1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello, my name is Moon Dajung, and I'm painting under the name of dal. 'dal' means Moon in Korean. I would like to introduce myself as a person who likes painting very much. I live in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. It is a city of four seasons and is one of the largest cities in the world. 안녕하세요, 제 이름은 문다정이고, dal이라는 이름으로 그림을 그리고 있습니다. 'dal'은 한국어로 제 성인 Moon을 의미합니다. 그림을 무척 좋아하는 사람이라고 소개하고싶네요. 저는 대한민국의 수도 서울에 살고있어요. 사계절 뚜렷한 도시이고, 세계적으로 손꼽히는 큰 도시 중 하나입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Nothing special. But, I think that I want to draw what I want to hang in my room. That 's the sort of criteria I paint. Recently, I try to draw as simple as possible using face and color. 특별한 것은 없습니다. 다만 제 방에 걸어두고 싶은 것을 그리자고 생각하고 그리는 편입니다. 그게 제가 그림을 그리는 일종의 기준같습니다. 근래에는 면과 색을 사용해 최대한 심플하게 그리는 노력을 하고 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I mainly draw with Samsung Galaxy Tab s3. I use sketchbook pro app. It is convenient because it is portable and easy to modify. Sometimes I draw on paper with a pencil. 저는 주로 삼성 갤럭시탭 s3을 이용해 그립니다. 스케치북 프로 어플을 사용하구요. 휴대성이 좋고, 수정이 용이하다는 점에서 편리합니다. 때로는 연필로 종이 위에 그리기도 합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I like to paint, so I always think about how to draw something. Then, when it comes to what I really like, I try to draw it. Or write it down on the iPhone Notepad and draw one of the notes later. 그림그리는 것을 좋아해서 늘 어떤걸 어떻게 그릴까 생각합니다. 그러다가 정말로 맘에드는 것이 떠오르면 바로 그려봅니다. 혹은 아이폰 메모장에 적어두고 나중에 메모에 적힌 것 중 하나를 그립니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I like to be alone, and I like to express my feelings of that time. I also like to paint someone who is alone. 저는 혼자 있는 시간을 좋아하는데, 그때 느끼는 감정들을 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다. 혹은 혼자 있는 누군가의 모습을 그리는 것도 좋습니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I am a person with a broken heart, and I often feel depressed. However, when I draw a picture, I feel happiness that I felt from inside. This is a kind of healing. I seem to be able to look at the world with warm eyes while drawing a picture. 저는 마음의 상처가 있는 사람이고, 우울한 기분을 느낄 때가 많습니다. 그런데 그림을 그릴때만큼은 내면에서 우러난 행복감을 느끼게 됩니다. 이것은 일종의 치유와 같습니다. 그림을 그리면서 세상을 따뜻한 눈으로 바라볼 수 있게 된 것 같습니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in Korean history at Yonsei University in Seoul. I learned painting at a private institute until middle school. After that, I had to quit the institute because of my studies. However, I liked to paint so I have continued painting. 저는 서울의 연세대학교에서 한국사를 전공했습니다. 그림은 중학생때까지 사설 학원에서 배웠어요. 그 이후로는 학업때문에 미술 학원을 그만두어야 했습니다. 그러나 워낙 그림그리는 것을 좋아해 계속해서 그려왔어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to make many picture books for both children and adults. I also want to make t-shirts and bags or something, with my pictures. And.. want to draw pictures in more ways than I have done so far. 그림책을 만들고 싶습니다. 어린이와 어른을 위한 그림책들 모두를 만들고 싶어요. 또 제 그림을 넣은 티셔츠나 가방 같은 것도 만들어보고 싶습니다. 지금까지보다 다양한 방식으로 그림을 그려보고 싶고요.

9. What about in ten?

It was a difficult time for me in the last decade, so I want to be happy myself for the next 10 years. 제게 지난 10년간은 힘든 시간이었기에, 앞으로의 10년간은 제 자신이 행복하기를 바라고 있습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope people can get warmed up for a while looking at my paintings. Especially those who suffer from difficult problems. Like I did. 제 그림을 보고 잠깐이라도 마음이 따뜻해질 수 있기를 바랍니다. 특히 힘든 일이 있어서 마음이 아픈 분들이요. 제가 그랬듯이요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like sweet desserts like chocolate. I also like cafe latte. It is happier to eat snacks than to eat for meals. 저는 초콜릿같은 단 디저트를 좋아합니다. 카페라떼도 좋아하고요. 식사를 위한 끼니보다는 간식 먹는 시간이 더 행복합니다.

12. Favourite book?

All type of picture books. Thesedays, I enjoy webtoons. 그림책이라면 다 좋습니다. 요새는 웹툰도 즐겨봐요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I like tango. In fact, rather than having a particular favorite genre, I find good music depending on the situation. 탱고를 좋아합니다. 사실 특별히 좋아하는 장르가 있다기보다는, 그때그때 듣기 좋은 음악을 찾습니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Taking pictures, visiting museums, watching movies. Travel. 사진찍기, 미술관관람, 영화감상. 여행.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Actually, I am ashamed to say that I am an artist. Anyways, if you ask me to choose another job, I would like to be a musical actress or a fashion model. 사실 제가 아티스트라고 말하기에는 아직은 부끄러워요. 그럼에도 불구하고 다른 직업을 골라보라고하면, 뮤지컬배우나 패션모델이 되어보고싶네요.
