1. What's your story? Where are you from?

I live in Seoul and my nickname is mozza. My real name is Lee Seung Jae. I work in the field of design and illustration. 서울에서 거주하고 있고 mozza 라는 닉네임으로 디자인과 일러스트 분야에서 활동하고 있는 이승재입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I'm drawing pictures on the theme of a Fantastic-Ordinary Day. A little twist of what's going on with the addition of unrealistic elements and symbols for our everyday lives. 환상적인 일상이라는 큰 주제를 가지고 작업을 하고 있습니다. 누구나 겪는 일상을 조금 비틀어서 비현실적인 요소와 상징물을 넣어 우리의 평범한 하루들에 의미를 부여하고 있습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I usually use lots of pens and Photoshop. Because it's the most intuitive and boundless in expression. 저는 주로 펜과 포토샵을 많이 씁니다. 가장 직관적이면서도 무궁무진한 표현이 가능하기 때문입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

When I get a picture of a situation or a piece of journalism that I hope to paint in everyday life, I combine the objects that fit into the context of the situation. That way, it's going to be a new set of ideas, and it helps to portray a more realistic world. 일상생활을 하다가 그림으로 표현했으면 좋을 법한 상황이나 뉴스를 접하게 되면 그 상황에 맞는 상징이 되는 오브젝트들을 조합합니다. 그렇게 하다보면 새로운 아이디어가 나오게 되고 좀 더 비현실적인 세계를 표현하는데 도움이 됩니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

People who pass by me, or acquaintances, offer inspiration. Stories from various people give me a lot of inspiration. 나를 스쳐 지나가는 사람들, 혹인 지인들 모두가 영감을 제공합니다. 다양한 사람들에게서 듣는 그들만의 이야기는 나에게 많은 영감을 줍니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I think it's a dynamic and driving force that gives life a lot of fun. If you put together similar or conflicting elements, I think that something new (or totally different) will come out. 삶에 재미를 부여하는 활력소이자 원동력이라고 생각합니다. 비슷하거나 서로 상반되는 요소들을 끼워 맞추다 보면 전혀 다른 새로운 무언가가 나오지 않을까 생각됩니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in Media communication design at Myongji University. 명지대학교에서 영상디자인을 전공했습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Of course, I want to be more actively painting and I want to travel more. My goal is to travel to Iceland within 5 years. 당연한 얘기지만 그림으로 더욱 더 활발한 활동을 하고 싶고 여행도 더 많이 다니고 싶습니다. 개인적으로 5년안에 아이슬란드로 여행가는게 목표입니다.

9. What about in ten?

I hope you make a lot of money in pictures. I really need this. 그림으로 먹고 살만한 아티스트가 되었으면 좋겠습니다. 이건 정말 필요해요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope my paintings will be special for many people. Life isn't that boring. 제 그림들로 하여금 많은 사람들이 일상을 더 특별하게 생각했으면 좋겠습니다. 삶은 그렇게 지루한게 아니거든요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Korean style raw beef and sushi. 육회, 초밥.

12. Favourite book?

Bernard Werber's Le Papillon des étoiles made Mobius illustrations. 뫼비우스가 삽화를 그린 베르나르 베르베르의 파피용.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Jazz and R&B soul. My favorite singer is Lianne La Havas. 재즈와 알앤비 소울. 최근 가장 좋아하는 가수는 리앤 라 하바스입니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Watching movies in theatres and collecting miscellaneous things. 극장에서 영화 두편 연속으로 보기. 잡동사니 수집.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I had a dream to become an astronomer or a cosmonaut. I'd like to try it. 천문학자나 우주비행사가 꿈이었는데, 그걸 꼭 한번 해보고 싶습니다.
