Instagram: @so.woo.zoo 1. What’s your story? Where are you from?Hi, I’m SOWOOZOO, drawing artworks in South Korea. I capture small moments and the mood of unique scents of the world, then put them on canvas. 2. Tell us about your aesthetic.I symbolically express what I imagine and feel in everyday life with my artworks. I especially love the surreal mood when everyday objects are arranged unexpectedly. 3. What is your favourite medium and why?I mostly create artworks by combining digital and analog methods. Drawing on the paper first, and then coloring in digital. Although I love the texture of pencils and colored pencils on paper, I work with both hand drawing and digital techniques. The digital medium is easier than hand drawing when I modify the artwork. 4. What is your artistic process like?I often have random thoughts or images and keep them in my phone or notebook. For example, when I pass by my apartment at evening, suddenly I think, ‘What if my body gets really big, and I sit on the top of the apartment building and sing with the breeze?’. Moments like this inspire my artwork. 5. Who and/or what inspires your work?I get inspiration from my feelings all the time. For example, the feelings that can’t be forgotten or endless waves of loneliness. Others include the unfamiliar sensation when you get carried away by something new or unforgettable moments in relationships. I take a note of these sensations and look through them. Everyday life and the people around me bring these special moments. I’m also influenced by what I observe and the stories I encounter in the world. 6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?I started enjoying imagination in daily life after I started drawing. I think of new images by adding my feelings onto everyday things that pass me by. This process makes everyday fun. Sometimes I feel secure because whatever I go through and feel can be material for my paintings. I never used to be a big fan of myself. Since I started artwork with my feelings, I’ve tried to capture all the emotion, imagination, and stories in my life. This has made me take more care of myself. 7. Where did you study?I went to Hong-ik University majoring in animation I think I was affected more by my friends in school than the classes. 8. Where do you see yourself in five years?Well, I hope I can publish a book about my story in five years. Currently, I’m working on animation and motion graphic design. In the future, I’d like to work on making music videos for singers I like. 9. What about in ten?I can’t really imagine in 10 years! I really hope I will be able to do something interesting. 10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?I want to release my emotions and thoughts through the drawing process. I’d like to influence others’ emotions by shaking them free of their ordinary routine. 11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?I really love spicy food and beer. I especially enjoy ddeok-bbokki(Korean spicy rice cake) and ma ra xiang guo (Chinese spicy soup). And I love to watch TV shows while having ddeok-bbokki and beer. 12. Favourite book?I like books by Oliver Sacks. “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” is one of my favorite books. When I read his book about his patients, I realized how people can see the world differently when normal things go astray. I also like to read about space and physics. I believe in multiverse theory even though I can’t understand the entirety of the theory. I enjoy thinking about other versions of myself, making different choices than me throughout the multiverse. 13. Favourite genre of music?I like dreamy songs and songs with beautiful lyrics. 14. What are your hobbies? My pastimes are writing, listening to music, and singing. Since I chose to live vegan, cooking became an important hobby as well. It’s such a pleasure cooking with all the veggies in the fridge, making them into new dishes without recipes. And my old habit and hobby is jotting notes about thoughts and feelings in everyday life. When I look through them some time later, it feels like someone else wrote them down. It feels weird and kinda fun. Also I like to sing while playing the ukulele. When I sing, it feels like I exist only at that moment. I always live with lots of thoughts and worries, so it’s hard to live in the present. My hobbies keep me in the present. 15. If you weren’t an artist, what would you be?I’d like to be physicist who solves the mysteries of space or a singer-songwriter who sings about herself.
