Instagram: @mumucl 1. What’s your story? Where are you from?I am an illustrator currently based in Shanghai, China. I studied animation at university. While studying there, I found out that I prefered illustrating to animation production. After graduation, I decided to learn and improve my illustrations further. So I took an MFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. This period helped me to understand illustration and to prepare for the next step in my career. 2. Tell us about your aesthetic.I love modern art and mid-century illustrations. These artworks have had a great effect on me. Meanwhile, I am also a color lover. Colors are so important that even my sketches are colored. One of the key elements in my work is bright colors. 3. What is your favourite medium and why?I always use Photoshop to create my works. Because it is easy to change. Also, I like drawing some doodles in my sketchbook. For me, the most fascinating transformation is when you draw something wrong, you can not change it, and you have to think about it and finish it. But there is always be some happy accident. That is my favorite part. 4. What is your artistic process like?I prefer to scribble on paper firstly. These mazy lines will give me some inspiration so that I can abstract graphics and redesign them. When I am looking at my first sketches, I’m asking myself: "How can I do this storytelling better?". Then, I start thinking about it and make some changes. 5. Who and/or what inspires your work? Most of my inspiration comes from girls around me and my daily life. Most of my female friends are doing creative work. We give each other mutual support and inspiration. I just depict some of the wonderful moments in my personal work ;) In addition, because my style is very graphic, I just try to create new work that is a combination of short sentences and images together. Also, I found I really like to design Letters. I have had so much fun in this progress. 6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world? My family made clothes and sold them when I was a child so there are a lot of technique books about fashion design and patterns in my house. These books opened a new world for me when I was a little kid. I learnt to draw a lot of stuff from those books. You can see that my style is very graphic because of those pattern design books. Meanwhile, my mom likes to show me a lot of abstract art books and expressionism art books during my childhood. So I love painting since I was a little child. 7.
