1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, my name is Moonique. It means no nickname. I always try not to be tied to names. (name like daughter, girl, student, part-timer, etc) I'm an illustrator, designer, and tattoo artist. I'm from South Korea. 안녕하세요. 문익입니다. 이름이 없다는 뜻을 이름으로 삼고있습니다. 언제나 이름에 매이지 않으려 유의하며 작업하고있습니다.(딸, 여자, 학생, 알바생 등등) 일러스트레이터, 디자이너이면서 타투이스트 입니다. 한국에서 작업하고있습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I prefer to express myself metaphorically rather than express myself straightforwardly. I want my work to touch someone's heart. I mean not like making someone think about the subject, but like they can just feel and understand it. I love soft semi-saturated colors and crumbly textures. Recently I’m interested in capturing light and time. 직설적으로 표현하는것보다는 비유하여 둘러 표현하는 것을 좋아합니다. 직접적인 문장으로 와닿는 감상보다는 어떠한 기분, 마음으로 와닿는 그림을 그리고 싶습니다. 부드러운 중채도의 색감과 푸스스 바스라지는 질감을 좋아합니다. 최근에는 빛과 시간을 아름답게 담아내는 것에 관심이 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I like thin water-based pens or pencils. That's what's most comfortable and familiar to me. They're also easy to carry with me so I can draw things in my free time. It feels simple and comfy. My most frequently used medium is definitely photoshop. Digital works are clear, neat and easy to correct, so recently I always retouch with photoshop even if it's a hand drawing. 얇은 수성펜이나 연필로 그리는 것을 가장 선호 합니다. 손에 가장 편안하고 가지고 다니기도 용이해서 카페나 잠시 뜨는 시간들에 크로키북에 낙서를 하며 시간을 보내기에도 좋습니다. 간단하고 편안한 느낌입니다. 가장 자주 쓰는것은 아무래도 포토샵. 디지털 작업이 주는 선명하고 깔끔한 느낌, 수정이 용이하다는 장점때문에 근래엔 수작업도 디지털 작업을 한번 거쳐 완성하고 있습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Mostly I start work with the flow of consciousness or the noisiest topic on my mind. I've captured all my good ideas in a memo with rough sketches and short text. That "memo" grows into artwork. When I'm alone, I just doodle with my pen and paper and then that becomes something. After finishing a piece, I always check it one more time the next day after I wake up and decide if it's finished or not. 주로 의식의 흐름, 나의 마음속에서 가장 시끄러운 주제로 작업을 시작합니다. 떠오르는 좋은 생각들은 모두 메모와 간단한 스케치로 달아나지 않게 잡아두고 언젠가는 작업으로 만들어냅니다. 혼자 있는 시간들에는 간단히 챙긴 펜과 종이로 가벼운 낙서를 하고, 그것이 또 어떤 아이디어로 이어질때가 많습니다. 작업을 마치면 꼭 자고 일어나 다음날 다시 체크하고 완성인지 아닌지 결정합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I’m inspired by cute and strange pics or conversations with people. Passing expressions and sentences float around in my head and then it becomes my pieces. I'm interested in various different opinions. I want to open my sight as wide as possible and be flexible. New ideas come to mind when I see materials before and then after when they’re made into something different. I’m also into pre-made interesting artworks. Like a really good concert, exhibit, pieces. They make me wanna do really cool things in a new way. They give me a lot of inspiration and enthusiasm. 귀엽고 이상한 사진들이나 주변인들과 나누는 이야기에서 많은 생각들을 얻습니다. 지나가는 감상과 문장들이 맴돌아 길어져 작업이 되는 경우가 많습니다. 여러가지 다양하고 다른 생각들에 관심이 많고, 가능한 시야를 유연하게 열어두고 싶습니다. 아직 만들어지기 전의 재료들을 볼때엔 무언가 새로운것들이 생각나고, 멋진 콘서트, 전시, 작업들같이 이미 만들어진 좋은 작업물들을 볼 때엔 나도 저렇게 멋진 것을 해내야지하는 좋은 열의와 마음이 생깁니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I like to talk about a ton of different subjects and want to express my opinion. But I also can express my opinion with my works and get my point across. I think it’s a really big advantage to be able to express myself through my work rather than just through words. A lot of subtleties and nuances can get lost in translation and lead to misunderstandings, but art doesn’t need a translation. sometimes I think the artwork is better than a language People need to take time to understand the artwork and the expression of opinion comes through as impressions and feelings, not words. I love the moment when the impression turns to their own sentence. I can feel the beauty of the moment in a more detailed way through art. 다양한 주제에 대해 말하는것을 좋아하기도하고 어떠한 상황에대해 의견을 표현하고 싶은 순간들이필연적으로 있는데,그 때에 문장이 아닌것으로 나의 마음이나 의견을 표현할 수 있다는 것은 굉장한장점인것 같습니다. 언어나 문장의 미묘한 차이와 뉘앙스는 오역과 오해가 잦은데, 그림은 통역이필요하지 않다는 점이 좋습니다. 때로는 언어보다 그림이 더 좋은 역할을 한다고 생각합니다. 천천히 시간을 두고 보아야 알 수 있고 감상들은 문장이 아닌 인상과 감정으로 다가옵니다. 감상이 각자의 문장으로 구성되는 순간을 좋아합니다. 작업을 통해 순간의 아름다움을 좀 더 세세하게 느끼게 되었다고 생각합니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in visual design at Mungji university. Still learning from people and life. 명지대학교에서 시각디자인을 전공했습니다. 여전히 사람들에게서, 삶에서 배우고 익히고 있습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Well... 5 years from now... I wish I could work with a more peaceful and stable mind. I want to see my works in books, on buildings, and in more various places and various ways. Hopefully busy with work! 글쎄요. 5년후에는 조금 더 편안한 마음으로 작업하고 있다면 좋겠습니다. 저의 작업들이 책이나, 건물이나, 다양한곳에 다양한 모습으로 스며있는 모습을 보고싶습니다. 일을 하느라 바쁘면 좋겠네요.

9. What about in ten?

I hope I fit the word "artist" more naturally and comfortably. I want a healthy balance between work and life. 작가라는 호칭이 조금 더 자연스럽고 편안히 잘 어울렸으면 합니다. 일과 삶, 균형이 잘 맞는 생활을 하고 있으면 좋겠습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

If my works make someone feel some sort of emotion, I'll be happy. That emotion can be anything from empathy, reassurance, or even just simple pleasure. Even if it's just for a moment, I want to give people that brief respite from everyday stress. In short, I want my work to inspire good emotions. As far as a personal goal, I hope that I can live and support myself with just my own talent and effort. I love myself as an artist but I hope working as an artist has not to end with just enjoying. I hope I can have proper reward and that reward keep my life as an artist. 누군가에게 제 작업들이 어떠한 마음을 불러일으킨다면 아주 좋을것 같습니다. 공감이라던가, 위로라던가 용기라던가. 그저 즐거움도 좋습니다. 좋은 영향을 줄 수 있다면 좋을 것 같습니다. 잠시간의 환기라도 좋습니다. 개인적인 목표로는 개인의 재능과 노력으로 살아갈 수 있게 되는것입니다. 아티스트로서의 본인을 좋아하고, 좋아서 하는것이지만 그것이 단순히 좋은것에서만 끝나기를 바라지는 않습니다. 적절한 대가를 받으며 일하고 그것이 아티스트로서의 삶을 지속가능하게 하면 좋겠습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Wow... So many things on my head...But definitely sweeeets! Sweets give me true happiness. Plating, appearance, smell, taste everything's perfect. 와 좋아하는것이 너무 많아서 꼽기가 힘들지만, 극강의 행복을 주는것은 역시나 디져트. 플레이팅부터, 디져트의 생김새, 향기, 맛 어느하나 빼놓을 수 없는 즐거움입니다.

12. Favourite book?

Jean Jacques Sempe's "Marcellin Caillou" and "Roul Tanurin". When read those books, I'm in lovely mood. 장자끄 상빼의 얼굴 빨개지는 아이와 자전거를 못타는 아이. 읽고있으면 기분이 사랑스러워집니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Nowadays my favourite musician is Tom Misch. Mostly listening 60 to 70's rocknroll. Like the Beatles, wham and The clash. Love to dance weird with those kinds of music 요즘 가장 빠져있는 뮤지션은 tom Misch. 가장 즐겨듣는것은 6-70년대 즈음의 로큰롤입니다. beatles나 wham, The clash같은. 들으면서 이상한 춤을 추는것을 좋아합니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

I lie down and tweet. haha. Or ride a bicycle and going to a cafe for sweets with friends. 누워서 트위터를 합니다. 하하. 자전거를 타는것과 친구들과 디져트집 도장깨기 하는것 역시 즐깁니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Even if I was not an artist, I'll do something creative. Make new things, imagining and planning like a promoter. 그림이 아니더라도 기획같이 무언가 새로운 일을 만들고 상상하는 일을 하고 있었을 것 같습니다.
