1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, I'm Jinhwa Jang (aka ottershapedoden). I was born in Seoul, Korea, and grew up in Korea and China. For now, I'm doing a summer internship and taking a comics workshop in Seoul. 안녕하세요. 저는 장진화, ottershapedoden 입니다. 저는 한국 서울에서 태어났고, 청소년 시절을 중국 상하이에서 보냈습니다. 서울에서 인턴십을 하고 만화 워크샵도 들으며 올해 여름을 보내고 있습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

My interests, theme and the way of expression in terms of art change from time to time, so it's in a state of flux. Lately, I've been using limited color palettes, intense textures, chroma, or contrast and I think I was influenced by working with Risograph. 저는 때마다 관심사, 주제, 표현방식이 다르기 때문에 유동적인 것 같아요. 최근 제한된 몇가지 색상만으로 채색하거나, 강렬한 패턴, 채도, 대비를 많이 사용했습니다. 일년 전쯤 시작한 리소그래프 작업에 영향을 받아서인것 같습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I prefer working in digital because it's handy. I can bring my laptop and Wacom everywhere to work. I also like the accidental color combination of Risograph. 디지털 아트와 리소그래프를 좋아합니다. 노트북과 타블렛만 챙기면 어디서든 디지털 작업을 할 수 있고.리소프린트 했을때의 선명한 색들의 우연한 조합이 좋기 때문입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I try to collect image references from the Internet or my everyday life as much as I can. They help me a lot because I watch them all the working process. 평소에 인터넷이나 일상생활에서 이미지 레퍼런스를 모으려고 노력합니다. 작업 할 때 여러 이미지 자료를 보기 때문에 많은 도움이 됩니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

My dreams, fantasy, photographs, cityscape, music, games, and especially, amazing works by great artists. 꿈, 공상, 사진, 도시, 음악, 게임, 그리고 여러 아티스트들의 멋진 작품들이 작업을 완성하는데 언제나 좋은 영감과 힘이 됩니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It often makes me nervous because it is my job and an important part of me. Recently I've started thinking not only how to express myself but also how my works influence the world. 저는 작업때문에 자주 불안함을 느끼는데, 제 직업이고 또 저의 중요한 일부분이라서 그렇습니다. 저의 작업물으로 어떻게 자기 표현 할지 뿐만 아니라, 제 작업이 어떻게 세상에 영향을 미칠지 생각하게 됐습니다.

7. Where did you study?

I'm majoring in Illustration at School of Visual Arts. School of Visual Arts 에서 삽화를 전공하고 있습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Working in the field of creative arts. Sorry, it's not specific. 창작 분야에서 일하고 있을것 같습니다. 하지만 더 구체적으로 떠올리기가 힘드네요.

9. What about in ten?

Keep working? 계속 그림을 그릴 것 같습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I wish to be fearless of learning new things and rather enjoy it. 새롭게 배우는것을 두려워하지 않고 도리어 그것을 즐기는 사람이 된다면 정말 좋겠습니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I can't come up with anything. Well, I dreamed to be a singer when I was really small. 도무지 떠오르지가 않네요. 가수가 되고싶다는 생각을 어렸을때 종종 했습니다!
