라에서 살고 있을 것이라고 생각합니다. 따듯하고, 낮이 긴곳에서 사는 것이 꿈이에요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

What I want to accomplish is the life itself that is close to art. Life that practices art as everyday life. 10. 당신의 예술로 무엇을 성취하고 싶은가요? 예술과 밀접한 삶 그 자체를 원해요. 일상으로서의 예술을 실천하는 삶.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Pizza, sushi, grilled vegetables, Indian curry, natty, rice noodles, steak…. 11. 자, 우리에게 당신의 인간적인 부분을 조금 들려주세요. 당신이 제일 좋아하는 음식은 무엇인가요? 피자, 스시, 구운야채, 인도식 커리, 낫토, 쌀국수 스테이크….

13. Favourite genre of music?

My taste is completely electronica. I always listen to the genre when I working or not working. I like all collected sounds, artificial machine sounds, and elaborately woven rhythms. 13. 제일 좋아하는 음악장르는? 완전히 일렉트로닉이요. 작업할때도, 작업하지 않을 때도 항상 들어요. 채집된 소리, 인위적인 기계음, 정교하게 짜여진 리듬, 모두를 좋아합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Drinking with the comfortable people. 14. 취미는 무엇이에요? 편한 사람들과 어울려 술마시고 노는 것.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I like alcohol and music, so I would have become a bartender. 15. 만약 당신이 아티스트가 아니었다면 어떤 일을 했을까요? 술을 좋아하니 바텐더가 되었을것같아요.
