1. What's your story? Where are you from?

Hi. I'm Yoo Soo-yeon, an illustrator in South Korea. 안녕하세요. 저는 한국에서 일러스트레이터로 활동하고 있는 유수연입니다.

2. Tell us about your aesthetic.

I'm painting stories. A big topic is ‘comfort’. The inspiration of painting is everything I encounter in my everyday life and I mix it with my imagination. In order to express the picture in a fantasy and warm way, I work with care about the composition of colors and pictures. 저는 이야기가 담긴 그림을 그리고 있어요. 큰 주제는 ‘위로‘입니다. 그림의 영감은 일상에서 접하는 모든 것이고 그것을 저의 상상과 섞어 그려내곤 합니다. 그림을 판타지스럽고 따뜻하게 표현하기 위해 색과 그림의 구성에 신경 써서 작업을 해요.

3. What is your favourite medium and why?

Previously, colored pencils were mainly used. These days, I'm using saiTool and Photoshop. Color pencils also have their own feelings, and digital work has many advantages, so it is a good choice depending on the situation. 전에는 색연필을 주로 사용했습니다. 요즘엔 사이툴과 포토샵을 사용하고 있어요. 색연필도 나름의 느낌이 있고 디지털 작업도 여러 장점이 있기 때문에 상황에 따라 선택하는 편입니다.

4. What is your artistic process like?

Take note of the scenes that come up and select them to draw a picture. First, try to match the colors and set the mood of the picture. After that, I continue to edit and draw until I get close to the imagination. 떠오르는 장면들을 메모해 두고 거기서 선택해 그림을 그려요. 먼저 여러 색상을 매치해 보고 그림의 분위기를 잡습니다. 그 후엔 제가 상상한 완성에 가까워질 때 까지 계속 수정하며 그립니다.

5. Who and/or what inspires your work?

The beginning of the painting is the “feeling” I felt. Emotions are heavily influenced by songs, movies, and novels. I recombine these feelings in my own way and express them in one scene. Sometimes a scene comes up at one time, and sometimes several sketches are combined. I want to be inspired in many places. 그림의 시작은 제가 느낀‘감정’입니다. 감정은 노래, 영화, 소설에서 많은 영향을 받습니다. 이렇게 느낀 감정들을 제 방식대로 재조합해서 한 장면으로 표현합니다. 장면이 한 번에 떠오를 때도 있고 여러 스케치를 합쳐 그릴 때도 있습니다. 여러 곳에서 영감을 받으려 합니다.

6. What role does art play in your life? How does it change the way you view the world?

For me, art is knowing who I am. Because I focus on my emotions and draw, I can see how I accept it in various situations. After expressing complex emotions that are difficult to express in words, I feel regretful. That drawing is a great comfort to me. So for me, art is three things: facing, expressing and comforting. 저에게 예술은 내가 어떤 사람인지 알아가는 것입니다. 나의 감정에 집중해 그림을 그리기 때문에 여러 가지 상황에서 내가 어떻게 받아들이는지 알 수 있죠. 말로 표현하기 힘든 복잡한 감정들을 그림으로 표현하고 나면 후련한 기분이 들어요. 그렇게 그려진 그림은 제게 큰 위로가 되죠. 따라서 저에게 예술이란 직면, 표현, 위로 이 세 가지입니다.

7. Where did you study?

I graduated from the Formative painting and now I am studying art therapy. 조형회화학과를 졸업하고 지금은 미술치료를 공부하고 있습니다.

8. Where do you see yourself in five years?

I want to be a more harmonious person than now. Live well-coordinated for work, study, and relaxation I hope you have the passion and steadfastness to continue to challenge your goals. 지금보다 더 조화롭게 사는 사람이 되었으면 해요. 일, 공부, 휴식을 잘 조율하며 살고 목표에 계속 도전하는 열정과 꾸준함을 갖고 있었으면 해요.

9. What about in ten?

10 years later! I wish I had a stable life as an illustration writer and a painting therapist. Make a picture book, exhibit, consult, and live busy, right? 십년후! 일러스트작가와 그림치료사로써 안정적인 삶을 살고 있었으면 좋겠네요. 그림책도 만들고, 전시도 하고, 상담도 하고 바쁘게 살고 있겠죠?

10. What do you hope to achieve with your art?

I want a lot of people to see my paintings and feel some emotions. To do that, I'll paint it with emotion. I plan to participate in an illustration event so that many people can see my drawings. Also, we are currently preparing picture books. I'm thinking a lot about how to make my illustration public. 많은 사람들이 제 그림을 보고 어떤 감정들을 느꼈으면 좋겠어요. 그러기 위해선 저도 감정을 담아 그림을 그릴 것이고요. 많은 분들이 제 그림을 볼 수 있도록 일러스트 행사에도 참여할 계획입니다. 또한 현재 그림책도 준비 중입니다. 외부에 제 그림을 어떻게 알려야 할지 많이 고민하고 있습니다.

11. Now, tell us a little more about you as a person: what is your favourite food?

I like Potato pancakes, and rice noodles. 감자전, 쌀국수를 좋아해요.

12. Favourite book?

I like Chosun Hee's 'Modern Red Bean Rat Exhibition'. It is a book written by imagining the behind-the-scenes stories of the main characters in Korean fairy tales. This is a book that I continue to read because I love the strangeness that comes from familiar stories. 조선희 작가님의 ‘모던팥쥐전’을 좋아합니다. 한국의 전래동화 속 주인공들의 비하인드 스토리를 상상해서 쓴 책인데 우리가 알고 있는 전래동화에 상상과 반전을 이용해 새롭게 재해석했습니다. 익숙한 이야기에서 오는 낯설음이 너무 좋아 계속해서 읽게 되는 책입니다.

13. Favourite genre of music?

작업할때마다 노래를 틀고 해요. 모든 장르의 노래를 좋아하지만 주로 Chillhop을 많이 들어요.

14. What are your hobbies?

Listen to music, watch illustrations 음악듣기, 일러스트 구경

15. If you weren't an artist, what would you be?

Zookeeper! I like animals a lot. It was also a job I really wanted to be. 동물원 사육사요! 제가 동물을 많이 좋아하거든요. 실제로 되고 싶은 직업이기도 했어요.
