1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi. I'm Nara Shin. I live in South Korea and I draw pictures. It's both a hobby and a job. 안녕하세요. 저는 신나라입니다. 저는 한국에서 살고 있고 그림을 그리고 있습니다. 취미이기도하고 일이기도 하죠.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I used to live in the country when I was young. The house and the school were surrounded by mountains. The mountains and fields of the days were good playgrounds, but they looked different at night. It was strange and scary. I feel cold when I think about it now. The mountain is a wonderful view, but it has a quiet and scary look somewhere. I don't want to miss that feeling. I want to paint something that is friendly but weird and lovely but strange. 어릴 때 저는 시골에 살았었습니다. 집도 학교도 산으로 둘러싸인 곳이었어요. 낮의 산과 밭은 좋은 놀이터였지만 밤이되면 모습이 달라집니다. 어디에나 빛이 있는 곳이 아니었기 때문에 해가지면 낯설고 무서웠어요. 지금 생각하면 서늘한 기분이 들어요. 산은 멋진 풍경이지만 어딘가 스산하고 무서운 구석이 있죠. 그 느낌을 놓치고싶지 않아요. 친근하지만 낯설고 사랑스럽지만 어딘가 이상한 그런것을 그리고 싶어요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I usually do digital painting, but I don't insist on it. It's just that I'm used to it. It doesn't matter what medium I use if I can express what I feel. 저는 디지털페인팅을 주로 하고 있지만 이걸 고집하는건 아니예요. 단지 익숙해서 주로 그리는 것일 뿐이죠. 그게 뭐든 제가 원하는 느낌을 낼 수 있다면 재료는 상관없어요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

I embody the picture with the atmosphere that I feel in color. I can't imagine what it's like without color. So, you have to color it before you perfect the sketch. When I feel like I like it, I start sketching again. I imagine how it feels when it is finished. 저는 컬러에서 느껴지는 분위기로 그림을 구체화 합니다. 컬러가 없으면 어떤 분위기인지 잘 상상이 안돼요. 그래서 스케치를 완벽하게 하기도 전에 컬러를 칠하게 돼죠. 디테일하지는 않게요. 마음에 드는 분위기가 느껴지면 그때부터 다시 스케치를 해요. 완성됐을 때의 느낌을 상상하면서요.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Weather and seasonal changes. 날씨와 계절의 변화에 가장 큰 영향을 받는 것 같아요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

When I paint, I think about things or people who pass by casually. And I talk to them and I listen to them. For me, painting is a medium that allows me to understand things other than myself. 그림을 그리고 있으면 무심코 지나쳤던 사람들, 물건들을 다시 한번 생각하게돼요. 그리고 그들에게 말을 걸고 그들의 이야기를 듣죠. 저에게 그림은 제가 아닌 다른 것들을 이해할 수 있도록하는 매개체입니다.

7. Where did you study?

I liked painting when I was young, so I started drawing myself. After that, I entered the Seoul Institute of the Arts and majored in digital art. 그림은 어릴 때부터 좋아서 스스로 그리기 시작했어요. 이후 서울예술대학교에 입학하여 디지털아트를 전공했습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I don't think it's much different from now. I'm still drawing my favorite paintings and working. 지금과 크게 다르지 않을 것 같아요. 계속해서 좋아하는 그림을 그리고 일도 하고 있겠죠.

9. What about in ten?

I don't really have a clue. But I'm sure I'll still be drawing. 정말 모르겠어요. 하지만 계속 그림을 그리고 있을 거라는 것은 확신해요.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I hope more people will see my paintings. I also want to build my own worldview. 더 많은 사람들이 제 그림을 보길 바래요. 또 저만의 확고한 세계관을 구축하고 싶어요.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

Sandwich! 샌드위치!

12. Favourite book?

I recently read Margaret Atwood's book and it's very interesting. 최근 마거릿 애트우드의 책을 읽고 있는데 아주 재미있어요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

Piano Jazz. 재즈를 자주 듣는데 피아노로 연주한 곡을 좋아해요.

14. What are your hobbies?

Reading a book or going for a walk. 책을 읽거나 산책을 합니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

I think I'll be a writer and or do farming. I'd like to do my own research by watching plants grow. 글을 쓰고 농사를 지었을 것같아요. 식물들이 자라는 모습을 보며 나름의 연구도하고요.
