1. What's your story? Where are you from?

My name is Ji eun Lee, and I’m from South Korea. I’ve started creating art when I was 9 years old. I studied jewelry and fiber art in college, but I realized that I’m not really good at making something because I’m not very careful and the fields I studied need perfect precision. Even though it wasn’t very successful with my major, I didn’t stop drawing in college. After graduate the college, I’ve been teaching kids at the art academy I was in since 9 years old, also working as a freelance illustrator. 안녕하세요. 한국에 살고 있는 이지은입니다. 저는 9살 때 미술을 시작했어요. 대학 전공은 금속 공예와 섬유 공예에요. 대학교에 다니면서 만들기엔 소질이 없다는걸 알았어요. 그래서 학교에 다니면서 꾸준히 그림을 그렸어요. 지금은 9살 때 그림을 배웠던 미술학원에서 매주 금요일마다 아이들을 가르치며 졸업 후에는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 일하고 있어요.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Mostly I draw actors, artists and models. One day, I really liked a snapshot from a movie, from that reason, I’ve been drawing actors. Also, looking at my favorite artists’ work made me want to draw the artists. They are all protagonists in my drawing, from my enthusiasm. At first, to focus on the figures, the background was pretty simple, but now, I’m more interested in filling background which makes the work more connected and storytelling. 제가 그리는 인물은 주로 영화의 등장인물, 화가 ,모델이에요. 영화를 보다가 캡쳐 한 사진이 마음에 들어 그리기 시작했고, 화가의 그림을 보다가 화가를 그리게 됐죠. 그들 모두는 내 그림에서 주인공이고, 저는 애정을 담아 그려요. 초반에는 인물에 집중하기 위해 배경을 최대한 단순화 했지만 요즘은 배경을 따로 작업하고 있어요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Colored pencil and acrylic paint are favorite medium I mainly use. It’s really easy to depict small details, so in my opinion, colored pencil is the most appropriate tool to draw the human face. With acrylic paint, I use it for the background or a simple still life 저는 색연필과 포스터물감을 자주 써요. 색연필은 제가 가진 미술 재료 중에 사람의 얼굴을 그리는데 가장 적합한 도구라고 생각해요. 포스터물감은 배경이나 단순한 정물화를 그리는데 사용해요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Before start to work, I look for some pictures because mainly my works are based on them. Even though it’s not from photograph that I took, by being transferred on the paper, it becomes mine finally. When I use colored pencil, I draw without any thumbnail or base sketch different with when I use acrylic paint. When it’s done, I scan my work to work on more on Photoshop. 저는 그림을 그리기 전에 사진을 찾아봐요. 보고 그리는 작업이 주를 이루기 때문이죠. 색연필을 사용할 땐 스케치를 따로 하지 않고 들어가요. 물감을 사용할 때는 스케치를 하죠. 완성된 그림을 스캔하고 마지막으로 포토샵으로 추가 작업을 해요.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Watching movies and photography inspires me a lot. They are perfectly composed art works by the director or artist with their passion in it, and I love reproducing them expressing with my style. Also my favorite artist is David Hockney. All of his artworks are amazing, and each pieces are inspiring me all the time. He’s been making art during all his life, and I really like his great passion in art and want to be like him. 영화와 사진 그리고 데이비드 호크니와 마티스 , 앤디워홀 외 여러 화가들이에요. 영화나 사진은 감독에 의해 색부터 구도까지 완벽히 짜여진 작품이에요. 또 여러 스텝과 배우의 열정도 녹아있는데 저는 그걸 제 도구와 스타일로 그려내는 것이 즐거워요. 데이비드 호크니는 제가 가장 사랑하는 화가에요. 한 사람이 이렇게 멋진 작품을 하나도 아니고, 수없이 많이 그렸다는 게 놀랍죠. 저는 호크니가 물감으로 그리던, 색연필로 그리던 전부 좋아요. 평생 그림만 그렸고, 앞으로도 그림만 그릴 것 같은 그의 열정이 좋죠. 호크니 같은 예술가가 되고 싶어요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Making art, now became my routine in my life like eating and sleeping. I hated few colors especially orange, purple and green when I was younger, and I remember I never used them before. However, I’ve found each different color’s beauty and all they have good combination with other colors, and now, I can draw more various paintings with more creative color combinations. Since I’ve realized about different color combinations, I’m trying to take few minutes to take photo when I find new and good color scheme in real life. 잠을 자거나 밥을 먹는 것처럼 그림은 제게 일상이자 일부에요. 꼭 해야 하고 꼭 하고 싶은 것이죠. 예전에 저는 주황 보라 초록 이런색을 싫어해서 크레파스엔 이 색들이 새것처럼 남아있었어요. 그러나 많은 그림을 보면서 색마다 가진 아름다움을 찾았어요. 그래서 더 다양한 그림을 그릴 수 있게 됐죠. 그 후 좋은 색감을 보면 기록하려고 하는 습관이 있어요. 주차장 기둥 페인트 색조합이 마음에 들었다면 잠깐 서서 촬영하는거죠.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in fiber crafts and metal crafts at Dankook University. 저는 단국 대학교에서 금속 공예와 섬유 공예를 공부했어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I’m going to publish my book with my drawings and paintings which my favorite people, places and my stories are in, and at that time, I’ll be a famous illustrator who works with many companies. To make that happen, I will keep my passion about art all the time, and push myself little more. 제 그림으로 가득한 책을 만들었을거에요. 그 안엔 제가 좋아하는 사람들과, 좋아하는 공간 그리고 이야기가 담겨있죠. 지금보다 유명해져서 많은 회사랑 작업하고 있을거에요. 이런 일이 일어나기 위해 저는 지금보다 더 그림에 열정을 가지고 노력해야겠죠.

9. What about in ten?

In ten years, I hope that I can have my own design company which I can work with people in. so that we can make good designs and products together which would be little hard to do just myself. The reason is I think working with people is challenge, so I could learn from that, and also we could make better quality of results by motivating and inspiring each other. 10년 후 다른 사람들과 함께 작업할 수 있는 디자인 회사를 만들고싶어요. 혼자 하는 것보다 같이함으로써 더 좋은 디자인이 나올거에요. 다른 사람과 함께 일하는 것은 새로운 일이고, 그걸 통해 배우는 것도 많을거에요. 서로에게 동기를 부여하고 영감을 줌으로써 좋은 결과를 만들거에요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to inspire and motive people with my art in many ways. One day, someone told me that she started drawing after she saw my works on Instagram. I was really proud of myself from that, it also motivated me to focus on myself and works. It’s going to be perfect if I can keep motivating people with my work. 그림을 한동안 안그리다가 인스타그램에서 제 그림을 보고 다시 시작한다는 얘기를 들은 적 있어요. 또 누군가에게 그런 시작점이 된다면 더없이 행복할거에요.

I like pizza these days. 요즘은 피자

Harry Potter series. 해리포터

13. Favourite genre of music?

Pop and Electronic. I like Maroon 5 and Aquilo. Also Akdon Musician who is a group of a Korean musicians. 팝이랑 일렉트로니카 장르를 좋아해요. 가수는 maroon 5와 Aquilo. 한국 가수중에는 악동뮤지션을 좋아해요.

14. What are your hobbies?

My hobby is collecting toys. Actually, Toy Story is one of my favorite movies, and I got a gift when I was in high school, and it was Woody and Buzz from the movie. Since then, I’ve started finding Disney’s toys and vintage Barbie toys, and few of them are same old as me, and some are older. It’s a little funny that now I have more toys than when I was a kid. I love that I can keep the feeling of child by watching them. 어릴 때 영화 토이스토리를 좋아했는데, 고등학교 때 친구에게 토이스토리 우디와 버즈를 선물받았어요. 그 후로 쭉 인형을 모으고있어요. 주로 디즈니 장난감과 빈티지 바비에요. 빈티지 바비는 주로 제가 태어난 1990년대에 만들어진 것들이라 저와 태어난 해가 같은 인형도있어요. 어릴 때 보다 장난감이 더 많아졌죠!
