1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi! I’m Lucy and I work as a freelance Illustrator. I live in Berlin, but I’m originally from southern Germany. I love to travel with my dog and would call myself a digital nomad. Right now, I’m trying to find a VW bus to go on a road trip all the way to India next year.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like it minimal. Not a lot of colors, not a lot happening in one picture. Simplicity speaks for itself - less is more.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

For a very long time I wasn’t convinced of digital sketching. Can you believe it? I was so much in love with the structure of paper and the symbiosis of it with different colors. At some point in university there was no way out. Now I would say: Sketching on my IPad brings illustrating to a whole other level - I love it! I love both.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I don’t work as a full-time freelance Illustrator, which gives me the freedom (and time) to only start sketching when I really feel a creative flow - the moment where sketching is all I want to do. It’s somehow meditating as well. I totally dive into an artwork and switch off everything around me. Most of the time my pencil guides me. Colors and ideas are the result of everyday life experiences, people I met, colors I’ve seen, music I’ve listened to. It just happens. Of course it can be different with commissioned work. Some days work just has to be done.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I think my work is mostly an expression of the things that I think about, that move me, that make me feel. Good and bad. So I carry some thought or experience, and at some point I need to let it go, or give it some place to stay. This place is an illustration. Like I said, work can be inspired by so many things like music or people but I guess it’s a hodgepodge of several things that it can’t even be defined.

Some artist that I really love and that are a huge inspiration: Liza Rusalskaya, Febin Raj, Sara Andreasson, Simon Prades, Camila Rosa, Lucas Wakamatsu and so many more!

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

Art has always played a huge role in my life. My grandma was very passionate about art and took me to museums and exhibitions very early and regularly. She told me about classic artists and also taught me how to use colors, combine them and somehow was my personal teacher. She always supported me to take an artistic path in life.

Art is for me the most beautiful form of communication. It explains so much without words.

7. Where did you study?

I studied graphic and communication design in Cologne, Germany. After finishing my Bachelor I thought about a masters degree in illustration in Berlin, which is one of the reasons I moved there about a year ago. I never started my masters degree but it was the right decision anyway.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I would love to get more into editorial illustrations. My goal is to focus more on my work as in illustrator, network more, take more chances. I see myself being a full time illustrator.

9. What about in ten?

My Mum is a teacher and when I was younger I thought this is the job I never want to have. Now I sometimes catch myself thinking about me being an art or design teacher at schools or universities - and it doesn’t feel that wrong anymore. Somehow I feel that I want to support young artists, take their fears, and take part in their creative process and development.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

Art is supposed to make you feel something. If that happens, that’s all I want. It’s also a transmitter, especially talking about social or political problems, it can build a bridge, and make a complex topic so easily understandable. I would love to achieve that with my art.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I’m vegan and I have to be honest: I love fast food. I could always eat a Burger with lots of fries and chilli mayonnaise.

12. Favourite book?

I started and finished reading the book „Olga“ by Bernhard Schlink on one day, I just couldn’t put it aside. The story catched me like crazy and I had to cry a lot at the end. It’s definitely one of my favourite books.

13. Favourite genre of music?

As a Berliner a very cliché answer: I like Techno! But at home I listen to a lot of rap, trap and hip hop. For sketching I love classic music because I can concentrate more - also something I learned from my grandma.

14. What are your hobbies?

I love film photography and to travel with my dog. I get restless staying in one place for too long. 15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I have no idea. I’m not good at things that are not creative or are very rational. I guess I would work at an animal shelter haha.
