1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi, I’m Rini. I am an illustrator who draws digital illustrations in Korea.  I am currently a freelancer and I usually draw my personal paintings on my iPad or Photoshop. Also, I am hosting my online drawing class in many countries including the U.S. and Korea! You can learn how to draw from me anytime, anywhere using your smartphone app, iPad, or computer. 안녕하세요, 저는 한국에서 활동하고 있는 일러스트레이터 리니입니다. 현재 프리랜서로 활동하고 있으며 개인적인 그림 작업은 주로 아이패드 혹은 포토샵으로 그리고 있어요. 그리고 미국과 한국 등 여러 나라에서 저의 온라인 드로잉 클래스를 진행하고 있어요. 언제 어디서든 스마트폰이나 아이패드, 컴퓨터 등을 통해서 저와 함께 드로잉을 할 수 있죠.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I like to express as if it's a mixture of hand and digital drawing. Feels like it brings the benefits of hand and digital drawing. The vague boundary seems to create a unique atmosphere in my pieces. And I like dreamy colors! When I color my painting with purple or pink, it feels like I’m in a fairy tale. 저는 수작업 느낌과 디지털 느낌이 애매하게 섞인 듯 표현하는 걸 좋아해요. 수작업과 디지털 드로잉의 장점들을 합쳐놓은 느낌으로요. 그 애매한 경계선이 그림의 색다른 분위기를 만들어주는 것 같아요. 그리고 몽환적인 색감을 좋아해요. 보랏빛이나 분홍빛으로 그림을 물들이면 평범해보이는 일상이 마치 동화 속에 있는 것 같은 기분이 들어요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

My favorite medium these days is iPad Procreate. Originally, I used to use a tablet to draw pictures with Photoshop. But from the moment I started using my iPad, it was so convenient! These days, the functions of the Procreate app are as good as Photoshop, so there's no problem in painting a variety of pictures. It's also portable. 요즘 가장 좋아하는 도구는 아이패드 프로크리에이트예요. 원래는 타블렛을 사용하여 포토샵으로 그림을 그리곤 했어요. 근데 아이패드를 이용하게 된 순간부터 너무나 편리하더라고요! 요즘은 프로크리에이트 앱의 기능도 포토샵 못지 않게 잘 만들어져서, 다양한 그림을 그리는 데에 전혀 문제가 없어요. 휴대성 또한 좋고요.

4. What is your artistic process like?

First, I get inspiration for what I'm going to draw. Looking at my favorite photo materials and colors, I think about what to draw. Then, when I feel confident about what to draw, I start to sketch rough and draw with a clean line. And then I color it, and finally, I adjust it to the feeling I want, and I'm done with one picture. 먼저 무엇을 그릴 건지 영감을 떠올려요. 제가 좋아하는 사진 자료들이나 색감을 보면서 떠올리곤 해요. 그러다 문득 어떤 걸 그려야겠다는 확신이 생기면 러프 스케치를 시작해요. 어느 정도 구도가 나오면 깔끔한 선으로 그리고요. 그 후 채색을 하고 마지막으로 제가 원하는 느낌으로 그림을 보정하면 하나의 그림이 완성돼요.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

I often get inspired by a very trivial routine. While walking down the street, drinking coffee, or visiting a certain place, I suddenly think it would be nice to use this experience and express it in my pictures. I'm trying to make sure that people who see my paintings can recall memories like mine 저는 아주 사소한 일상에서 영감을 얻곤 해요. 길을 걷다가, 커피를 마시다가, 혹은 어떤 곳을 방문했다가 문득 이 경험을 살려서 그림에 표현하면 좋겠다고 생각이 들어요. 다른 사람들이 제 그림을 봤을 때, 저처럼 그들의 기억을 떠올릴 수 있으면 좋겠어요.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

I'm an artist, but I'm more rational than emotional. In reality, I was easily afraid of challenging something. There were many times when I couldn't do what I wanted to do because I was so focused on the eyes of others. But gradually, as I draw what I want to draw, the way I think has changed a lot these days. Whatever I do, I have the confidence to challenge myself without being disturbed by others' eyes. Like when I draw, I have the courage to show myself as I am without wrapping myself up. 저는 그림을 그리는 사람이지만, 은근히 감성적인 면보다 이성적인 면이 많아요. 현실적으로 생각하다 보니까 무언가를 도전하는 것에 쉽게 두려움을 갖기도 했고요. 남들의 시선을 신경 쓰느라 하고 싶은 걸 못할 때도 많았어요. 근데 점차 제가 그리고 싶은 그림을 그리면서, 요즘은 생각하는 방식이 많이 달라진 것 같아요. 무엇을 하든 남 시선에 방해 받지 않고 도전하는 자신감이 생겼어요. 그림을 그릴 때처럼, 나를 포장하지 않고 있는 그대로 보여줄 수 있는 용기도 생겼고요.

7. Where did you study?

I graduated from Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea, and majoring in apparel design. Actually, I wasn't very interested in my major when I was in college. When I was young, I didn't know about many design majors, so I chose fashion because I felt most familiar. But while studying that major in college, I knew that I don’t like to design myself. So, after graduating from college, I focused on drawing, which I liked since I was a kid, and now I'm an illustrator. 저는 서울에 있는 건국대학교 의상디자인 학과를 졸업했어요. 사실 대학교를 다니면서 전공에 큰 흥미가 있진 않았어요. 어렸을 때 여러 디자인 전공에 대해 모르는 상태에서, 무작정 패션이 가장 친숙하게 느껴져서 그 전공을 선택했어요. 근데 대학에서 그 전공을 공부하다 보니까 저는 옷을 골라서 입는 걸 좋아하지, 직접 디자인 하는 건 재미가 없더라고요. 그래서 대학을 졸업한 후에는, 원래 제가 어렸을 때부터 좋아했던 ‘그림 그리기’에 집중해서 현재는 일러스트레이터로 지내고 있어요.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

Wouldn't I be drawing somewhere? Of course, I don't know what's going to happen, so I'm not sure if I'm drawing in the future. New possibilities are always open. I don't bother to lock myself in one place. If there is a new challenge, I will do my best for it. 어딘가에서 계속 그림을 그리고 있지 않을까요? 물론 사람 일은 모르는 거니까, 제가 반드시 지금처럼 그림을 그리고 있을 거라고 확신하진 않아요. 저에게 새로운 다른 가능성이 열릴 수도 있는 거니까요. 굳이 저를 한 곳에 가두려고 하지 않아요. 새로운 도전이 생기면 그걸 향해 또 출발하는 거죠.

9. What about in ten?

Ten years is still a long way off, but I think I'll have a family and a child by then. I sometimes imagine painting with my child. How wonderful would it be! 십년은 아직 까마득한데, 그때 쯤엔 저도 가정을 이루고 아이도 있지 않을까 싶어요. 아이가 생긴다면 함께 그림을 그리는 상상을 가끔씩 하곤 해요. 평생 혼자 그려왔던 그림을 내 아이와 함께 그린다는 게 얼마나 멋질까요?

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I don't want anything grand. I'm fully satisfied with every aspect of my life now. But I hope someday more people will remember my paintings. I will work hard until there are more people who can say 'I know this picture!', when they look at my picture. 거창한 건 바라지 않아요. 지금도 충분히 모든 면에서 만족하고 살고 있으니까요. 그래도 언젠가 제가 그린 그림들을 더 많은 사람들이 기억해줬으면 좋겠어요. 그림을 보면, ‘어? 나 이 그림 알아.’ 할 수 있는 사람들이 더 많아질 때까지 열심히 노력해야죠.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like very the flour! I love the taste of its own flour. So I often eat various kinds of noodles. 저는 밀가루를 굉장히 좋아해요! 밀가루 그 고유의 맛이 너무 좋아요. 그래서 면 종류의 음식을 자주 먹어요.

12. Favourite book?

I don't read much, but I sometimes read self-improvement books. 책을 많이 읽진 않지만, 가끔씩 자기계발 서적을 읽곤 해요. 특별히 제일 애착이 있는 책이 있진 않아요.

13. Favourite genre of music?

I really like all genres of music! I listen to all genres of K-pop, pop songs, jazz, and hip-hop. I choose a different genre depending on my mood. 저는 정말 모든 장르의 음악을 좋아해요! 케이팝, 팝송, 재즈, 힙합 모든 장르를 가리지 않고 듣고 있어요. 기분에 따라 다른 장르를 선택하죠.

14. What are your hobbies?

These days, really fun doing Pilates. 요즘은 필라테스 운동을 정말 재밌게 하고 있어요.

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

If I weren't an artist, I would probably be the common office worker. But I don't think it's bad. Both the office worker and the freelance illustrator have pros and cons. But if I have a chance to choose again, I will choose this path without hesitation. 가장 평범한 회사원으로 지내고 있겠죠. 그렇지만 그게 나쁘다고 생각하진 않아요. 회사원과 지금 제가 하고 있는 프리랜서 일러스트레이터 모두 각각의 장단점이 있으니까요. 그래도 다시 선택할 기회가 온다면, 전 고민없이 이 길을 선택할 거예요.
