1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hello. I am a Korean illustrator who draws the time of imagination. My nickname is ‘Pixy’. My artwork includes collaborative illustrations with photos of children, drawing illustrations of children's books and picture books, and designing applications etc. 안녕하세요. 저는 상상의 여유를 그리는 한국 일러스트레이터입니다. 저의 닉네임은 “Pixy”입니다. 아트웍으로는 일러스트를 아이들 사진과 함께 콜라보레이션하거나 동화책 또는 그림책의 삽화를 그리거나 앱을 디자인하는 등의 작업을 하였습니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I hope to find the time of imagination through my paintings in repeated busy everyday life. This is related to my nickname ‘Pixy’. Pixy is a mischievous fairy. Children also like mischief. And they think the imagination of a fairy is reality. So I felt that Pixy and children were alike. Children, in their daily lives have the time to live in their imagination. I think this is a very creative action. How much have we been trying to imagine as we become adults? Currently the subject of my artwork is childlike. However, I hope to have not only imagination like childlike but also time to think afterwards. 저는 반복되는 바쁜 일상 속에서 저의 그림을 통해 상상의 여유를 찾기를 바랍니다. 이것은 저의 예명 ‘픽시’와 관련이 있습니다. 픽시는 장난을 좋아하는 요정이에요. 아이들 역시 장난을 좋아하며 요정이라는 상상력이 현실이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 저는 픽시와 아이들이 많이 닮아있다고 느꼈습니다. 아이들은 일상의 많은 부분들은 그들의 상상 속에서 살아가는 시간을 갖습니다. 저는 이것을 매우 창조적인 행동이라고 생각해요. 어른이 된 우리는 상상을 해보는 시간을 과연 얼마나 갖을까요? 현재 동심에 관한 작업을 하고 있습니다. 하지만 저는 우리가 동심 같은 상상 뿐 아니라 더 나아가 생각을 할 수 있는 시간을 갖기를 바랍니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Mostly, work is done by Photoshop. Personally, however, I prefer manual using colored pencils or paints. The sensation and vividness of materials directly sensed by hands and eyes on paper gives emotionally comfort. So whenever I have time, I draw in a small notebook with colored pencils. 주로 작업은 포토샵으로 합니다. 하지만 개인적으로는 색연필이나 물감 등을 이용한 수작업을 더 좋아해요. 종이 위에서 직접 손과 눈으로 느껴지는 재료의 감각과 생생함은 정서적으로 편안함을 주기 때문입니다. 그래서 시간 날 때 마다 작은 노트에 색연필로 드로잉을 합니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

When the idea comes up I sketch simply and collect data. Then I will do an accurate sketch with a pencil before scanning it. Finally, I paint in Photoshop. 아이디어가 떠오르면 간단히 스케치를 하고 자료를 모읍니다. 그리고 연필로 정확한 스케치를 하고 그것을 스캔합니다. 마지막으로 포토샵에서 색칠을 하고 끝냅니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Currently I draw an imagination of childlike that I had a child's day, so my childhood memories are also a lot of inspiration. In addition, it can be obtained in nature, movies, books and exhibitions etc. 지금은 어린 날 가지고 있던 동심에 대한 상상을 그리기 때문에 저의 어린 시절의 추억이 많은 영감이 되기도 합니다. 그 외에 자연이나 영화나 책, 전시 등에서도 얻기도 합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

For me, The picture is to express my idea. And I ask questions. “What do you think when I think about it?”. After that, various stories will come out. Some people sympathize with me. Others say opposing thoughts. Or some people will talk about yourself. I will learn answers in multiple directions through this. 저에게 있어 그림은 저의 생각을 표현하는 것입니다. 그리고 질문을 하죠. “저는 이렇게 생각하는 당신은 어떻게 생각하세요?”. 그럼 다양한 이야기들이 나옵니다. 저에게 공감을 하는 사람도 있어요. 또는 반대되는 생각을 하는 사람도 있죠. 또는 자신의 이야기를 해주시는 분들도 있어요. 저는 이것을 통해 여러 방향의 답들을 배웁니다.

7. Where did you study?

I majored in art education at the university. In that department, I learnt various art genres such as western painting, oriental paintings, cartoons, prints, designs, sculpture etc. So, I can use various methods and materials. It is likely to be able to make new challenges for future work. 저는 대학교에서 미술교육을 전공했습니다. 그 학과에서는 서양화, 동양화, 만화, 판화, 디자인, 조소 등 다양한 미술장르를 배울 수 있어요. 그래서 다양한 기법과 재료들을 사용할 수 있습니다. 그것들은 앞으로의 작업에 새로운 도전을 할 수 있는 힘이 되어줄 것 같아요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Five years later, I would like to be a person with solid spirit power that does not easily shake. And I would like to publish picture book and fairy tale book that I drew a picture and wrote sentences. And I would like to do more various work such as poster, fancy, fashion etc. 5년 후에는 쉽게 흔들리지 않는 단단한 정신력을 가지고 있는 사람이 되고 싶어요. 그리고 제가 그림을 그리고 글을 쓴 그림책 또는 동화책을 출판하고 싶어요. 그리고 포스터, 팬시, 패션 등 좀 더 다양한 작업들을 해보고 싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

Ten years later, I would like to do large-scale work in more diverse fields like canvas, installation art work. 10년 후에는 캔버스, 설치 미술 작업과 같은 더 다양한 분야의 대형 작업을 해보고 싶습니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

At first, it is my happiness. I love the act of drawing. And drawing is not to stop thinking. So, I hope to become a person who has not stopped thinking. 첫 번째로는 저의 행복입니다. 저는 그리는 행위 자체가 너무 좋습니다. 그리고 그림은 그린다는 건 생각을 멈추지 않는다는 것입니다. 그래서 저는 생각하기를 멈추지 않는 사람이 되기를 원합니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

My favorite food is the food that my grandmother and my mother cook. In particular I like Galbi-jjim, Doenjang-jjigae, Ganjang-gejang, and kimchi-jjigae that she cooks. And I usually drink coffee and beer. 제가 가장 좋아하는 음식은 할머니와 엄마가 해주는 음식입니다. 특히 할머니와 엄마께서 해주신 갈비찜과 된장찌개, 간장게장 그리고 김치찌개를 제일 좋아합니다. 그리고 주로 커피와 맥주를 마셔요.

12. Favourite book?

My favourite book is Harry Potter. I saw Harry Potter as a movie when I was a child. And I read it as a book when I became an adult. The imagination of the film was too shocking. As a child, the magical world is likely to be there, and it is still hoped that it will be there. But the book was more impressive than the movie. Books have made me interested with more imagination. 제가 가장 좋아하는 책은 해리포터에요. 어릴 땐 영화로 보고 성인이 돼서 원작인 책으로 읽게 되었습니다. 그 영화에서 보여준 상상력은 매우 충격적이었어요. 어릴 때 그 마법세계는 정말 꼭 있을 것만 같았고 지금도 있기를 바랍니다. 하지만 영화보다 책이 더 감동적이었습니다. 책은 더한 상상력으로 저를 흥미롭게 만들었거든요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I usually listen to genre of indie music, R&B or hip-hop. 주로 인디 음악, R&B 또는 hip hop 장르를 듣습니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

My hobby is drawing in cafes. Or reading books. And I like to walk around for exercise. Usually, I sit in front of my desk all day, so I need to move. Walking around the park near my house is very fun. When I go to the park, I can see various kinds of trees and meet many kinds of animals including cats and birds. It looks like a small zoo. 저의 취미는 카페에서 드로잉하기 입니다. 또는 책을 읽어요. 그리고 운동 삼아 걷는 것을 좋아합니다. 보통 저는 하루 종일 책상 앞에 앉아있기 때문에 몸을 움직여 줄 필요가 있거든요. 집 근처에 있는 공원을 걷는 건 정말 재밌어요. 그 공원에 가면 다양한 나무들도 볼 수 있고 고양이와 새 등 많은 동물들도 만날 수 있거든요. 꼭 작은 동물원 같습니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

If I weren't an artist, I would like to be a creator of a documentary on nature. I want to look at nature and put it on the screen. I like to see many creatures in the ocean, especially whales. I love the blue Planet of the BBC. I watch enraptured by the scenes. I think it's really funny to know the world I didn't know. 아티스트가 아니었다면 자연 다큐를 만드는 사람이 되고 싶어요. 그래서 자연을 관찰하고 화면에 담고 싶어요. 바다에 사는 여러 생물들, 특히 고래를 눈으로 직접 보고 싶어요. BBC의 블루 플래닛을 좋아해요. 볼 때 넋을 놓고 봐요. 내가 몰랐던 세계를 알아간다는 건 정말 재미있는 일이에요.
