Instagram: @mollypaperwork 1. What’s your story? Where are you from?My name is Molly. I was born and raised in Macao. I’m a full-time worker in a company here, sometimes a part-time graphic designer and illustrator. Macao is a tiny place. It was colonized by Portugal when I was in primary school, but it has returned to China. I majored in product design at university. Actually, I started illustrating in high school. For me, it was an extraordinary and fun period of time. I wasn’t fond of school then. Instead, I preferred doodling with online friends at home. After receiving a digital picture as a gift from a friend I had never met, I became obsessed with painting. 2. Tell us about your aesthetic.I like pastel colors. I’m seeking a balance between childish taste and delicacy. 3. What is your favourite medium and why? Most of the time, I paint digitally. It’s highly revisable, which is convenient when your ideas frequently change. Sometimes, I also draft with acrylic and collages and then finish with the computer. After all, the texture is unique and irreplaceable. 4. What is your artistic process like?I can’t sketch at places like café because it would be difficult for me to calm down and concentrate. I like working in a quiet environment. For example, I would think about the composition and colorways of pictures before bedtime -the most relaxing and inspiring time of the day. The next morning, I put my thoughts into drawings for later reference. 5. Who and/or what inspires your work? There are a lot of fantastic works that have touched me and reminded me how beautiful life is. 6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?Nothing compares to the sense of accomplishment when I have finished work. I pay extra attention to details and keep in mind nice colorways and composition, hoping they could be applied in my works. 7. Where did you study?I studied product design at Macao University of Science and Technology. I taught myself how to paint mainly through resources and communication online. 8. Where do you see yourself in five years?First, I want to be more skilled in painting and interpersonal communication. Second, I want to accomplish a series of mature works or publish a book. 9. What about in ten?I hope I can take charge by then and spend more time on my interests. 10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?I will be satisfied as long as the viewers find my works aesthetic and interesting. 11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?I’m a big fan of spicy food. Anything spicy is fine with me. 12. Favourite book?I read collections of proses with drawings. I seldom read novels. There are a lot of favorites, the most recent is, Animo: The Short Elegy and Donmak: Once upon a Hong Kong Favourite genre of music? All kinds of music. But I prefer OSTs. 14. What are your hobbies?Walking; trolling in supermarkets, parks or on beaches; playing with cats. 15.
