1. What's your story? Where are you from?

I’m a Korean American immigrant. I was born in Seoul, South Korea, but my family moved to the U.S pretty early in my life. I’m currently in LA attending school, and plan to stay put here a while. 1.당신의 이야기를 들려주세요. 어디서 왔습니까? 저는 한국계 미국인 이민자입니다. 저는 서울에서 태어났지만 제 가족은 제 인생 초반에 미국으로 이사를 왔습니다. 저는 현재 LA에 있는 학교에 다니고 있고, 당분간 여기에서 생활 할 계획입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

Lots of shapes and colors. Layers are pretty important to me. Most of my images come from a place of humor or optimism, but I think an element of melancholy usually ends up seeping through. 2. 당신의 미적 감각에 대해 말해 주세요. 저는 많은 도형과 색깔을 사용합니다. 레이어는 제가 생각하는 중요한 부분 중 하나입니다. 제 작품은 대부분 유머나 낙천주의에서 나온 것 입니다. 하지만 우울 요소가 끝에가서 스며 들 듯이 있는거 같습니다.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

I love to silkscreen. I would silkscreen everything if time and resources permitted. I have a sort of obsessiveness when I work and I think silkscreening lends itself to that type of micromanagement while still possessing a chaotic element in its process. Nothing quite goes how you thought it would. Risograph is proving to be similarly satisfying. 3. 당신이 가장 좋아하는 매체는 무엇이고 이유는 무엇입니까? 저는 실크 스크린을 가장 좋아합니다. 만약 시간과 자원이 허락된다면 저는 모든 것 을 실크 스크린 할 정도로 좋아합니다. 저는 어느정도의 제가 일하고 있을 때, 제 생각엔 그 과정에서 혼란스러운 요소를 소유하고 있는 와중에도 실크 스크린이 스스로 그런 타입의 주식을 소유하고 있다는 망상을 가지고 있습니다. 여러분이 그렇다고 생각했던 것은 아무것도 아닙니다. 리소그래프는 비슷하게 만족스럽다는 것을 증명하고 있습니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

A lot of it just involves stewing. After an ideas been over worked in my head, I try to draw it out, usually to mixed results. Then I end up reverse engineering something more satisfying out of the the initial attempts, which are never as good as they seemed at first. It’s a lot of anxiety and self doubt til the home stretch. 4. 당신의 예술 작품은 어떠한가요? 많은 것들이 그저 허튼 소리를 포함하고 있습니다. 아이디어가 머리 속 에 맴돈 후에 저는 그것들을 그려보다 보면 다양한 결과물이 나옵니다. 그러하면, 결국에는 처음 시도해 보는 것 보다 더욱 만족스러운 작품들이 나옵니다. 결과물이 나오기전까지는 불안하고 제 자신을 의심하기도 합니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

Anything having to do with books or design, especially retro Japanese graphic designers like Yoshikazu Ebisu. The colors and geometry, mixed in with the drawing, it’s all wonderful. Blexbolex is never far, nor is Mattotti. The Chicago Imagists are also amazing. All stories fascinate me. Myths, history, conspiracy, I think it's all amazing raw, human material to be worked with. The idea that everyone lives through their own little story with themselves as the main character is crazy to me, and I constantly wonder what it must be like for everyone else, and whether our interpretations of our own narratives is at all accurate. 5. 당신은 어디서, 그리고 누구한테서 영감은 받나요? 제 모든 디자인 혹은 책에 대한 영감은 대부분 요시카즈 에비스 처럼 복고풍의 일본 그래픽 디자이너에서 옵니다. 저는 그림에 채색과 도형이 함께 어우러져 있는 것을 보면 훌륭하다고 생각합니다. 블렉스볼렉스(Blexbolex) 이나 마토티(Mattotti)도 결코 제게 영감을 주는것과 거리가 멀지는 않습니다. 시카고의 사상주의자들 역시 멋있다고 생각합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

It’s a constant flurry of joy and stress. It feels really satisfying to see something become real in front of you, by your own effort, especially if others are there to share in it, but getting there can be ROUGH. 6. 당신의 인생에서 예술 작품은 어떤 역할을 합니까? 그로 인해 당신이 세상을 바라보는 방식이 어떻게 달라졌습니까? 저에게 예술 작품은 끊임 없는 기쁨과 스트레스 입니다. 제 머리 속에만 있던 작품이 노력으로 만들어져 현실이 되어 제 앞에 있는 모습을 보면 저는 매우 만족감을 느낍니다. 특히 다른 사람들이 제 그림을 보면서 이야기 나누는 것을 볼때 행복하겠지만, 거기에 도달하는 것은 불가능하다고 생각합니다.

7. Where did you study?

I’m in my last semester at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. It’s a pretty neat place. 7. 당신은 어디서 공부했습니까? 저는 캘리포니아 주에 파사데나 도시에 있는 아트센터 칼리지 오브 디자인 에서 마지막 학기를 보내고 있습니다. 여기는 꽤 근사한 곳입니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years? Working in an agency?

Freelancing as an illustrator. While I love design and have confidence in it, graphic design is something I ideally would keep to myself. To only make images for a living would be a dream come true. I would also like to be publishing zines and other printed objects frequently. 8. 5년 후에 당신은 어떤 모습이라고 생각하나요? 에이전시에서 일하고 있을까요? 저는 프리랜서인 일러스트레이터로 일하고 있을거라고 생각합니다. 제가 디자인을 사랑하고 그것에 대해 자신감이 있기에 그래픽 디자인은 제가 이상적으로 간직할 수 있는 것입니다. 그림을 만드는것만으로 생계를 유지한다는것은 제 꿈이 이루어진 겁니다. 진스들과 다른 인쇄물들을 자주 출판하고 싶습니다.

9. What about in ten?

Hopefully by then I’m fully immersed in independent publishing. Ten years in, I want to be focusing most of my efforts into curating content. To be in Korea again, and do my part in helping that community grow artistically is the ultimate goal. I think it’s important that immigrants like me come back and add to the culture there. I think it has a long way to go. 9. 10년 뒤에는 어떤 모습이라고 생각하나요? 희만컨대 10년뒤에 저의 모습은 아마도 독립적인 출판에 완전히 몰두하고 있을 것 같습니다. 십년뒤에는 저는 큐레이팅 콘텐츠에 대부분의 노력을 기울이고 싶습니다. 다시 한국으로 돌아가서, 지역사회가 예술적으로 성장하는 것을 돕는 것이 저의 궁극적인 목표입니다. 저와 같은 이민자가 한국으로 돌아가서 또 다른 문화를 추가하는 것이 중요하다고 생각합니다. 저는 그것이 아직 갈 길이 멀다고 생각합니다.

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want to help people connect with each other. I had the joy of growing up in between cultures. There's so much in the world that's worthwhile and we only experience a fraction of it in our lifetimes. I want to just to show something sincere about myself to others. I think that's my only real artistic aim, to be sincere and truthful about my stories and feelings and hope that people can find some common ground or add their own experiences to it. 10. 당신은 당신의 예술과 함께 무엇을 성취하기를 희망합니까? 저는 사람들이 서로 연결하는 것을 돕고 싶습니다. 저는 이 두 문화 사이에서 자라는 기쁨을 누렸다고 생각합니다. 세상에는 가치가 있는 것들이 너무나 많다고 생각하고 우리는 단지 우리의 일상중의 일부분만을 경험했다고 생각합니다. 저는 그저 제 자신에 대한 진실한 것을 다른 사람들에게 보여주고 싶습니다. 제 이야기와 감정들의 진실성을 통해 사람들이 저와의 약간의 공통점을 발견하거나 그들 자신의 경험을 더해 줄 수 있는 것은 제 유일한 예술적 목적이라고 생각합니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I love cooking Korean food. I cook like a grandma, it's all super heavy, homey comfort food, almost our version of country style. It’s got soul! I also cannot deny ramen of any form. 11. 자, 이제 당신에 대해 조금 더 말씀해 주세요: 당신이 가장 좋아하는 음식은 무엇인가요? 저는 한국 음식을 요리하는 것을 좋아합니다. 저는 할머니들이 우리의 시골마을 스타일처럼 엄청나게 무겁고, 집처럼 편안한 음식을 요리합니다. 한 사람의 마음이 담긴 것과 같습니다! 또한 저는 어떤 형태로든 라면을 부정할 수 없습니다.

12. Favourite book?

“Death by Water” by Kenzaburo Oe 12. 가장 좋아하는 책은 무엇입니까? Kenzaburo Oe 가 쓴 “Death by Water”을 가장 좋아합니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I don’t really have a favorite I think. I like Chance and The Mountain Goats a lot right now. Man Man and Anderson .Paak are probably what I play the most though. Lauryn Hill is timeless. 13. 무슨 장르의 음악을 좋아합니까? 제가 생각하기로는 제가 가장 좋아하는 장르가 없는 것 같습니다. 저는 Chance와 The Mountain Goats 에 매우 빠져있는 상태 입니다. 하지만 저는 아마도 Man Man 과 Anderson Paak을 가장 좋아하는 것 같습니다. Lauryn Hill은 시대에 뒤떨어진 것 입니다.

14. What are your hobbies?

Cartoons all day! I don’t think I’ll ever fully grow out of them. I can’t fully say how great it is for me that Samurai Jack is back for a final season. The new stuff is good too. Steven Universe and Rick and Morty both do it for me. 14. 당신의 취미생활은 무엇입니까? 하루종일 만화를 보는 것 입니다! 저는 절대 만화에서 완전히 성장할 거라고 생각하지 않습니다. 저는 “사무라이 잭의 마지막 시즌”이 나온 것이 말로 표현 못할 정도로 기뻤습니다. 새로운 만화들도 역시 좋습니다. 스티븐 유니버스 와 릭 앤 모티 는 다 저를 위한 만화 입니다.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Probably cooking. It’s more than fun for me. It’s a sort of therapy. Cutting vegetables or watching soup come to a boil puts me at ease. Plus the act of sharing food and feeding others is something that’s near and dear to my heart. 15. 만약 당신이 예술가가 아니라면, 당신은 무엇이 되겠습니까? 아무래도 요리를 할거 같다. 그저 재미있다고 하는 것 보다 더 큰 의미가 있는 것 같습니다. 요리는 마치 정신치료와 같다고 생각 합니다. 야채를 자르거나 수프를 보면 나를 편안하게 해 줍니다. 그리고 음식을 먹는 것과 다른 사람들에게 먹이를 주는 것은 내 마음 속에 있는 소중한 것 입니다.
